I stayed here one night to meet my sons in town for the Festival, a single room and private bathroom with breakfast sounded like just what I needed. I arrived to be shown my single room, it was pretty small and no bathroom in the room as I understood from the description. As another reviewer pointed out it involves going...

Hi there Thanks for your review. Room 1a's website description is accurate, stating it has its own private facilities. However I will look at the website and try and make the description less confusing for some, many thanks for pointing this out. Glad you loved the big breakfast and our location. with kind regards Patricia and Matthew

really lovely accommodation in a good location that's easy to walk to the centre of town. the owners are really friendly and helpful. inside the building itself is beautiful and the room is nice and light. the bed was comfy and there were a couple of sitting chairs and a table. nice big closet and the shower had good water...

Having looked at reviews prior to booking I'd expected a bit more. Wound up booking on Orbitz and it didn't indicate that my room did not have en suite bath. Upon check-in, staff informed me of this, which was disappointing. Then she stated breakfast hours, which didn't begin until 8, which seem late for a weekday. If you're unable to...

There are definitely some good points: the host is nice, the breakfast is quite good, and the common lounge is very comfy. But there are problems. The room itself was very small, the furniture was very uncomfortable (it's one of those beds where you can feel the springs...awful chair), the bathroom was only accessible by entering into the hallway (this...

Spent just one night! Room was quaint and pretty with a lovely garden view. Matthew was very helpful especially allowing me to store my luggage after check out to catch my bus at 10PM. That gave me lots of time exploring the city without lugging a suitcase and backpack with me.

The best thing about this hotel was its location, being only a short walk from the last tram stop, and close to the centre of Edinburgh. There were plenty of places to eat nearby, from all corners of the globe. Fabulous architecture. Breakfast was plentiful and very good.

Only a couple blocks from the end of the tram line that runs into town from the airport, the Halcyon Guest House is affordably priced and only about a 15 minute walk to Waverly Station, 25 minutes to the Royal Mile. The managers are very accommodating, the breakfasts that come with the room are excellent - full Scottish or any...

Many thanks for your lovely review. Guests are amazed that you can be in our Georgian hotel on a quite leafy terrace road so close to the city centre. Our breakfast is part of the price (many charge extra for this) - so that really helps guests budgets. Hope to see you again soon. with kind regards Patricia and Matthew

Great hotel, welcoming staff. Excellent location. Lovely garden views. Would stay here again. I had a large family room, plenty of space. The owner was very nice, he really couldn't have been nicer. Planning a visit again next year and will definitely return

I stayed here once in 2014 for one night, and I really enjoyed my stay. I just got back from a week in Edinburgh and booked my room here again. I thought it was great. Matthew, Patricia and the girls are all very nice, helpful and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again. I booked a single room on the...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
