Yes, there's a lot of stairs to climb at Elder York Guest House. We wera aware of 2 flights of them but surprised to discover it was actually more than that! With heavy luggage for a 3 weeks tour of Scotland, that was a lot. We managed but were really happy to meet the owner's son the last day and...

We stayed here one night after our 3 day Isle of Skye tour. It is very close to Waterloo Place were the tour bus drops you off.It is located in New Town Edinburg and at the last stop on the tram, which made it very convenient to get to the airport via the tram, which took 35 mins.We had made an...

Stayed for a few nights before flying back to Oz ...and yes I was aware of the many stairs !!! Owner had his son assist with luggage ( thank god ) Room was a bit cramped with 2 suitcases and cabin bags but functional. My biggest grievance was the road noise ! We were in a room on the fron...

Stayed during the Edinburgh fringe with friends. The lady in charge was really friendly & helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are quite expensive but you are just off St Andrews square & really central only 5 minutes from Waverly. The whole place is spotlessly clean & the breakfast was excellent! Would definitely go back.

As others have reported the 43 steps up to reception are a workout but so well worth it for the great location, great welcome, comfortable clean room and very good breakfast. Harry, Shirley and Murray go the extra mile for their guests, providing information, directions, booking us a taxi, storing luggage and all with good humour. A very well run guest...

We stayed for one night at the Elder York, which we enjoyed very much. Breakfast was great and plentiful, our room was clean and a good size. Very central for the city. And I must compliment the owners Harry and Shirley for kindly returning my jacket to me that Ieft I behind. First class friendly service which is much appreciated....

From outside, Elder York Guest House, is small and unassuming, and as mentioned by other guests, there are a few flights of stairs to reach the reception...but these are minor trivialities. Once inside, the place is warm, cosy and spotlessly clean. Murray was the pleasant young man who checked us in, the welcome was warm and genuine and he offered...

House is typical, room is comfortable and has everything you need. Location is just perfect. Good breakfast, with Scottish delights. Lovely atmosphere... Definitely recommend if you want a taste of pure Scotland and not just a place to sleep.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
