All in all this hostel is very clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the common areas are welcoming and cosy. I also felt very safe here due to the security measures and the location is perfect. The downsides are you can often hear music through the window, although it did stop after midnight. There are personal plugs and lights but they are so bright you might as well have the main light on so bring an eyemask just in case.

Hi there, thanks for your feedback about your stay with us - we're glad you enjoyed your stay with us. So sorry about the street noise - unfortunately our super central location right on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh's bustling and most famous street, sometimes comes with a bit of noise. We hope to see you here again some time!

I stayed at the Royal Mile for 1 night before going on a Haggis Adventure tour around Scotland. The location was very convenient for where the tour starts from. The staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms were tidy and quiet. Good location to get into the main town area as well, around 7-11 minute walk to the shops and main attractions. Also a 7 minute walk from where the airport bus drops you off. It is not a super social hostel, the sister hostel (High St hostel) across the road is much bigger and has organised social events. This is a nice hostel if you want a quiet night. Also you have to walk up some stairs to get into the reception area so not very accessible if you have trouble with stairs or have large suitcases.

Hi there, thanks for the lovely review - we're glad you had a good stay with us here at the Royal Mile Backpackers before your tour. We are a very small hostel and we like to be a home away from home. All our guests can participate in the events we have on with our 2 bigger sister hostels but come back to a homely place to sit and chill in front of the fire-place with a book in their hand and a free hot drink. Sorry about the stairs: like most hostels in Edinburgh or, in fact, many parts of Edinburgh itself, we're only accessible by stairs! We hope to see you here again some time!

I'm so glad I chose to stay at this hostel during my trip to Edinburgh. The location of it made it really convenient to get around. I only noticed the noise from a pub one night around 10ish. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. I stayed in a female dorm and there were plugs and book lights in each bunk. The breakfast wasn't free but worth it for the reasonable price. The free tea was nice after a cold day. I was able to store my luggage before check-in which was really nice. I had the chance to visit other hostels in the city and I feel like I lucked out with this one. It's on the smaller side so it felt very welcoming and had a good sense of community. They post group activities by the front desk and I did a couple and they were so much fun. I loved Edinburgh and would definitely stay here again.

Friendly staff would welcome you almost 24/7, but the place is rather compact with not a lot of room for everyone in the kitchen, especially at breakfast times. Ideally located on the Royal Mile, with easy access to most attractions!

This was my first time staying in a hostel, and I have to say it surpassed my expectations. I was terrified before visiting, but it was quite pleasant! I have previously only stayed in hotels and BnBs with my family, but as I was travelling with a few friends, and we are all students, our budget requires us to stay in hostels. I was pleasantly surprised though as this hostel was quite comfortable! The room was very clean and well taken care of. I was in an 8 bed dorm and there was enough space for everyone. Everyone was respectful of each other's space and kept their belongings on or under their beds so there was floor space! There are enough lockers that each person can have one, you give a 10 pound key deposit for your locker and get the money back when you return your key. There is a small kitchen, but big enough as the hostel is quite small, so there aren't too many guests. There is also a very small lounge area where you can borrow one of their many books. The wifi was very good for our 4 night stay. The location is absolutely fantastic, very central! You're in the middle of everything and can easily visit all the attractions, many amazing restaurants/pubs etc! The issue with the location though is that as it's central there are a lot of people in the street at all hours. Noise was an issue. The room was quite warm as it's small, we were 8 people, and they don't have ac in Europe really- meaning we had to keep the windows open, meaning we had no buffer from the street noise. I am a very bad sleeper, but earplugs helped a bit. My friends are all good sleepers and they had no issue. The noise was also worse because we were visiting during the Fringe, I'm sure it's slightly better other times of year. The beds were pretty hard, but they were beds so were good enough for me. Clean and comfortable sheets made it better! The hostel itself was quiet as they have a quiet after 10pm rule. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, I liked everyone I met. There are a couple outlets for each bed, so enough to plug everything in. Each bed also has a small light so you don't turn on the overheads at night. They have a fantastic 4 pound laundry service (they wash, dry and fold your clothes and then put them back on your bed!). Towels are very large and fluffy, and very cheap to rent! There are hooks in the room to hang coats and such. Overall this was a good first experience at a hostel, I would recommend staying here. Again, the location is phenomenal!

Hi there, it's great to hear you had a pleasant first hostel stay with us here at the Royal Mile Backpackers. The idea to share a room with strangers can be a bit terrifying when your not used to it. I'm glad you did enjoy your time with us. Sorry about the street noise - unfortunately our super central location right on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh's most famous street, sometimes comes with a bit of noise from the outside. Especially during the Fringe festival when everything is open so long and there are so many people around. We're glad you enjoyed your experience and will stay in lots of hostels again after!
