This was a late booking, and the person I spoke with on the phone was very helpful. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and there was a great choice for breakfast the next day. All at very affordable prices. The hostel has recently been refurbished, and coping with well with the roadworks outside. I'd recommend staying and eating here for the quality, the prices and the helpful staff.

The most recent reviews are all critical. Let's see... Staff not nice? My experience was precisely the opposite. Unhelpful with luggage store? Again, my experience was precisely the opposite. More expensive for a member of a recognised hostelling association? Yet again, my experience was precisely the opposite. Noisy? Only because of the French guy snoring in the bunk below. The staff were very helpful in finding me another room. I'd like to go back when the refurbishments are complete.

The hostel is being refurbished, ok, understand... so maybe before you go you should know that there are not any of the facilities that they promote. So, common areas is just the entrance, there's no kitchen available for the customer, the loundry was out of order. The staff was not nice at all. The lady's dorm was really dirty, when I arrived it was already dirty, the next day I had to ask if somebody could clean it and they said we only clean if there were any checkouts, I had to communicate that there had been two checkouts that day. They later sent someone that just did the toilet. The shower was disgusting and they didn't clean it, the floor was not vacuumed, and there was trash all around.

Guys- if you’re looking for help as a traveller with your bags- don’t look to this hotel. I have travelled to many countries over many years- this hostel is really the meanest about luggage I have ever seen- very disorganised and very unhelpful. I had two bookings at the hotel with a one and a half day gap in the middle and asked if they could look after my bags in between. I checked the day before if they could look after them. They said they could for five pounds per night, per bag. Most hotels are happy to look after your bags for free to help travellers out- it is a massive hostel and they have plenty of room so would be nice if they could be accommodating to existing customers. The morning I went to drop off my bags an abrupt woman at reception just said “we don’t look after luggage”. I was on my way to the station to catch a train!!! I explained her colleague had given me the opposite advice the day prior before. She reluctantly agreed after prolonged discussions with no apology to me for the inconsistent advice. When I got back to the hotel and went to pick up my bag, reception asked me “where is your bag?”. I said I should be the one asking them that- I would expect staff to know where luggage was kept. Reception then demanded that I (the exhausted traveller) come with them to help them search for it in the staff rooms, carrying my heavy overnight bag. Don’t staff even know where they keep luggage? So disorganised! Travelling is hard enough without having to deal with this. The general attitude of the staff seemed to be to make their job as easy as possible with little or no thought to helping the traveller. I’d often go down to the reception to find staff more involved in their social chats with colleagues than serving people at reception. The general attitude of the staff was terribles management needs to give staff customer service a serious shakeup. Apart from that hotel is in a good-ish location (you can walk to Royal Mile in about 20mins but it is not on your doorstep, Waverley station around 10-15mins walk away). Rooms were ok- about what I had expected for rate. Cafe downstairs was convenient- food ok- but again staff attitude was poor. Nice that they have a lot of private rooms with bathrooms in them avail. Hostel has a lot of potential- but without more work from management to get the staff up to scratch the customer service will continue to let it down. Sure this is fixable if management set clear expectations about is expected from staff. Staff need to be trained to make an effort with customer service rather treating guests like institution inmates (their general attitude was very offhand, arrogant and inappropriate). Hope this is helpful and staff improve. Please help out travellers with luggage if you can- travelling is hard enough for us all.

Nice place, very clean, nice kitchen and dinning hall. Tha location is not very good, but not bad anyway... you have to walk up and down all the time in Edinburgh. The problem is that you don't have to be a member of HOSTELLING SCOTLAND because if you are a member you HAVE TO PAY MORE FOR ACCOMODATION. It is real... I payed for my membership 15 £ hopefully to pay less for my booking. But NOT... I PAYED MORE. They prommesed to refund me the membership payment but not... They are not honest people... be careful... DON´T BE A MEMBER OF HOSTELLING SCOTLAND
