The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection, is lauded for its festive atmosphere and elegant charm, with guests admiring the tasteful decorations and grandeur. The cleanliness is a highlight, with meticulous rooms and pristine common areas. Its prime location is perfect for exploring Dublin's offerings. The hotel boasts luxurious amenities and comfortable rooms, though some guests find the rooms could use an update. While the service is generally praised, there are occasional inconsistencies, and some guests feel the hotel's high cost doesn't always equate to value.

“My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin over the weekend, and every moment was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality that exceeded all expectations. Special thanks to Nicholas, the bellhop, who was so attentive and helped us settle in smoothly. Rachel at the front desk made our check-in seamless and ensured we had everything we needed to start our stay on a perfect note. Throughout our stay, the service was impeccable. Karl and Greg, the doormen, greeted us with such genuine warmth and hospitality every time we returned to the hotel, making us feel like VIPs. Orla, Shauna, and Eva at the concierge desk were incredibly knowledgeable and helped us craft the ideal itinerary to explore Dublin, with thoughtful recommendations for everything from hidden gems to classic must-sees.
Our experience in The Saddle Room restaurant was simply amazing. Ana, Mariel, Jennifer, and Daniel provided the best dining experience we could have asked for—attentive without being intrusive and wonderfully accommodating. Every meal was a highlight of our stay, and their attention to detail made it extra special. Eugene and other housekeeping staff went above and beyond to ensure our room was spotless and cozy, with thoughtful touches that made us feel right at home.
The Shelbourne team exemplifies outstanding service and genuine care, creating a luxurious and memorable experience that we’ll never forget. We can’t wait to return to Dublin and stay here again! Thank you to everyone who made our weekend so wonderful!!!!.”

Amazing hotel in perfect location across from St Stephen’s Green and with top notch service and accommodations from the moment of our arrival! Absolutely love how kind and competent everyone on staff is! Several doormen are available to help with luggage, or hail a car for guests. The concierge has wonderful suggestions for local attractions. And every inch of the hotel is perfect—Lobby, dining room, bar, tea room, bedrooms and suites. The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable, the bathroom water pressure is wonderful, the soaps and hand soaps are lovely, and the complimentary coffee, tea and water service in-room is lovely, too. Room service is prompt and the food is prepared perfectly. Dining room breakfast is substantial and enjoyable with fresh-pressed juices available in addition to the full buffet and regulars tea, coffee and juice options. I felt totally pampered in every way! I can’t wait to return again!!

The Shelbourne is undoubtedly a stunning hotel, offering a grand and welcoming atmosphere upon arrival. We visited iduring some holiday festivitues , and the hotel was quite busy.

I had reserved two rooms for three nights. At check-in, my Bonvoy status was not acknowledged and rooms not upgraded (guessing due to high occupancy) My room was situated next to the elevator and it could be quite noisy. While the rooms are somewhat dated, they are tastefully appointed. Although the carpet showed some wear and the climate control system was outdated, excellent housekeeping, comfortable beds and linens, and luxurious pillows made up for these minor drawbacks. The bathroom also had instant hot water.

During our stay, the hotel experienced a widespread issue with key cards. My room key failed to work on both the first and second days, and this problem also affected the elevators. I had to visit the front desk several times for reprogramming. This was an annoyance.

Despite upgrading to higher-speed internet, the download speed was disappointingly slow, at just 10mbps.

Saturday morning breakfast was chaotic. We arrived at 9:30 and were asked to wait in a charming room next to the large Christmas tree until our room number was called. After waiting over an hour, it seemed there was no clear system for managing the waiting list.

A few highlights: Michael, the bartender at the upstairs bar, was fantastic, and the cozy ambiance there was a great touch. Eva from Concierge was exceptional, arranging a wonderful reservation for us at a fantastic off-site restaurant. The subsequent breakfasts were much smoother, with excellent service and a great variety of food. The holiday decorations throughout the hotel were beautiful. The location cannot be beat - right across St. Stephen's Green and walking distance to many sites, restaurants and shopping.

Like any large hotel, the Shelbourne faces its share of challenges. However, the outstanding service and the wonderful staff made our stay at this grand, historic hotel a memorable and worthwhile experience.

