The Metropole Hotel captivates guests with its historical allure and a lively roster of cultural events, though some find the decor and noise levels less appealing. Nestled in a prime location, the hotel is a hit for its easy access to local attractions. While service at the hotel garners high marks for being attentive and professional, opinions on room comfort are split due to noise, size, and datedness. Cleanliness is generally upheld, and while amenities like quality dining and live music are a draw, guests have mixed feelings about the overall value.

Myself and my husband have stayed at the Metropole Hotel numerous times over the years and have always found it excellent. It’s a terrific location for shopping, restaurants, sightseeing etc.. We recently stayed for one night and we definitely feel that standards have dropped. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable however, little touches were missing, such as no coffee machine, no biscuits, no bottled water, no shower cap. The room could do with repainting. Staff are friendly and helpful. The television in room has very few channels and the reception was poor. The bar area lacks any atmosphere. We didn’t eat at the hotel so we can’t comment on that. Hotel prices are now so high that people are less tolerant of a slip in standards.

Excellent 5 night stay at this boutique hotel. My room was recently renovated and was spotlessly clean. Hotel provided thick towels, robe and slippers and my room was very quiet. An Irish breakfast was provided with my rate and the choices were delicious! My fellow traveler had a gluten allergy and the hotel was very careful to identify foods containing gluten and to ensure no cross contamination. The front desk was extremely friendly and helpful. Lastly, the location was perfect.. a quick walk to the bus and train station (to Dublin), the city bus service stop steps away and a walk into Cork City in under 5 minutes. We ate at a few of the many great restaurants on MacCurtain Street and enjoyed some trad music at Sin E ( a quick walk from the hotel). We will happily return to this hotel.

This is a old traditional large hotel that has been refurbished. It is in a very good location, though on arrival we were unable to find somewhere to stop and unload the car. The ground floor was generally very elegant and well decorated and the breakfast room was excellent as was the breakfast. The bedroom was not of the same standard. it was plain and not very large. The beds were comfortable, but when the room was too hot, there was no way of controlling this and we were unable to open the window. Eventually we managed to open the window in the bathroom and left the bathroom door open. The service was always very good and very friendly. There was good Jazz on Monday, but we were surprised that it was in a small dining room and only a few diners could actually listed to it. I had booked a room on the last Monday of the festival, and I then asked for it to be extended to the next day and was surprised that be charged a higher rate for the following night!

If they are 4 stars, they are barely hanging on to them.

The good: food, bar, beds are decent, place is clean.

The bad: no air conditioning is bad enough....the radiator in the bathroom is heating the room. Front desk says the heat comes on automatically 3 times a day...it was 28 degrees outside today!!! Why is the heat in at all? Small fan doesn't cut it.

If you leave the windows open, noise from the random Jock&Connors wandering the streets just adds to the ambience. Sleeping in hot, noisy rooms.
We are here Sept 18 and 19...can't imagine anyone staying here in the Summer.

Toilet: takes 2 to 4 flushes to get rid of toilet contents. Tank takes quite awhile to fill so have a seat while waiting

Showered at 715am this morning and no hit water. I let the hot run for several minutes while cold tap was off ...how are they out of hot water by 7am, no air conditioning and claim to be 4 star hotel?

I imagine the only good time to stay would be in winter on less popular weeks so you don't have to tolerate have a cold shower in February.

Our room is so hot as I type this I am going to have another cold shower before bed.

Stay elsewhere.

Dear donald v, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We're sorry to hear that certain aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, especially with regard to the room temperature and water issues. Regarding the hot water situation, there was unfortunately a technical issue during your stay that affected the supply. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this and are actively working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We appreciate your positive remarks about the food, bar, cleanliness, and comfort of the beds, and we take your other concerns seriously as we continuously strive to improve. Despite our room being booked and paid for by myself, email correspondence is directed in my wife’s name.
We stayed in a ‘suite’ costing over €400 for 2 nights.
This ‘suite’ which other hotels would describe as a room was vastly overpriced.
A bedside lamp was not working.
A desk chair was about to fall apart and would have been dangerous to sit on.
The room was cold when we arrived.
There were no instructions as to turn on the heat in the room or bathroom.
We had to figure this out for ourselves.
The dining room for breakfast is cold.
Coffee was cold.
Standard of breads on offer is disgraceful.
We were woken on our second morning at 4.15am by continuous noise on the street outside.
Despite having the windows closed it was impossible to sleep.
The noise from the building work is annoying.
We have stayed at the Metropole before with no problems.
Never again.

