So I'm staying here with my Granny for our week in Scottland. So far the stay has been splendid in both our opinions. We arrived very late (10.30 pm) but the receptionist was both welcoming and helpful. It is an old building, gregorian (I think) in style and very old fashioned (in a good way). We have a room in...

A comfortable place to stay in Edinburgh though it definitely won't knock your socks off. The decor was charming, it was quiet, decent breakfast, good size rooms, and easily accessible by tram from the airport. The rickety, steep staircase was like no other, but it only contributed to the place's charm. The only negative was that our shower drain was...

The best thing about this hotel is that it is close to the city centre and the major attractions in Edinburgh. Another good thing about it, is the included breakfast. It´s nothing to write home about, but it is good to not have to look for somewhere to eat in the morning. But I think the facility needs to be...

We stayed for 4 nights in the 'Garden Apartment' as we thought it would be nice for the children to have a bit of outside space. The 'garden' is just an overgrown mess of brambles which is inaccessible and the 'delightful patio' is a dumping ground for broken patio doors. The apartment is a damp basement with threadbare carpets. It...

My partner and I booked this hotel on a budget, mainly due to a combination of its price and its location. The location is particularly good, being about a ten minute walk from Edinburgh's main train station and Prince's Street, and within walking distance of all the city's main attractions such as the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. We had...

During the Fringe this was a disaster. The room was cramped and badly organised. There was a bedside table and a lamp, but neither was anywhere near the bed. The lamp could have been plugged in near the bed, if you draped the wire over the bed! There was no where to put anything or unpack the suitcase. There was...

The location of the Regent House Hotel is by far its strongest asset and for a Fringe break (as this was) it is sufficient to rest one's head for a night or two. Sitting just 10 minutes' walk from Waverley this holds a prime spot for getting about. Where it lets itself down is with its facilities and breakfast. The...

We stayed at the apartment during the Edinburgh Festival. The apartment was damp, dusty and in a state of disrepair to the extent we felt it was dangerous to have young children stay there. Overgrown garden to the extent it could not be used, broken wardrobe doors, missing light fittings, dirty utensils, 2 table spoons between us and the wifi...

Our basic rule for trying somewhere is do the 4 & 5 star reviews outnumber the 1 and 2 star ones. Regent House was borderline but we're glad we took the risk. As we have a 7 year old we ideally wanted a triple en suite room in a decent location. Regent House was pretty much the only option for...

I stayed at Regent House Hotel mid July for 2 nights. the hotel was perfectly located for the train station, shops and bars. I arrived to a warm and friendly welcome. My room was on the 3rd floor and although there is no lift I didn't find the stairs an issue. The room was clean although in need of a...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
