This is a very good location if you are planning to do site seeing, the bus stop only a few steps away, station and also bars and restaurants. The staff is very helpful and can give you a lot of information on restaurant and best way to experience Edinburgh. Rooms are clean and spacious and continental breakfast is served every... More

Really sweet hotel with very friendly staff, conveniently placed only 5 minutes walk from Haymarket station, or a 30 second walk from Wester Coates bus stop where the Airlink bus stops. Good value and nice breakfast, would definitely go again.

Really pleased I found this hotel. The location in excellent, 10 min walk to Haymarket with its restaurants, bars and railway station. On main bus link to the Airport and Zoo. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. My room was spacious, clean and quiet. A new carpet and new mattress on the bed would make a great improvement but... More

We stayed here to go to the rugby back in May, and loved it. The room rate was very competitive, the rooms was spacious and clean (not perfect decor wise, but it had charm), and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We will return next time we re going to Murrayfield!

The first problem we had was that we couldn't even find the hotel because it has changed its name before we arrived. The sign did not say "The Original Raj". As we arrived in the hotel the rooms were just about to be cleaned so we came back for a later check in in the evening hours. As we entered... More

We spent 5 nights there. Great value, close to train station and a fun walk to Prince's Ave, the Royal Mile & Edinburgh Castle. The staff was amazing, friendly, attentive and respectful. They even upgraded our room at no charge. Charming inside and out. No ice maker in the building and no fridge, but the staff were kind enough to... More

The staff is friendly, but we paid 8 pounds for breakfast which was way overpriced for what was offered. Staff claimed they had no kitchen facilities. We were told by neighbors that the kitchen had caught fire some time ago. We also got bitten by bed bugs... and I pray we did't bring any back home with us. To top... More

We really enjoyed our stay at the Raj, it's in a brilliant location for exploring Edinburgh. We got the Airlink bus to and from the airport which stopped just outside of the hotel. There were also regular buses from outside the hotel to the city centre and trams from Murrayfield or Haymarket, but we choose to walk as the weather... More

We both enjoyed our stay at the the Raj. Some people must be fusspots , cosidering the excellent rates. The room and the staff were great . The bus stops every few minutes outside the hotel , and drops you off in Princes St. J.Ramsay.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
