Detailed Reviews
What a delightful place to stay. A charming, 1800s home that has been turned into a b&b. John and Cathy were so kind and very attentive. The breakfast was excellent. Cathy’s homemade Irish bread was delicious. Within walking distance to the pier, local shops, the bus/train stations. I would definitely stay here again and recommend anyone choosing to stay in this quaint little town just outside Dublin city.

We had a wonderful experience at John and Cathy’s B&B. The breakfasts were outstanding and the room and bed were very comfortable. John gave us, first time travelers to Ireland, lots of good advice and information that made our vacation much more enjoyable. We had a very restful four nights with them and John was always interested in our adventures during the days in Dublin and in town.

Having just returned from holiday in Dun Laoghaire, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Ophira. The location was ideal (walking distance to the DART station and many pubs), the breakfasts sumptious, the bed incredibly comfortable and the service unobtrusive but attentive. Thanks, John and Cathy, for providing such a relaxing home, and I hope to return soon.

The day before our vacation (and about a week before our arrival at Ophira), one of the friends on my trip broke her foot. Despite this, we found getting to and from Dun Laoghaire (think "dun leary") to Dublin easy--John was even kind enough to suggest we take one Dart station to Dublin (downhill) and another on the way home (one stop farther, but a flatter walk home). I vastly preferred staying in Dun Laoghaire to staying in Dublin.
The location of Ophira itself was wonderful. We were within walking distance (even for the chick with the cane and walking cast) to several nice pubs and eating establishments, a lovely park, and bay, the DART and a host of other conveniences, including a laundry, pharmacy, etc.
John and Cathy were very kind and interested in how we were doing and if we needed anything. John in particular was quite gregarious and offered great suggestions for getting around town and taking in some less well-known entertainment.
As a group of three, we were in one of the family rooms. Fairly basic, but spacious, the bathroom is small, but all three of us were able to take showers with no shortage of hot water. Breakfast was yummy every day, and on our day of departure, we had to leave indecently early. They made sure to leave us out some fruit, croissants and yogurt. Kind people invested in guests having a good experience.

We LOVED the Ophira B&B. John and Cathy were just wonderful and so accomodating and resourceful. (We decided that John was our favourite person in all of Ireland!)
The beds were comfortable and we got a great night's rest. (They even provided adaptors in the rooms for forgetful folk like me!) The showers have bathtubs in case you'd like to relax. Plus. how can you not love the chocolate croissants in the morning?
It's a quick hop from Dublin on the DART and we always felt safe in Dun Laoghaire. We went for a walk late at night and it was so delightful. Plus, we caught a cute play in the local theatre. What a beautiful harbour town! So highly recommended!

My wife and I stayed at Ophira in early May, 2007. Cathy and John were absolutely wonderful and were a great help when our luggage did not show when we arrived in Dublin. Cathy took care of calling the Airport and arranging for our late arriving luggage to be delivered to the B&B, freeing us up to visit Powerscourt and Dublin during our two day stay. They were also a great help with directions and planning for our holiday. We would stay at Ophira during our next visit.

Ophira is an old, family home that is now being run as a B&B. The floors creak and the ceilings sag, and all of this adds to the charm of the house. The hosts, John and Cathy, were extremely welcoming and affable. We felt like we were home immediately. The room we stayed in was comfortable although the washroom was a bit small. The breakfast was excellent, with a good variety of food. The B&B is located very centrally in Dun Laoghaire and very easy to explore the town on foot. The train to Central Dublin is a short 5 minute walk from the B&B. I would absolute recommend this B&B for a visit to Dublin and its surrounding area.

We stayed in Dun Laoghaire to avoid the bustle of Dublin and Ophira was the perfect place to stay. A short walk to the DART station, friendly pubs and shops. John and Cathy provide us with a comfortable place to crash after our flight and the next morning filled our stomachs with a generous excellent breakfast, and shared their insights on what to do in Dublin and where to eat and drink in Dun Laoghaire. We totally enjoyed our 3 nights as their guests.

We stayed at Ophira on 2 seperate 2 night stays during our trip to Ireland. Dun Laoghire was central to Dublin (about 30 minutes on the train, same in the car) and Ophira is a 10 minute walk from downtown and the train and bus stations.
We stayed in the family suite. The room had a very nice shower with instant hot water, which was very nice for our family of 4. The beds were old but comforable and the furnishings and the room had a charming atmosphere with plenty of space for storing our clothes.
The breakfast was served by John and Cathy and we really enjoyed the full menu. The eggs and sausage were wonderful and both John and Cathy were very accomodating in making sure we had some breakfast before we headed out to the airport at 6 am the day we departed.
The only problem we had with Ophira is the same problem in all of Ireland's cities...parking! Other than that we thought the B&B was a wonderful, quiet place to stay. The other guests we met were from the US and France and were all eager to talk about their travels in Ireland and other places.
We highly recommend staying here.

My wife and I stayed in a small room at the top of Ophira for 6 nights while we attended a workshop nearby. The room was quiet, though and well kept. Dun Laoghaire was convenient for our business, but turned out to be a lovely seaside town as well. We got down to the harbor every evening for a walk and found lovely views and a peaceful atmosphere. By the way, there is an excellent Italian restaurant down on the waterfront, Toscana, that we would recommend. A nice change from the ubiquitous pub dinners we suffered through the rest of the time.
