The Maryborough Hotel & Spa earns praise for its serene location and scenic surroundings, though it's a little secluded from Cork city. Guests have lauded the professional staff and relaxing spa, but some have encountered inconsistent service. While the hotel's cleanliness and atmosphere receive compliments for their spotlessness and coziness, a few guests have pointed out upkeep issues. The comfortable and well-equipped rooms are popular, although there have been occasional cleanliness and maintenance complaints. Despite the enjoyable amenities, some travelers feel the hotel does not provide good value due to high prices and unexpected charges.

Our stay at the Maryborough Hotel & Spa in Cork County, Ireland, was mostly positive despite a few hiccups. The room we stayed in was spacious and tastefully appointed, featuring a comfortable couch, coffee table, desk, and large window that opened onto a serene view of the back lawn and surrounding trees. It felt incredibly private and peaceful, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

There was a very good selection of coffee and teas in the room, which was appreciated. The assortment of toiletries provided also exceeded our expectations, ensuring we had everything we needed during our short stay.

While we didn't have the chance to experience the spa or dine at the restaurant due to our travel schedule, our room provided a quiet retreat for much-needed rest. The bed was very comfortable, and we enjoyed two good nights of sleep.

However, our experience was impacted by the inconvenience of the elevator being out of service upon our arrival. Climbing several flights of stairs with luggage, especially with one member of our party having a bad knee, was challenging and disappointing, especially since the issue persisted throughout our stay. There was no effort by the hotel to make up for this inconvenience by offering something small, like a drink voucher. Nothing but apologies, which were appreciated, but we really just wanted to see some action towards repairing the elevator. When we left two days later, there still was no one working on it.

Another disappointment was the buffet breakfast. While the full Irish breakfast was satisfying, the buffet offerings were surprisingly sparse compared to other establishments we visited during our two-week trip in Ireland. Disappointing considering the reputation of the hotel.

Overall, the Maryborough Hotel & Spa offers a serene and comfortable stay with lovely rooms and thoughtful amenities. It's definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

We had a wonderful one night stay in the hotel. Food, staff and spa treatment were all excellent. Facilities in the room such as tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries were all very high quality. The extra touches added to acknowledge we were there for a birthday celebration were thoughtful and greatly appreciated.

The hotel was home away from home for several nights of a work trip. The rooms were beautiful, comfortable and clean! They delivered fresh towels and bottled water every day and even brought some other special gifts to the room such as wine and bath salts! Very professional and helpful front desk staff helped me out when I was having problems with my cell phone. They let me use the desk phone and one woman at the desk let me us her personal cell phone! Delicious breakfast and dinners, lovely bar staff, too.

We highly recommend Maryborough Hotel and Spa, a superb guest experience every time.
I really enjoy the thermal spa and the extensive ESPA treatments.
There is afternoon tea in the front drawing room or fine dining in Bellini’s, always fresh local ingredients and exquisitely presented and a sensation for all palletes.
The Maryborough has hosted guests since 1997, conveying a feeling of grandeur from a bygone age. A restored 1715 three-story over-basement mansion on wooded hills above the Douglas River estuary serves as the focus of this superb four-star hotel, spa, and conference centre in Cork. Maryborough House was purchased in 1995 with 24 acres, although the 400-acre demesne of The Maryborough historically had a farm, orchards, woodlands, and gardens, most of which survives despite suburban development. Renowned for its exquisite hospitality, award-winning ESPA Spa facilities, and bespoke weddings. We got married here in 2018.

According to proprietor Dan O’Sullivan, "There were three main families involved; “The Newenhams built the house and lived there for a long time. They and a private bank located first on Patrick St, then on South Mall. Another branch of the family possessed 'Coolmore,' which is still standing outside Crosshaven and was regarded as this house's twin. The Perrier’s, who were originally Huguenots and supplied several Mayors to Cork,
leased Maryborough from the Newenhams for 14 years. Finally, the Sherrard family stayed for the next 120 years. They made the gardens famous for their produce and were suppliers of agricultural machinery. By 1995, the old house was in disrepair. We purchased it, and the restoration was primarily done by Cork builders P.J. Hegarty's. Rather than attempting to recreate a Georgian mansion from scratch, we upgraded remaining parts and blended modern features with grace.
There were little sentry posts in parts of one wall, which the Newenhams’ erected to charge tolls on the road that they had built in the direction of Carrigaline. Hugh Sherrard was good enough to supply me with a list of all the trees and shrubs, so visitors with an interest can go out and see what we have. At over 300 years old, some of the trees are approaching the end of their life cycle. We have a 25-year-old woodland plan to ensure proper replanting and the County Council has been very supportive of this. All sorts of wildlife roam the place, including rabbits, pheasants, squirrels, and foxes.
The semi-ruinous rustic cottage within the exit of the hotel was once a
Milk Maids house and the last milk maid lived in it until 30 years ago and her daughter approached me recently to tell me that she was born and reared there.”

