Warm welcome from Freddie set the scene for a great stay. Parking a big plus this close to city centre. You leave your keys in room in case car needs to be moved. Hotel very clean and warm. Our room had everything we needed and although close to centre very quiet at night. Only thing we found was that the...

I stayed in this family run B&B with my teenage daughter for a short break away. The owner, Freddie, was lovely - he was very helpful and attentive. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious (cooked by Freddie). There was tea, coffee, hot chocolate and shortbread in the bedroom, which was restocked each day. The property is within walking distance of...

Stayed here for a cold, wet (well, it is Edinburgh) evening and would give every aspect 5/5/ Very warm welcome from the married couple in charge, room clean and large, tremendous location (5-10min from shops and tourist sights and whisky pubs) and the morning breakfast was much better than the soggy gruel I've paid a tenner for in dozens of...

My parents and I stayed at the Broughton for one night. It's location is incredibly convenient for visit the primary sites of Edinburgh. We easily walked to Calton Hill and the royal mile. Breakfast in the morning was scrumptious and service during our stay incredibly courteous.

Lovely little family run hotel in heart of Edinburgh with free parking. Although a little tired and dated, it was clean, comfortable and welcoming. Blissfully quiet at night. One of the very best cooked breakfasts I have had at any hotel, with excellent service and attention to detail.

It was the greatest idea to book a room in this hotel. It is running by a family so you can imagine hoy close the treat is. A two-floors hotel with just six bedrooms, so there are problems at all about noises. Traditional scottish breakfast every morning to get enough energy to wander around the city! The location is incredible....

I myself have visited edinburgh on numerous occasions. This time we took the other halfs parents and we wanted somewhere within walking distance but off the busy streets and The Broughton Hotel is perfect for just that. 10 minutes and you are on Princess Street. The Hotel itself is quaint and old, but tasteful. I actually found it because of...

Best breakfast ever, the service was excellent. The hotel location is perfect for a 10 min walk after eating at the city center, there was tea, coffee and hot chocolate waiting for us at the room with nice shortbread cookies and chocolates to finish a great day at Edinburgh... 100% recommended!

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
