The Dean Galway charms guests with its quirky and stylish ambiance, made unique with retro touches like record players in each room. Despite this, some visitors find the rooms small and lacking in storage, which, along with the noise levels from bustling urban life, has led to mixed feelings about overall value and comfort. The central location near Eyre Square garners high praise, offering easy access to local attractions. While opinions on service vary, the cleanliness of the hotel and amenities such as the pool and gym are frequently commended.

The hotel looks great and the staff were nice but there were a number of issues which would mean that we would not bother to stay at this hotel again as follows:

The rooms are very small with nowhere to hang any clothes so they had to be kept in the suitcases pushed under the bed, given the price we paid this was not something we expected

The room had considerable noise from the road which given its a new hotel was very surprising, don't stay in one of the front facing rooms if you want to sleep at night. In fact when we mentioned this at checkout the reception were clearly used to this comment and quickly took off the bill a couple of beers that we had and gave us free parking (which to be fair we did not ask for so this was good service)

Breakfast, compared to other hotels we stayed in prior to this hotel in Ireland, was very poor, for example the "raw" apple juice served on the first morning was actually just cheap juice from a carton which they admitted after I asked about it and they only then told us that they had run out of the normal juice but did not bother to warn us when we ordered it. Likewise the cooked breakfasts on day two were served with broken fried eggs which was very poor of the chef to serve these and only cheap white sliced bread and the choice was poor compared to most other hotels in this price range.

In summary a nice looking hotel but with too many faults to bother going back

Hi W3119RAnickw, Thanks for sharing your recent experience with us. Disappointed to read it didn't live up to expectation overall. Our offering is more boutique than conventional. We pack a punch in what we deliver in the room but it can take away from accustomed details. Unfortunately, at certain times we do get feedback on this, it's not the norm as such but are team are very pro-active in their response and certainly appreciate the feedback on your valued custom. Our breakfast offering is cooked to order and pride ourselves on the delivery of this. On investigation, our raw apple juice hadn't been delivered the morning in question, so apologies on this been served and not acknowledged until afterwards. I will share the feedback with the Restaurant Manager and Head Chef, as although isolated, a valid point none the less. Thanks, Steven

We had a nice 1-night stay at The Dean in Galway! As others have mentioned, the rooms are on the smaller side and the king pretty much takes up the whole room. We had a small desk and nice sized bathroom. We were on the ground floor, which I requested. I would note that parking is a bit more than a "throws stone away" and involves rolling suitcases up a rather large hill. I would recommend dropping off/picking up at the front door and then parking your vehicle. All in all, I love the vibe, and we would return.

The rooms are good, but it's seriously overpriced for what you're getting. An individual stay with breakfast is over €300, and for this you'd expect the 5star treatment or at least run it close. They put a holding charge of approx €50 on the room as well, again excessive on the chance you might take something from the mini bar etc. A bigger frustration is that, they're are very slow to release that money back and it still shows €379 on the account despite checking out over a day ago! Having stayed in many hotels in Galway you're paying more for the look as opposed to the overall hotel experience. A pity really

Hi bmurf2000, Thanks for sharing the feedback on your recent stay. Disappointed to read it didn't hit the expectation that you anticipated. We find ourselves similarly priced with our city centre competitors. We do try our best to deliver a stellar experience overall and apologies on missing the mark on this occasion. We take a card pre-authorisation which would be a standard practice in comparable hotels, it allows you to charge any incidentals across to the room for more convenience throughout your stay. Unfortunately, and depending on date of check-out, we are at the mercy of the banks when it comes to this returning to your account. This should be communicated to you on check-out, apologies if this wasn't passed on. Nevertheless, we will take the feedback on board and please reach out to me directly at steven.flanagan@thedean.ie if you have any further feedback to share on service. Many thanks, Steven

