Stayed here for night after the rugby in February. The location is excellent and convenient for everything in Edinburgh. The room was nice and the staff helpful. The breakfast the next day was tasty and overall was a positive experience

I am still here at a most comfortable and welcoming establishment. My room is large and very quiet. As has been said before, the front rooms may well have a view but are much smaller and noisy as they overlook all the traffic. How long would you stare at the Castle in any case?! Delicious dinner and breakfast complete the...

If it wasn't for the staff I don't care to think how low I would have rated this hotel. We stayed here four nights and on the first morning the boiler had apparently broken down with the result that there was no hot water. Not the best start. However we were, on the first morning, pleasantly greeted by the breakfast...

A short 2 night break in the centre of Edinburgh at a bargain price. Excellent, friendly service from everyone which, coupled with top class breakfast, made this a great choice. Whilst the hotel is now in need of some tlc, this is superficial only as everything works well. Our room, number 14, had no view but was quiet, comfortable, warm...

Room overlooking Edinburgh Castle. It was on the 5th floor, so the windows were large portals. The view could only be seen if standing up. Although on Princes Street, room was very quiet. Plenty of space and a large en-suite. Breakfast is great and the dining room with its castle views is brilliant. Tip - Ask about the evening fixed...

If you like history with clean modern rooms, this is the hotel for you. Although our room didn't have a view, the restaurant/lounge area looks out on the hill and castle. A view that you can't get tired of. It is within walking distance of the castle (although uphill considerably). One of our friends had a room with a view...

Four of us stayed here for mid Xmas break. Ideal location only minutes from Waverley Station walking. If you get front rooms you'll get a good view of the castle. The hotel is a bit tired and in need of a make over but for us it was good value good position and a fantastic breakfast. Everything you could want....

Just stayed the one night to visit nearby Christmas market. Great location. Very friendly staff. Good breakfast. A little dated perhaps but still cosy. Ideally located for the shops on Princess Street and 15 mins walk from old town. Our room had great view of the castle.

This is my second time of staying here which says it all. The tram from the airport stops almost outside and the view of the Castle from the restaurant must be one of the best in Edinburgh. Very cheerful, friendly and helpful receptionist on arrival. We had a large double room, perhaps a little dated but very comfortable. We enjoyed...

This is a quirky place to stay on Princes Street at an unbelievably good price. It has the atmosphere of a gentleman's club (or at least how I imagine one would be - I've never been to one!). It is an old building but clean, comfortable and well-maintained. The staff could not have been more friendly - even offering to...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
