Stayed 4 days starting New Years Day on visit from Canada with my bro-in-law in a room with 2 twins. This could be a great experience for the travelling public with a few simple improvements. For starters there's really no excuse for the room key swipe cards to not work! We were in the furthest room possible from the front...

The venue was in a great location for our needs. The hotel was clean and nice with friendly, helpful staff. Breakfast was a bit manic as it was so busy- but to be expected after Hogmanay in Scotland!! On Sunday the 4th January Samantha was particularly helpful finding us the tools we needed to enjoy a late Christmas present while...

This is my second visit to this hotel and I don't think it will be my last. Its clean and comfortable and handy for all the sites of Edinburgh and inexpensive. It also includes breakfast which consists of continental items as well as scrambled egg, sausages and beans. Not the best breakfast ever but still pretty good for what you...

Really nice hotel & good service from staff. Only issue was that the room key cards frequently did not work & had to be exchanged every time we left the room. Really centrally located opposite the cinema, virgin active & lots of restaurants.

Stayed one night 13th of Dec, all staff very polite and helpful. Had room on 6th floor at back of hotel, very guiet. Only problem was the room was cold even with heater on full blast, we asked for extra bedding and the receptionist was very helpful providing this for us. The hotel is well located for bars, restaurants, theatre,...

I've stayed in many Holiday Inn Express Hotels in The UK and around Europe - it tends to be the safer option as they're all the same. However, this one didn't rate as one of the best. I'll give credit where credit's due - the front office staff were very accommodating and made check in and check out very quick...

We came to Edinburgh for a wedding at Mansfield Tracquaire and thought it would be a good idea to find a hotel within walking distance. Certainly not a fan of the Holiday Inn Express experience... This was my first & last. Clean hotel, courteous staff, limited but rare city parking next to hotel directly across road from Playhouse Theatre vs uncomfortable bed, disorganised & poor breakfast... really depends what you're looking for but I've enjoyed far better stays within city centre.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
