Stayed in the hotel April 14-19, 2017. The hotel is about 10-15 minute walk to the old town of Edinburgh where most of the tourist attractions are. The hotel itself is small, clean, and feels very "homey". The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast included is great and has several options, including a vegetarian option. The...

Very helpful and friendly staff. Great breakfast and nice room. Good value and quieter than lots of the big hotels on the main roads. Great you can walk to hotel from train station. We would definitely use this hotel again.

This small family run hotel is welcoming, clean and well located for the city centre and a short walk from Waveley station. Whilst no modern beauty the welcome was kind and attentive and the breakfast of a veritable feast. It a city of many branded hotels this is a pleasant spot with individuality. Rooms are spotless and warm - what...

I decided to stay at the Broughton based on all the wonderful reviews. I was not dissapointed. Its walking distance from everything and the rooms are clean and cozy. The breakfast was wonderful and they were able to accommodate my early rising times. I would definitely stay here again.

Nice hotel on a quiet back street, very good location, walking distance to Princess Street and Old Town (15-20 min). The Playhouse, pubs and restaurants around the corner. We had a triple room for four nights, small but expected so as the hotel is in an old georgian house. Clean, with kettle for tea/coffee and tasty shortbread every day. Breakfast...

We stayed at the Broughton Hotel for one night in march as we were coming up from Newcastle to see Micky Flanagan at the Playhouses theatre. We received a lovely friendly welcome and the free car parking was a real bonus. Next morning we had a gorgeous freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of choice. We would definitely stay again. Much...

The hotel has a lot of charme to it, with its beautifully decorated, clean rooms. Especially the friendliness of our hosts made the stay perfect. Not only do they make great breakfast, they are always available if you have a question regarding the city or a request considering the hotel itself. This created a very comfortable atmosphere, making our stay...

My husband and I stayed at this establishment for one night and the value was exceptional. The place is few minutes away from central location, without the noise. Our room was clean and cozy. Freddie was very friendly and provided excellent service. This place (more like bed & breakfast) was a great value.

We stayed for one night at The Broughton as we're going to see a show at the playhouse. The welcome was very friendly and helpful, not always what you get from the larger hotels. The free car parking was a huge bonus. The location is brilliant especially if you are going to the theatre. The breakfast the next morning was...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