Hotel itself is fine, although we were in a superior room, it was very small. If they removed alot of the record player, radio, ice bucket, drink from the table, you might have room to put your things. No wardrobe to hang clothes, cases at end of bed, so had to watch toes going to loo at night! Their policy of charging a e50 deposit per night, even if you have paid up front and they have a card number, is a joke. Lady on check in and man on check out, advised of refund to card within a few hours of checkout. 3 days later, still no refund, I rang and was advised it was a bank issue and not their problem and that I was advised of 3 to 5 days, which is NOT true. Obviously told what we wanted to hear. They told me it's American policy to charge deposit.... are we not in Ireland?? Customer service lady was quite rude too, and insisted it was not their problem. Obviously, it is when they get all this money for nothing every day and we have to wait maybe 5 days to get our own cash back. Won't be staying in it again. Menu is very limited and same upstairs as down in bar, which was disappointing. Also charged e20 for rasher, egg and toast, whilst a full irish was same price. Bit of an American joke I think!!You are an average IRISH hotel, not an AMERICAN deluxe one

Hey, and thank you for your in-depth review. We're sorry to hear you were not aware of the details on your confirmation email regarding the deposit. It is indeed refunded, if not used towards any food or drink, within hours of departure, but can of course take a couple of business days before the money reaches your account, depending on your bank. As for your comments regarding the lack of space in the room, we are always happy to remove the record player, speaker, etc from the desk if you'd like the full use of the table. This is on a requested basis, as some of our guests of course enjoy the use of the speaker and record player. We hope you'll give us another chance someday - if you do, please contact us direct so we can be sure to look after you!

I stayed at the Dean last week for one night on a short stay in Galway city. Although not as central as some other hotels, this didn't bother me as the city isn't very big and it's only a 10 minute walk to shops and restaurants! The property does not have parking, but rather special rate at the multilevel garage around the corner which was very convenient. I only had a small rolling suitcase and a tote bag, so this didn't bother me, but for people with more luggage I'd advise you try to drop it off before parking. I also found it slightly difficult to get in and out of the garage on foot - one way takes you street side (not the most obvious), and another way takes you out at the bus station side (be aware, at time of writing you cannot get back IN that way). The front desk staff validated my ticket from the garage upon my checkout, so I paid the EUR12 rate as stated on their website.

As for the rooms, I liked that the elevators had their own lobbies so that no rooms were exposed to the dreaded elevator commotion that we all have experienced! I had a mod-pod room which was perfect for just me. Be aware that the room has no closet, just a few rails with hangers (so no iron/ironing board, safe, etc.). Again, this did not bother me really as I was just there for the night and not really spending too much time in the room. It was easy enough to request an iron and a board from reception, however after an hour and it had still not arrived I had to call down again to request - after which it was at my door in 5 minutes! I don't think the bluetooth speaker in my room worked, but that could have been user error. The minibar items were whimsical and extensive! The vinyls and turntable are a cute touch but possibly a waste of space (in terms of turntable) in such a small room. Good water pressure in the bathrooms though I feel there could have better utilized counter space (the flusher buttons were on the top of the counter, rather than in the wall, which I think wasted the space). My bed frame was also horrendously creaky, and each time I moved it sounded like someone was knocking on the door and I struggled with sleep. However, I mentioned this right at checkout when maintenance was conveniently walking by so they went to look at it right away. I also noticed that the room doors slam particularly loudly, which was disruptive a few times in the night. Perfectly comfortable bed and pillows but not a great night's sleep overall.

I had early breakfast at Sophie's which was quite quiet on a Wednesday morning, and checked out! It would also be great if they printed off or emailed an invoice as I've had to request one after the fact (and do not believe they asked me either upon checkout).

The hotel is quite trendy and decor is lovely, but I think a few of those basics (service quality, basics such as furniture maintenance, and guest experience with those horrible slamming room doors) need to be addressed. However, it wouldn't prejudice me from staying at the Dean in the future!