Our team is always available to assist, and we encourage guests to dial '0' for any assistance needed during their stay, whether it’s adjusting room temperature or addressing maintenance concerns. We regret that these issues impacted your experience. We also apologize for any inconvenience caused by our ongoing refurbishment. We truly appreciate your past stays with us and regret that this visit was disappointing. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will review it carefully to improve our guest experience. We stayed in a Double Suite which is the most expensive room type on the hotel's website and presumably therefore their most luxurious...but everything was just a bit average. When spending almost €200 per night for an older "prestige" hotel you're hoping for a bit of grandeur and something a little special. Instead, I found myself wishing I'd saved €50 or more and booked one of the newer hotels recently built in Cork because what they might lack in personality, they'd make up for with facilities and value for money.

The room itself was just fine, no exciting bells or whistles, the furnishings and décor were a little worn and the room could have been cleaner. When we turned on one of the bedside lamps it blew a breaker somewhere in the building though the staff were very prompt and helpful in sorting it out. TV had the most basic Free To Air options and nothing else. The shower had poor water pressure, a fairly useless showerhead, and tiles in need of a deep clean.

The breakfast was lovely so that was a highlight. Everything else though...meh. Most of the issues were small things you'd overlook in an older B&B or guesthouse but in a Cork City hotel charging high rates...it all just smacked of a lack of care. They are doing renovations - expected to be completed May 2025 - but seemingly only to some of the common areas rather than their rooms.

I might have gone for a 3 Star rating based on a lower room rate but for nearly €200, you're really expecting a treat, or at least something better than this, so I went with 2 Stars.

P.S. We were informed that while the renovations are ongoing, they are unable to offer any baggage storage for guests.

Dear BFar14, Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your stay did not meet expectations and appreciate your insights. We understand the high expectations for a suite and regret that your experience fell short; we’ll review your feedback with our team. While our refurbishment is being carried out in phases, starting with the ground floor, we recognize that some areas need updates and are actively working on improvements. We also appreciate your feedback on baggage storage. Initially, we were unable to offer this service due to space constraints during renovations, but after receiving guest feedback, we have since found a solution to accommodate luggage storage, as we understand how important this is to our guests. We truly value your input and regret that your stay was not as enjoyable as it should have been. Should you choose to visit us again in the future, we hope to provide a much-improved experience. What a wonderful experience and a walk back in time to gentile days but modern service. From day one I knew that we had found something special.
On day one we were welcomed as if we were old friends, nothing was a problem. We were given a room that had a bath that was unsuitable so I had to go down and ask for another room. No trouble they said and they found a second room. The second room was much smaller than the original room but they had done as we asked and found a room with a stand alone shower, no bathtub. We stayed the night but the room was really a single room and we had no room for our luggage - we kept tripping over it. I then went down and asked if they had one a little larger but was still okay for my partner as he had mobility problems. They once again looked at their rooms and said that one was going to be available later that day and as we were going out they would even move our luggage for us. I was embarrassed by asking a second time but they said it was perfectly okay and showed no difference in their attitude towards us. They are either well trained or simply very nice.
The breakfast room was bright and cheery and looked out onto the river so we had views with our scrumptious breakfast. We ate in the restaurant every night even bringing our guests to eat there. They were well priced with a good range of meals and we were very happy eating there. We were served most nights by a young waitress called Caoimhe who I must say was simply the best, they also had a great bar with friendly bar staff, especially the guy from Chile whose name I forgot to get while I was there. The rooms were serviced everyday, something that didn't happen with a lot of other hotels. The hotel is a throw back to about 100 years ago, I felt like we were on the set of an Agatha Christie film, it was wonderful.
I would recommend the hotel to everybody because it felt like a home away from home and when I go back to Ireland I will be staying there again.

