My husband and I stayed at this B&B for two nights while on "Holiday" in Ireland. We had a wonderful time and Martin was amazing. He made great recommendations for a great day trip, dinner locations, and fun pubs with live music. We were stressed out when we arrived at this B&B due to a few wrong turns on the way into Cork. Martin helped us get our car parked and made us feel at home at the B&B. The rooms are small but the bed was very comfortable. Our room did not have a hair dryer. Martin offered to cook whatever we wanted for breakfast in the mornings and it was all delicious.

Room Tip: We had the room in the front. I believe it was number 1.

Great people, nice b and b on the right location. But if you have to share the bathroom 80 euros is worth it.
You can park your bikes in a locked garage.
Walk also up the hill to the cathedral.

In the fall 2013 my wife and I toured Ireland for 5 weeks by bus (Bus Eireann). No driving for us on the “wrong” side of the street! We chose lodging based primarily on 1) Location : close walking distance to center of town 2) TripAdvisor evaluations 3) cost (value). We stayed primarily in B & B’s. Our 4 nights with Martin and Margaret in the heart of the Shandon district of Cork were wonderful. A smallish room (typical for European cities) looked out over a quiet narrow street at Saint Annes Church Tower and The Firkin Crane. A few houses down from the B & B a path with some stairs led to a footbridge over the River Lee and the center of Cork. Martin is a great source for things to do & see and knows the history of the area (he grew up in it). Ask him about the name of the B& B. He also makes great breakfasts. Our room had a bathroom. Wi-fi worked well. While not luxurious, Butter Market House has great character and was a great value. The owners are first rate people. Highly recommended. (If you like Irish Trad, on Sunday nights Arundo plays at Counihans)

This was our first time staying at a B & B and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. The room was clean and quiet. Martin was a gracious host during our stay and offered us a home-cooked breakfast as well as interesting history about the house and area. The experience has definitely made us more likely to seek out B & B's in the future.

The perfect place if you're a first time visitor to Cork. Basic but spotlessly clean, warm, comfortable rooms, delicious breakfasts and a lovely welcome from hosts Martin and Margaret. On the practical side, this B&B is within easy walking distance from the city centre, but is lovely and quiet at night. There are plenty of places to choose from for your evening meal - if you can think of that after your excellent breakfast. Not for someone who is very unsteady on their feet, however, as the stairs reflect the age of the house. Whilst shallow, they slope sideways a little - I love them.
Martin is a mine of information and if he doesn't know the answer straight away - he will find out for you. I'm coming back to Cork on a regular basis for the next year or so - I'll be staying here as long as they have room for me. Many thanks.

All my reasons will read much the same
Martin..... The best host we had on our complete tour of Ireland and 12 B&B,s
Martin.......The best breakfast that he cooked to order every day
Martin.......The tour guide and recommendations for dinner and things to do and best pub
Martin ......The chauffeur... He went way out of his expected help when he guided us to our rental car drop-off at the airport..saw us thru all the difficulties of returning a Dan Dooley rental car ( and if you rent from Dooley you will find out that that is a very bad decision)..and then Martin chauffeured us back to Cork town
Martin.......The Cork historian....he is product of many generations of butter merchants and his B&B is the old family cheese business offices that he took 10 years to renovate into a B&B
Martins B&B is in a great location within 50 yards of a HOHO stop.. And we really used Corks HOHO buses
By the way..did I mention Martin being the reason we loved staying at Butter House ?

It was difficult for me to give this B&B just an average rating because Martin is such a pleasant host and deserves a 5. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and was a great storyteller. But I wasn't happy with my single bedroom nor the shared bathroom. The big double bed took up virtually all the space in the bedroom. Sitting anywhere was a cramped experience and the only place to put my carry-on luggage is on the floor or on a chair. The shower is probably the worst I've ever experienced. There was so little water and almost no pressure. Worse, it fluctuated between very hot and very cold randomly. Breakfast included the usual 4 B&B options in Ireland: Irish breakfast (sausages, bacon, eggs, pudding, tomato, toast)/bacon & eggs/ porridge, etc. The location is quite good as you're virtually in the city but away from traffic and pedestrian noise. However, it's an old wooden building so you'll clearly hear guests walking up the stairs and shutting their doors. If you're driving, it's really tricky to get to because of the very tight street and very limited parking spaces. You'll have to park on a nearby street and rely on the good man, Martin, to help you drive and park your car off-street.

Hi. Lenn, Thank you for your response. Yes we have addressed your comments on the shower issue, and hopefully this is now solved. Breakfast is available in many options and we appreciate if guests tell us of there preferences at time of check in, and we will always endeavour to meet all individual Requests. The house is of amazing historical interest, as it is synonymous with the distribution Of Butter world wide. It is a stone built building with 2ft. Thick walls (60cm.) of course the stairs is wooden, as Are the floors and doors, and of course with the age of the building (1864) it sometimes creaks occasionally . Thank you for your kind comments to myself. Best regards, Martin, info@buttermarkethouse.com

We stayed here one night during our trip to Ireland. I really recommend this B&B because a) Martin b) location c) Martin. He's a lovely man and made us feel very welcome. The room was a little small, but charming! And really it was so close to the city center of Cork! And secure parking and wifi, we felt well tucked in. I would definitely recommend.

We've been sleeping in this B&B 3 nites few weeks ago, during our second visit in Ireland.
What they say about Martin and family, is exactly the truth: kind, lovely and very caring ones, including the dog, Sammy! That actually the owner defined as "almost a cat", for it needs to be pet, and almost purrs!
The room (a double twin) was clean and shiny, the soap smell hits you as soon you come in! Also, it was very little, and the bath is in common with other rooms (that I didn't notice reading the reviews!), but everything - guests incuded - is so tiny and clean that you never are in uneasiness. The bathroom missed the hair dryer but Martin took it to me as soon as I asked for.
The position is quite good, in Shandon: not so lovely coming back at nite, but only for views: the city of Cork prefers to give more attention to the BEAUTIFUL centre, and they let Shandon a little dark. But anything is sure and peaceful, and in 5 mins by walking you're in the center of one of the most suggestive city of Ireland.
The breakfast is good, if you like the full english one: for me, that love with sweets, chocolate and other stuff, there was not so much! But Martin was able to find me a variety of cereals with chocolate that made me forgive anything :)
My friend, instead, liked very much the local breakfast, so here our pics to make you see!
The owners are really special persons, loving and caring their job and the people that they guest: anyway, it's impossibile to find this place with traditional channels (booking.com, etc.) so trust Tripadvisor and have a nite here, just to check!
Under the house there is the Butter Museum, that shows you the name of the place and something about the economy of the city: then a dance theatre, a nice bar, a lovely restaurant and St. Anne, the famous Shandon Church.

Butter Market B&B
Spent 4 nights at Butter Market. Nicely located just a short walk (5-10 min) to the center of Cork city. The room and bathroom are typical European size rooms. Room is nice, you share the bathroom. The owners Martin & his wife Margaret, were wonderful people, very friendly. Martin, would always have a full Irish breakfast for me every morning.
I did not have a car, so I used the public transportation system to get around which was quite easy with the help of Martin. He was always available to give directions or just to sit down over a cup of tea or coffee and talk about the history of Ireland. I learned quite a bit from him. Martin, even reminded me that the day I would be traveling by bus to Dublin, the Hurling championship game would be played the same day. He suggested I purchase my bus ticket the night before via the Internet which I did and he printed the ticket for me. And lucky for me that I did because the bus was full.
Plenty of shopping nearby at the English Market. He even recommended pubs that had good live music and food. Very good recommendations for food and pubs. Would definitely return.
