Very quirky place steeped in history and the previous reviews, if you read them, paint a good picture. We stayed in the double room, my daughter and her friend in the twin room above (with its excellent view to the Firth of Forth). Excellent location in the New Town, near the heart of Edinburgh, all the main attractions within walking... More

We had a great time at the Stevenson House. The owners are very friendly and helpful. On arrival they helped us with our luggage and recommendations for the festival. The room was great with old decorations and books of R.L. Stevenson. The the four-poster bed was very comfortable. The highlight was the original R.L. Stevenson bathroom with a great bathtub.... My son and I stayed for 2 nights in August during the festival. Stevenson House was our oasis of peace! We were warmly welcomed and felt immediately at home. Felicitas and John are outstanding hosts and the location of Stevenson House is ideal: everything is in walking distance. We hope to come back soon.

I was there for two nights together with my daughter. We were really impressed of the house: many books, pictures and other stuff gives it a magical attribute. The hosts did their very best to make us feel good.

I recommend this nice place for the warmth of the owner and its location close to everything and still quiet (even in the frantic August in Edinburgh). You are in the heart of New Town and in a short walk you reach Old Town, Carlton Hill or Stockbridge area.

Breakfasting at Stevenson House in the former reception room with its vast windows was a real treat. The dining table and buffet were set with continental delicacies including some low fat options such as hot smoked salmon and bircher muesli made with seasonal stone fruit. A bit later the tour buses slow up outside to peer into the former home... More

The four of us stayed for one night - one couple in the master bedroom and the other couple in the twin room. The whole house is an experience to stay in - amazing history, furniture and paintings. The host family is lovely - very accommodating and helpful in every way. The breakfast in the grand dining room was a... More

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in early July and enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the Macfie family. This is a true B&B: You are staying in someone's home. But it's a spectacular home, full of history, and supremely comfortable. For three days, we "lived" in one of the most exclusive areas of Edinburgh. John and Felicitas were... More

Felicitas and John and family have done a fantastic job of 'curating' this marvellous piece of history. Warm and inviting and the conversation and food - outstanding! Located within easy walking of the Royal Mile in the "new town" district of Edinburgh. The historical knowledge flowed easily during conversations and the strong sense that their patrons are very important was... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