We booked into the hotel on NYE for their NY celebration event. We arrived at the hotel early and were surprised to find that our room was ready. The room was a little on the small side….i think the term is cozy but really more like a single size than a double.
Our package included a cocktail on arrival which was very welcome and we were able to choose whatever we’d like. The dinner in the evening was held in one of their ballrooms and we were met with a champagne reception prior to dinner. Again, we weren’t limited to one glass and it was a lovely opportunity to mingle with other guests. Dinner was excellent, everything was hot and fresh and served in a timely manner given they were catering for around 200 people. The NY event was great fun with music provided by a great live band and later on, a DJ. There were plenty of staff on hand to ensure everyone was catered to.
We had a great sleep in a very comfy bed and breakfast the next morning was as good as the food at dinner. We had access to a buffet style continental as well as ordering cooked to order off a menu. Overall, no complaints and the package was good value for money. Definitely will be looking to do this again as hotel and staff made it a very enjoyable evening.

The Metrople Hotel is conveniently located near the bus stop (just across the bridge) and a short 5 minute walk. When we turned down MacCurtain Street, we realized that the whole street was under repair/renovation, but luckily there was no loud noises during our stay and it was still manageable to get in and out of the hotel (and the area in general). The construction may have also made the driving in that area more congested and stressful for driving but it wasn't too bad. The hotel manager said that the road work has been going on for over a year as the city is updating all of the sidewalks and streets. We could tell a noticeable difference between the unfinished side and the completed side, with the newer truly being quite nice.

The hotel itself was large and fancy inside. I particularly loved the artwork and decor in the hotel hallways, featuring historical pictures of Cork and the River Liffey in black/whites. The decor was a little older and luxurious feeling so we were actually surprised at how fancy it felt. The hotel manager that checked us in was extremely friendly. We took 1 of 2 elevators/lifts up to the 3rd floor and were shocked when we realized our room would be river facing! The view from our room was pretty cool, being able to see the other side of this little city, the River Liffey, and many bridges. Being on the south side of the building, we also got a nice breeze and amazing sunset view on our second night.

The hotel's amenities were very nice too. We were welcomed with a dessert tray in our room with some petite cheesecake bites, brownies and macarons. Yum! The room felt very clean, the bathroom was beautiful, clean and spacious. The beds were the most comfortable than our previous 2 hotels, and it also had plug-ins for a USB, and iron, hair dryer, and plenty of closet space. Once the construction ends, I imagine this place will go up in price and be even more attractive of a option for lodging.

The Metropole Hotel is one of Cork's iconic treasures and I was excited to finally experience it with friends for an overnight stay.

The arrival was so efficient, the receptionist was friendly and professional. The accommodation was superb! The high ceilings, original features, cleanliness, extremely comfortable beds (best nights sleep in a long time) and the little touches that are having a positive impact on our environment really made our stay a memorable one.

Breakfast the following morning is set in the most beautifully decorated room, beautiful tones that are so relaxing with a view overlooking the River Lee. The breakfast buffet offers everything that you would like and the hot options are fantastic - I'm a coeliac and I rarely receive a dedicated menu with so many options for me to enjoy. There also appeared to be menus for other dietary requirements - it really set the tone for a lovely experience before we had even been sat at our table.

The location is fantastic in the Victorian Quarter. We dined in Gallagher's, the food and service there was excellent and I would highly recommend. Of course, we had to take a trip to the infamous Cask for delicious cocktails and great atmosphere.

For shopping the next day, the hotels' location is fantastic. Only a short walk from Patrick's Street.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the Metropole Hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful, central hotel in Cork City. This gorgeous treasure is one that everyone should experience at least once - I for one cannot wait to return.

So sorry with the delay in answering! My room was a last minute booking and there wasn’t a mini fridge in it. But as the home of the Cork Jazz, I’d bet that they would help you out. Perhaps you’ve stayed already, in which case Cheers! I hope you had a swinging good time.
