Lisa was very friendly, genuine, & welcoming! The dog, Jake, is super sweet as well. The room my husband and I had was gorgeous & spacious with a lovely view. The bed was incredibly comfortable & we slept well every night. It was very quiet and peaceful, and the breakfast was delicious! We would highly recommend this B&B to anyone;...

Booked it for my parents as their silver anniversary and they have just loved it!! So much that my mum that is coming to see me again wanted to stay there again. Wonderful looking rooms, nice and welcoming host.

I had a fantastic time in Edinburgh staying at Ellesmere House. On arrival it was quiet so I was upgraded to a larger room which was massive and beautifully decorated. It was clean, comfortable with lovely soft bed linen and thick fluffy towels. As a vegetarian you can sometimes feel a little left out at breakfast but not here! I...

My husband and I had a lovely stay at the weekend in Ellesmere House. The service was excellent from the minute we booked. The room was comfy and clean and breakfast was delicious. Location was great, 15 min walk into the centre and 5 minutes to Usher Hall where we had a concert one evening. We visit Edinburgh often and...

We arrived for a very quick stay. Coming in fairly late one evening and leaving again before breakfast the next morning. A packed beakfast was arranged and a taxi ordered and everything went like a charm. Luckily we were also fortunate enough to come back for a second stay on out way back, and this time we got to sit...

Ellesmere House is a perfect B&B for a family visit to Edinburgh. Pretty central it's an easy 15/20 minute walk into the centre. Ellesmere House is beautifully decorated but has real homely feel. We had all 4 rooms which made for a very relaxing stay. Lisa and Gordon were the most welcoming of hosts. Nothing was too much trouble from...

Ellesmere was our favorite place we stayed during our month long trip. Lisa was a perfect hostess and has a flair for decorating. We stayed in a lovely, comfortable, classically decorated room overlooking their garden. She had cookies and port awaiting our arrival. She greeted us warmly and shared helpful information about places to see, eat, ongoing events and directions....

This is a beautiful house with individually decorated rooms. We had three between us and all were equally attractive. Lisa is a lovely lady who is extremely welcoming and friendly. The breakfasts were delicious and served in the downstairs breakfast room overlooking the garden having chosen what you'd like the night before. The house is located over looking a green...

I absolutely loved staying at Ellesmere House! It is beautifully decorated, well located and Lisa is a very friendly and helpful host. The only thing I can think of that wasn't excellent was the selection of bread available for breakfast, but then British are not exactly famous for their bread culture... However, with this being the only issue I can...

Everyone at Ellesmere House was welcoming and very friendly. The house is amazing and the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was very tasty. Nothing was too much trouble and the port in the room was a lovely little touch.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
