Room was good but the only power point I could find was at the workstation - the other side of the room from the mirror so using a hot brush to style my hair was a challenge. Shower room was very clean - room had a couple of stains. Staff were good and helpful. I was on the 4th floor...

Spent the night here in February. Very clean fresh rooms. The breakfast was included in the price and was lovely. The only draw back was the TV. Of all the channels available only about half worked. Only annoyed cause I couldn't find a film to watch after a night out. Definitely wouldn't stop me staying again though.

I haven't stayed in a HIX for a few years, but you know exactly what you get and this was no exception. I was lucky and managed to grab a room in a good sale so value for money was fantastic. Location is fantastic with lots on your doorstep - great if attending a show at The Playhouse Theatre. Staff...

I was in Edinburgh for a couple of nights and got a great price on this hotel. The location was great, walking distance to everything and a quick 1 minute walk to the train that goes to/from the airport (great way to save on money). The hotel has a great complimentary continental breakfast that was rather busy when I was...

This hotel is located in such a great location, oppersite the Edinburgh playhouse, 10mins walk from Waverly train station and within walking distance of plenty of bars and restaurants. The room was good standard typical holiday Inn you know what get. Staff friendly and a good free breakfast. Would stop again.

Booked a weekend away to celebrate anniversary. Arrived to twin room even though we had booked a double. They changed this no problem. Then a dog barking all hours of the morning so asked to move rooms. Sent us to a room which hadn't been cleaned. Moved again to a twin room with no heating and tv didn't work. Eventually...

This was our first stay at this hotel but it won't be the last. The room was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The staff we encountered were, without exception, polite, friendly and helpful. Straight across from the Playhouse Theatre this hotel holds an outstanding location. Seconds from a host of bars, restaurants, fast food, shops and the Omni centre. The rooms are nice though basic but ideal and at £60 per night they are amazing value for Edinburgh. The breakfast is free and was good. Everything was stress free and a perfect base...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