Dear YLtraveler, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback about your stay at The Shelbourne. We're delighted to hear that you had a great time overall and appreciated the hotel's stunning atmosphere, excellent housekeeping, and the cozy ambiance of the upstairs bar. We apologise for the inconveniences you experienced, such as the lack of Bonvoy status acknowledgment, the noise from the elevator, and the outdated climate control system. We understand how these issues can impact your stay, and we will address them to improve our guests' experience. The key card issues and the slow internet speed you encountered are certainly frustrating, and we are working on resolving these technical problems to ensure a smoother stay for our guests in the future. We regret the chaotic breakfast experience on Saturday morning and the long wait times. We will review our system to manage the waiting list more efficiently and ensure a better dining experience. We're pleased to hear that Michael at the upstairs bar (1824) and Eve from Concierge provided exceptional service, and that you enjoyed the holiday decorations and the hotel's prime location. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to enhance our services. We hope to welcome you back soon and provide you with an even better experience. Warm regards, Andrew J. This was without a doubt the best hotel experience. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The room was immaculate and quiet. The food and drinks were excellent. The location was perfect for exploring Dublin being within walking distance to museums, live music, and dining. I would live in this hotel if it was an option. One tip for those not in the known to turn on the lights for the room you have to insert a keycard by the door, it’s a sensible idea since it insures that lights are turned off when you leave, but we didn’t know about this and spent a good 10 minutes feeling like there was something we weren’t getting before we figured it out.

We stayed here for a long weekend in March, three nights in total. I booked via the app and always reserve the room I want, so we had a suite to enjoy. Ahead of check in I asked my Bonvoy ambassador to coordinate a Y24 but she said it wasn’t available, a few days before check in and again the morning we landed from the US I messaged via the app to let the front desk know our arrival time.

One tip I’ll share is not to waste time using the app for this hotel. There’s an automated response to each message as nobody bothers to read or reply to them. The service at the front desk isn’t much better, young and inexperienced foreign students who mutter incomprehensibly and have to run to a back office for ten minutes each time before making any decision or providing a room.

The check in time is supposed to be 3pm, our room wasn’t ready at 3pm and we were told to come back at 4. At 4pm our room still wasn’t ready and we were told it could be another few hours. At this point I asked to speak to a manger and within minutes we had the key to our suite. My guess is that it was available when we arrived at noon but given the complete lack of engagement, experience and care from the staff nobody was going to figure this out.

The service at the restaurant is similar with a bunch of untrained staff standing around while guests wait for service. The food is ok but it’s the same thing every day and could use some variety. It was only on the Sunday as we were leaving that the host Shane made an effort to show us around the buffet and offerings and ensure that a waiter had been assigned to our table. The bars are noisy but fun with a mixed service level overall.

Our suite was big and comfortable, the windows were clean and the view of the park was wonderful but the room itself was pretty dark. There’s only one bathroom with no WC as is the standard in most suites. We appreciated twice daily housekeeping and the AC worked very well.

While this is a Marriott hotel, there is no status recognition from the staff whatsoever. Although to be honest there is so little engagement and hospitality from the staff altogether there’s no way this can be considered a five star experience. Literally every opportunity they have to connect with guests is missed as if they’re trying to avoid us. I followed up by sharing my experience with the Front desk manager a week ago and she didn’t even acknowledge my email or reply!

We have stated at the nearby Merrion hotel many times and always recommend it to friends who are visiting my home town. Next time we’ll be staying there too, the rooms are big and bright and the Cellar bar and restaurant are excellent.

Dear Familyof6, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We sincerely apologise for the numerous issues you encountered during your stay. It is disheartening to hear about the challenges with the app, the front desk service, and the delays in room readiness. This is certainly not the level of service we aim to provide. We appreciate your loyalty and your status as an Ambassador through Marriott Bonvoy. Your recognition should have been our top priority upon your arrival. We regret that your experience with our restaurant staff and the lack of variety in the food did not meet your expectations. We are also sorry to hear about the lack of engagement and hospitality from our team, as well as the absence of status recognition. We are deeply disappointed that you were unable to experience our usual levels of services and standards. Your comments regarding the suite's comfort and cleanliness are appreciated, and we are glad you enjoyed the view of the park. However, we understand that the room's darkness and the bathroom setup were not ideal for you. We are taking immediate steps to address the issues you raised, including improving our communication processes, enhancing staff training, and ensuring better service at our restaurant and front desk. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve our services. We hope you will consider giving us another chance to provide you with a much better experience in the future. Sincerely, Andrew J. We love The Shelbourne and have stayed here twice, for one week both times. The rooms are delightful, albeit a little quaint. The service from all the staff is wonderful. Breakfasts are an event. The attention to detail is amazing -- one morning I saw someone from house cleaning carefully polishing the brass railing. We stayed here in 2019 and again in 2024 -- it was just like we remembered it.'