Issues impacting rating of cleanliness/upkeep/maintenance: dirty spots on headboard, dirty spot on drapes, dirty spots on couch
Issues impacting rating of facilities: Following use of my sink, it would gurgle/bang for several minutes as the water drained down the pipes. The toilet also had issues flushing all the toilet paper on my first day.
Issues impacting quality/variety of food: Low variety, but I suspect this may be due to the choices our company made during pre-planning.

The hotel is beautiful, and the grounds are absolutely stunning! Each employee I encountered was helpful and polite.

One thing to recommend: I was curious about the subjects/persons in the paintings found in the lobby and adjoining areas. Are they important to Irish/Cork culture? Were they the original owners of the building? Installing an explanation plate may help visitors feel a stronger connection to the building and the history.

We had a truly 5-star experience at the Maryborough. Starting with check-in, and throughout our stay, the staff was very welcoming and helpful. Johannes even insisted on taking our luggage up to our 2nd floor Junior Suite as it was in the older section of the hotel which has no elevator.
The suite was magnificent with high, wood beam ceilings and a separate living room and bedroom. The large bed was very comfortable and had 2 electric fans to keep us cool.
The suite amenities included a refrigerator with milk for the complimentary tea and coffee, 2 bottles of water and 2 bottles of wine (very unexpected and appreciated) and all the toiletries you'd expect from a 5-star resort.
We enjoyed the complimentary access to the spa's Thermal Suites and a fantastic breakfast each morning. We also had a wonderful dinner 1 night at the restaurant.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return should our travels bring us back to Cork.

We stayed for a wedding and first impressions were great, the reception team were welcoming, polite and informative. The bedroom was really nice with beautiful towels and toiletries. I would suggest having more adequate family rooms though as the square footage could easily allow for a family of four however you wouldn't be selling an adjoining room if this was possible. The function room and reception room were beautifully presented. The dance floor in the function room was tiny- that may have been chosen by the couple I'm not sure but if it was, should be advised by the wedding coordinator that its small. There was a young lady orchestrating the banquet and she couldn't have been more accommodating however let down by the service from the young uninterested staff. Things like having to ask for bread for the soup or my husband not getting a starter and my food been taken away when I was chatting to another guest. The food itself wasn't 5* either, cold starter, salty beef with gloppy gravy and unappetising childrens option. There wasn't enough bar staff on either and if he was making cocktails was backed up quickly. Evening food was nice however again the service from the young lad serving fries was woeful, he was taking it personal someone wants chips!!!
Breakfast the next morning wasn't a 5* experience either. We arrived at 10am (breakfast served till 11am) and there wasn't a massive variety on the buffet table -only coco pops, no bread/ toast, no fresh fruit left -in empty pineapple shells. To be fair there was beautiful smoked salmon (however no brown bread) and the cheese selection was nice and the honey was beautiful.
Once seated we had to call for someone to take tea/ coffee and call again to take order. I had full Irish and the sausage was lovely but left everything else. Leisure centre was nice but all in all we were disappointed in most aspects of the hotel & service and wouldn't recommend I'm afraid.

Really lovely hotel. Very friendly and helpful reception and the restaurant and bar staff were great. The dinner was delicious and fresh. Unfortunately the breakfast staff seemed a little bit rude and uninterested, walking away while saying “enjoy your meal” or “can I get you anything else” etc. The rooms are very quiet and couldn’t hear any noise even while in the hallway, which was great. I would definitely stay again but the bar and restaurant staff in the morning and afternoon were quite unfriendly and rude.
