We didn’t receive a hello or smile let alone a warm welcome upon our arrival. The staff ignored us at every opportunity they had. We also had our room cancelled with no notification or communication to us. The facilities were less than clean with visible filth in the common shared areas including the bathrooms. Would highly advise against booking this hostel despite its “incredible” reviews.

I stayed at generator in a 4 bed mixed dorm for 2 nights. As a solo female traveler my priority in my hostel was safety, and I felt that Generator does a good job or creating a safe environment as I never felt uncomfortable and they have security at the front doors that check room keys prior to entry. I came in later a night and 3 guys (also staying there) followed me in by catching the door rather than scanning their keys, and security was quick to check everyones key cards and separate the group to give me space which made me feel very comfortable and safe. The bed was comfortable; but, I just did not get great sleep either night. Not Generator’s fault but night 1 a roommate snored so loudly that nobody else could sleep, and night 2 a new roommate came in at 4am and proceeded to watch videos out loud on his phone all night. It was just odd behavior that I hadn’t witnessed in a hostel before as usually people are more respectful. As a solo traveler I was really hoping to make some friends at this hostel to spend time with; but, that seemed pretty tough. The hostel is very large and feels more like a hotel where you share a room, in my experience people didn’t want to socialize much. Generator tries to put on events, I showed up for beer pong a night but it just didn’t have many people at it and those that were were much younger than me (around 18). I booked a separate bar crawl through a different company and met people and had fun. Generator did offer several day tours; but, I didn’t take advantage of them. That being said they looked pretty cool. The location of the hostel is okay, it is still quite a walk to Temple Bar area which makes for a long trip home if you decide to go out at night. But, it is next to Jameson which was convenient as that is a must do stop in Dublin. All in all I would stay at Generator again if it seemed like a reasonable and affordable enough option during my travels. It was safe, not too far from things, and has amenities that other places don’t have. But, I did feel the social life was lacking (I did stay during the week so maybe it is better weekends).

The staff were great. Sadly you can constantly hear the room doors from all over the building slamming at all hours, five days of banging doors and I was just so happy to get out of there. Get some soft close doors so people can get some sleep! My third Generator stay, definitely my worst.

I think it is a great hostel for solo travelers. The atmosphere is really enjoyable and laidback. The staff doesn’t interact too much with you (no showing around, not giving optional info unless asked), but that is a good thing for me as I prefer a quick onboarding. The lobby area is a public bar, it is very good to get to know other people, it sometimes hosts musical events - but the food and drinks are a bit expensive (but not that much compared with Dublin standards). The dorms are ok, I would have liked towels for free but you can’t have everything :) The chests below the bed aren’t provided with a lock, but there are lockets in the common area if you need to store valuables. This is normal in hostels but still I want to say that giving locks (the chests are lockable) would be nice. The area is terrific for exploring Dublin and is near to basically everything I needed as a tourist. Free breakfast would have been cool. The hostel is totally worth the price you pay for, and again, very solo travelers friendly!

Hi there, Thank you very much for the great review, we're glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Events go down well with all guests as there is something on every evening for everyone. inflation has caused prices to increase and we are not immune sadly. thanks again, Generator Dublin

I would not recommend this hostel and would only stay here as a last minute, there are no other options type situation. Luggage storage is not free, they make you pay via coins to put your luggage in a locker, the rooms are small for the amount of people they put into it, and not the cleanest facilities either. I ended up paying over 100 euro a night to stay in a shared room and would have stayed literally anywhere else had there been another option. Was also told in other hostels that having items stolen from this facility is not uncommon, which didn't make me feel particularly safe. The pictures listed on trip advisor are not an accurate representation of the rooms or bathrooms, and I honestly feel a bit cheated with how much money I paid and what I got. I also know room etiquette is not something the hostel can exactly enforce, but I was chewed out by a fellow guest for speaking in the room at 6pm because he was "trying to sleep". He then got out of bed literally naked (in a co-ed room with two other women in the room) and called myself and the others in the room rude and inconsiderate... I haven't stayed in a lot of hostels, but I've never stayed in one quite like this. And not in a good way.

Felt very secure specially with the amount of people -guests- moving around. I left to the airport at 2:30 am and the staff was very helpful getting us a taxi and putting the bags in. I could observed at the time -2:30 am- asking for IDs to everyone coming in.

The location of the Generator is pretty good, close walk to several of Dublins hotspots with local pubs and restaurants all great places to eat and drink. The reception and bar area couldn’t really be grumbled at other than not being the cleanest but the room is where the issues were. General cleanliness was poor throughout, bathroom especially dirty and the tap in the sink was broken, wobbling around whenever you try to use it. If you flush the toilet or run the cold tap it would make a loud screeching noise inside the room. The pillows or should I say lack of pillow, they’re basically just empty pillow cases and offer zero support for your head whilst sleeping. The noise from rooms both sides and corridors late at night was also a major issue. Would visit Dublin again but wouldn’t stay here. Room 311

We thought this would be an okay stay based off the reviews, didn’t expect 5 star quality, but did want a decent stay. The staff wasn’t very friendly or inviting from the moment we walked in. The lockers were out of order and we had a while before we could check in. There was an alternative locker, about a 5 minutes walk offered, but we didn’t use it since we just decided to spend our time waiting in a cafe until check in. Our shower wouldn’t drain properly and that didn’t get fixed during our stay, with traveling so much it would have been nice to take a shower and actually feel clean. The room was very noisy and there was some sound boiling/humming sort of sound coming from above our room that was pretty loud the whole time. We tried to eat at the restaurant one night after a long day but the selection wasn’t much and they were out of a couple things. The overall value for our money just wasn’t worth it.

Hello there, On behalf of the Generator Dublin staff we would like to apologise for any inconveniences caused. We had a few technical problems with our lockers and that's why they were out of service - thankfully this problem is all sorted now and lockers are back and running again. Thank you for leaving us an honest review. We are disappointed to hear your experience wasn’t as you expected. Your feedback helps us improve the facilities we offer all our guests. We can assure you this is not the standard we set for our hostel. We have passed on your comments to the appropriate staff team/s. Generator Dublin

The place is horrible. I'm sorry guys but one of the worst hostels I've stayed in. You charge on average 250 per room of 4 people, it should really he decent. Instead you've got an absolutely disgusting bathroom with mould, uncomfortable beds. QNot happy at all. Storage room out of order. Also mixing men and women, not sure how wise this is, a bit of a shock for a woman to arrive to a room with 3 guys.

It's a nice place, fairly centrally located. The rates are pretty high, but it seems fairly worth it. Word of warning, definitely bring your own pillow if you can, the ones they provide are paper thin.