It is convenient for walking around in central Dublin to see the sights and there are plenty of restaurant options nearby.

During our recent three-day stay at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, we were thoroughly impressed with the experience. Our suite was exceptionally spacious, featuring a large bed alongside an adjacent double bed, providing ample comfort for our family. The hotel's central location made exploring the city convenient, and the staff's attentive service enhanced our visit. The only minor issue was the slightly squeaky floors, but this did not detract from our overall enjoyment. We highly recommend The Shelbourne's suites for families seeking both luxury and comfort in the heart of Dublin.

I have been a loyal guest of The Shelbourne for over 30 years, celebrating milestone events and staying regularly for both personal and professional visits. Unfortunately, my recent Christmas stay with my wife and 7-year-old daughter was a major disappointment—not only due to the decline in quality but, more frustratingly, due to the complete lack of care in addressing my concerns afterward.

The Stay Itself – A Shadow of Its Former Self
Our experience started with difficulty in confirming our reservation for the Festive Dinner. Reception staff couldn’t provide a simple confirmation, instead telling me it "should be okay" and that someone would call me back—on Christmas Eve, no less. A five-star hotel failing to confirm a dinner reservation over the phone was baffling.

The Festive Dinner itself was a letdown. At €100 per person, we expected something special. Instead:

My wife’s salmon starter was dry, clearly plated long before serving.
My turkey and ham main was poor—the meats were subpar, the Brussels sprouts were chopped and cold, and the meal was uninspired.
My daughter’s chips seemed to come from a frozen packet, and her request for garden peas instead of mushy peas was ignored.
My wife was told she had to pay extra for mashed potatoes, which should be a basic inclusion.
There were no festive touches whatsoever—no Christmas crackers, no small gift for our daughter, nothing to make the experience feel special.
Breakfast, once a highlight, has also deteriorated—it felt ordinary and uninspired.

Service inconsistencies continued throughout our stay. Repeated requests for fresh milk were ignored until a more attentive staff member finally brought what we asked for.

Drinks at the Horseshoe Bar were another disappointment. My Guinness was not cold, and when the barman asked how it was, he walked away before I could answer. My wife’s latte was lukewarm and tasted like it came from a cheap coffee machine.

On a positive note, most staff were courteous, especially the doormen.

The Biggest Issue – Shocking Customer Service Post-Stay
After my visit, I was contacted by The Shelbourne’s "Quality and Standards Manager" in response to my concerns. I provided detailed feedback, and he assured me that someone would follow up.

That follow-up never came.

I sent four emails over several weeks, asking when I could expect a response. Eventually, I was contacted—not to acknowledge the lack of communication, not to apologize, and not to address my complaints, but simply to clarify a billing matter. The response I received was what I’d expect from a budget two-star hotel, not a five-star establishment that prides itself on service.

If The Shelbourne no longer values guest feedback or customer service, it should at least be honest about it. After decades of being a loyal guest, I now have serious doubts about ever returning.

For the prices they charge, there are far better hotels in Dublin that actually care about their guests.

The Shelbourne Dublin is undeniably a beautiful and historic building, impeccably maintained, and rich with charm. The service is excellent—staff are attentive and professional, although there’s a slightly smug attitude that feels a bit out of place for a five-star hotel.

Unfortunately, the room itself was a disappointment. Despite the grandeur of the hotel, the linens were tattered, and the towel rack was not only dusty but also failed to warm. Details like the toilet paper roll being mounted at a 45-degree angle only added to the sense that the room’s upkeep wasn’t quite on par with the high price point. For €800 a night, these basic amenities shouldn’t need to be mentioned; they should be flawless by default.

Good afternoon Sallu25, Thank you for your enquiry. There will be no additional charge for your children staying in the room. However, if a room category change is needed, or if an extra bed or rollaway bed is required to accommodate your 8-year-old, additional charges may apply. If you need further clarification, please feel free to contact our reservations team. Best regards, The Shelbourne Team