From the outset turned up at the hotel to be told we had no breakfast included even though I contacted reservations the day before to confirm they wanted 40 euro for breakfast
The bedroom was as tiny with only room on one side to walk around the bed
No coffee in the room I had to ask which was brought up an hour later but no coffee machine which I had to wait for again
The bar was soulless and ignored by staff waiting to be served
The other did not open due to lack of staff
Give this a miss

My partner and i stayed for one night in the Dean in Galway as she had heard much hype about it . Firstly it was clean and the staff were hippy chic if i may say., not particularly in tune to the mature person when basic questions about nearby amenities restaurants etc were enquired about suggestions such as super macs or Chinese are not particularly helpful. Nonetheless they endeavoured to try, location is quite good very central, however parking is a difficulty i understand it is available but i was led to believe it is some distance away from the hotel so i parked on the street and paid the price the following morning with parking tickets from the machine . The room that we got was on offer and i feel the best way to describe it was an up cycled hostel bedroom. Small no wardrobe no bed side table but fine for one night (but one night only) prices for snacks / bar etc in the room were well marked but expensive as one would expect. The roof top bar was closed upon our visit however it did look impressive, and probably worth a visit with friends or colleagues.
Overall the Dean is ok . A step or two above a hostel but more hype than substance.

Thanks for the feedback John. I assume you arrived late evening as Sophie's is open 7 days a week serving food to 9:30pm. Those suggestions for amenities/ restaurants would also be late night options, we wouldn't tend to recommend Supermacs unless its one of the only outlets open for takeaway :-)

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with our recent stay at The Dean over the Galway races weekend. Despite the exorbitant room rate for the period, our two nights were severely disrupted by multiple incidents of noise from non-residents arguing with staff in the hallway. These disturbances persisted throughout the night, preventing us from getting any sleep.

When we reported the issue to reception the following morning, we were met with indifference. The staff claimed there were no records of the disturbances on the night report, and the only compensation offered was a 15% discount on the first night's stay.

Given the significant disruption to our stay and the premium price paid, I believe the hotel's response was entirely inadequate. It is my expectation that a hotel of The Dean's calibre would have sufficient security measures in place, particularly during high-demand periods like the Galway races, to prevent such disturbances from occurring.

The idea of the hotel is great but it doest match up to the idea.
Reception is very small, the bar is very small, rooms are also very small, they are lovely along with the showers but just too small to be comfortable.
The mini bar and snacks in the room are really overpriced-small pack of haribo jellies for €5.
Had dinner in the downstairs restaurant, 5 of us, dinner was very nice but there's 2 different menus depending on whether you opted into a deal on offer when initially booked.
Before going out for a few drinks we asked would it be possible to get a drink in the bar or reception later at night and were told yes, came back about 1am and the two male staff at reception had a really poor attitude, first they said we couldn't have a drink and when we told them what we had been told earlier they eventually served us and a few others in reception. They were pretty rude in how they spoke and to customers.
Overall probably the least liked hotel I've stayed in Galway, best thing about it was location and even this wouldn't entice us to return as there's no parking.

My husband and I have been at Dean Galway since Monday 12 August and will be at Dean Dublin on Friday.
The first time I entered the lobby I felt very comfortable, everything seemed super cozy, warm and “cool” at first glance especially the modern artistic details and the great and comfortable furniture, not to mention the wonderfully coordinated colors and pleasant smell!
As a music lover, I would like to emphasize that the music in the background and the funny details turntables and LPs in our room are great.
The gym is the absolute blast, please definitely go in and be surprised :-)
The very pleasant and relaxed ambience is created especially by the Dean employees.
The food was delicious, the breakfast was good, the service this morning of waitresses Laura, Megan, Amelia and Fiona was great. Especially the short open and honest conversation with the Spaniard Fiona was nice!
In short, a hotel experience for all my senses:-)

Now briefly to my suggestions for improvement:
—- in room 211 the windows are NOT open and the view is after a few meters on the opposite hotel rooms!
—— e.g. a Rolo or similar is missing to limit the view to the rooms just a few meters away
—— it lacks wardrobe, only cool poles with 6 hangers to hang, because only people who want to “live out of the suitcase” come to the hotel.
