My partner and I spent a night here on the 10th April. We were £165 for the night and we were in a basement room that faced a brick wall with no natural light. It was so dark and dingy and just not worth the money. Upon checking out, the receptionist asked my thoughts and I replied what I have...

Stayed two nights. Room was not so big and no view from window. Bed was really comfortable. Shower room big and well appointed. Lunch party food was very good as was the service. We had lunch the following day and again thoroughly recommended. Bar was lively both during the day and evening. All the staff were friendly and efficient. Front...

Initially we booked at Holiday Inn which was...overbooked. Indigo was a kind of upgrade, both hotels are very close to each other, indeed. No view at all (small patio) but comfortable (small!) room. Breakfast items could be improved. Staff : efficient, smiling at the breakfast room , quite indifferent at the reception (all of them).

Got to be the comfiest bed I've ever slept on in a hotel. The room was clean and the staff friendly. Whilst the breakfast wouldn't win any awards it adequate. The tram terminus is right outside the front door so a day ticket for £4 is a stunning way of seeing the city and enjoying the bars of Rose Street...

I spent an amazing weekend in Edinburgh after my husband took me for a romantic birthday treat! I have stayed at the Hotel Indigo in Glasgow a few years ago and was very impressed. The York Place venue didn't disappoint. It feels very high-end without breaking the bank. On arrival we were greeted by a very bubbly receptionist who wanted...

We stayed here for four nights and loved every minute the location of the hotel was excellent, eating places and shops just around the corner, Princess St. a few minutes walk the other way or hop on the tram that stopped outside the hotel door. The room was very clean, and well serviced, the complimentary fridge was a nice touch,cans...

We stayed in the cutest room in Hotel Indigo. It couldn't be a better location with AMAZING shops and restaurants nearby and the old city just over the bridge! I wish I could have stayed here for longer, and it will be my first choice if I ever come back!

We arrived at night and had a quick check-in. The breakfast was good, you can try the Scottish breakfast if you want. The continental breakfast was okay, but could use an upgrade. Make sure you come early so it's less crowded and noisy. The size of the bedroom was good, I loved the high ceilings. The location was downtown and...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
