Great friendly staff. Negatives, room 337 no chairs to sit on, no luggage space. Air conditioning outside window not ideal. There was a concert last Sunday afternoon. Not informed of this because we would like to have attended. I noticed the thorough cleaning in the reception area BUT within the lifts strips of tacky sellotape remain
We had the pleasure of staying at the Abbey Hotel last night…Patricia and all the staff were fantastic…We had arranged an early check in and they were so fabulous in helping us when we arrived…Our room was lovely and very clean and breakfast was delicious and plentiful…We always enjoy our visits to Ireland and especially The Abbey Hotel as we had our wedding reception there 17 years ago…Thank you so much to the Management and to Patricia and all the staff … your kindness was very much appreciated… Amanda M Brixius.
Check in was confusing, and the lobby was packed. Once we got to our 3rd floor room, the Wi-Fi wouldn’t connect so we went back to the front desk where we were connected to staff Wi-Fi. Even that was hit or miss from our room. The tv had very few channels, which combined with the Wi-Fi issue was pretty annoying. It rained hard the whole first day so we spent a lot of time in the room with our child. We really did appreciate how close we were to some site seeing things, like a castle that was free for the day and a graveyard/ruins. Food and shopping in the area were nice, but we’re almost all closed very early which was surprising.
We stayed at the Abbey Hotel from 23rd to 28th May 2022. On arrival we were allocated room 224. When we entered the room it had not been cleaned from the previous occupants. Back down to reception and staff quickly found another room and while we went for dinner transferred our belongings to this room. The bed was comfortable but found the wardrobe was lacking in hangers. Only four hangers for the two of us. The shower in the bathroom was antiquated and fell apart when trying to get it operational. On our last morning (0600 hours) the water was cold. Didn’t enjoy the meals in the evening. The main course in particular had excessive portions, mostly potato. The desserts were pretty average. The staff were polite and helpful. The location was perfect.
This hotel is a gem. We had a wonderful stay. Room was so clean and breakfast was fine. Everyone is just so friendly. Lovely experience and right in the centre of town! Dinner also good. Craic in the bar was great!
Had a very nice stay here. Staff were lovely throughout. Breakfast was enjoyable each morning. And the location in the heart of Donegal can't be beat. Parking is convenient in the waterside municipal lot just down the street. The river/bay view was also a bonus.
We popped in for a bite to eat in the abbey hotel although there is plenty of nice eatery’s in the diamond we choose the abbey as we’ve been a few times in the past , but I must say it was in the restaurant to the right of the entrance which is closed now (Sunday) we thought it was strange as Sunday was a busy day , we walked into the bar area and waited to be seated and waited and waited then we were seated in the very first table beside the till I asked to be moved which did happen to a wobbly table under the tv beside the toilets , I ordered fish of the day , now anybody who knows Donegal town knows it is close to killybegs , and would agree with me in thinking the fish would be fresh out of the sea literally and into the pan , well I was disappointed, I couldn’t understand what kind of fish it was , but realised it had been frozen then cooked in the fryer and served up with chips , we asked twice what was the fish but they didn’t know until when I was paying I asked the man talking the bill , he said it was cod anyhow I didn’t want to complain at this stage as we where leaving at this point and nothing could have been done , I found the staff friendly but not experienced at all and I found the restaurant ,,tired , I didn’t try a desert , now I must be honest and say my partners turkey was just ok but just ok , this place used to be the best , but I fear the management or owners sort of know it’s the only big hotel and they’ll get the business anyhow , take it or leave it attitude, I honestly can say I’ll never waste my money in here again and will go to the lovely restaurant opposite in future. I was in the day Donegal played Derry .…
Our stay at the Abbey started off poorly when the women at reception demanded to know if we were going to eat breakfast at the hotel and what time. Maybe she was having a bad day, but we were immediately turned off. It was 4 pm. Why couldn't they have requested we let them know that night? Odd. Rooms are old and dated. Ours was in the back and had a beautiful view of the river and the Abbey. Location is excellent in the middle of town. Strangely the hotel advertises free parking, but they don't have parking. We parked by the water taxis in Lot 4..30 Euros per hour with overnight stays allowed.
My colleague and I stayed here in May for a work trip. The very first lady who greeted us at reception was just lovely, it seems odd to say but, it's so rare to get a warm reception nowadays. She asked us about our trip and made us feel very welcome. We asked if we could check out at check-in, as we had an early start. She said of course, no problem and arranged an early breakfast, just for us. I have stayed in many hotels where I'm up an out early and miss breakfast. But nobody had ever arranged an early breakfast. When we came down in the morning, the night porter knew who we were, obviously the lady on reception had explained the arrangement. He very kindly offered us a space to leave our bags while we had breakfast. The lady working in the breakfast room was also expecting us. Even though I'm sure we were an inconvenience, she made sure we had absolutely everything we needed. She was terribly accommodating. The communication between staff was flawless. I know it sounds basic but, you rarely see this type of service. I would stay here again.…
Stayed here as a family of 4 from Saturday to Monday. The check in was quick enough. The room was very dated. The sink kept filling up with water and needed replaced. On the Saturday night the Gardaí were at the room facing us with some young men who appeared to be on drugs. This was upsetting for our young children. The fire alarm then went off briefly at 5.20 in the morning and we were unable to go asleep after this. The staff are friendly and the breakfast was very good. The hotel is in an ideal position and with a bit of updating to the rooms would be an excellent hotel.
