My wife and stayed here for two nights, and we found the hotel to superb. Reception was very friendly and efficient at checking us in. We had booked a junior suite, which I must say had enough room to swing the metaphorical cat. The bedroom and bathroom where spotless. Our room came with a free minibar. Don't get too excited... We stayed for a weekend break in October 2016. The lady on the desk was very friendly and welcoming. We had a superior king room. The room was lovely and bed extremely comfortable! The complimentary mini bar was a nice touch. There was free luggage storage which we used to leave our bags so we could wander around before the... More

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in the month of October. The check in process was quick and the reception staff were friendly and informative. The room was in good order and well appointed with hairdryer, iron, ironing board, kettle and fridge stocked with complimentary snacks and juice. The room was clean and was extremely... More

I usually stay at HI Express with my IHG membership and account. However when I went online to book I found there was almost no difference in price between this hotel and the HI Express across the road, so I booked this one for a change. Reception and welcome was warm, friendly and very competent. We arrived early and left... More

Our original allocated room was a junior suite, but when we arrive in the room it was in the basement of this beautiful old building which we did not expect. The Ceilings were low and the room had a very strange layout which made the room feel claustrophobic. The room also had a soil pipe running down the middle of... More

Dear Ryan W, Thank you for the candid review. I am very sorry you were not satisfied with your stay, especially with the smaller room you have received, and for the issues with the bathroom, bar, and breakfast selection. Our hotels are known for high standards and I am very sorry that we fell short on this occasion. Your feedback... More

I am always amazed when traveling with another couple how we can end up with different sized rooms at the same price. our friends get the big room and an elevator. We get a tiny room, a maze to find it, and a climb up the stairs. The room and its amenities were just fine. If staying here you might... More

We have stayed in Edinburgh a few times and have mixed success finding a place to stay. Having already stayed at Indigo in York we knew the standard they aim for. This hotel is well placed, it was in walking distance of Waverley station but far enough from the Royal Mile to mean the price wasn't ridiculous. The hotel is... More

This was our first visit to Edinburgh. We looked for a reasonably priced hotel that was located close to the main attractions. This hotel fit the bill. We were able to walk to Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street Garden, Palace Holyroodhouse, Botanic Gardens and Royal Mile. There were many great restaurants and pubs close by as well as a tram stop... The hotel was situated in New Town, about 10-15 minutes from the heart of Old Town Edinburgh, so we liked the location. It was outside the main tourist area and had a few decent restaurants and a small grocery store nearby. Upon checking in we were given our room number and instructions to find the room. It was on the... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
