A great hotel; unique and far from the boring corporate style and service of larger chains. The hotel has great Georgian character and proportions and the room was fantastic. Service was friendly and attentive.

This is a fantastic boutique hotel. Great location & excellent attention to detail. We stayed in room 14 on the top floor. Excellent view & we got to see all the fantastic art. We arrived on a Sunday and found free on road parking right outside the hotel. From 08:30 on Monday that changes from £2/hour for a maximum of... More

We arrived on a cold Tuesday afternoon in November, slightly before check in time. The welcome shown by staff was warm and friendly, and this hospitality continued throughout our stay. They made every effort to prepare the room as quickly as possible - we were travelling with a slightly grumpy 3 month old baby who needed to rest. We enjoyed... More

Cozy bar, good food (the lamb shoulder is so tasty!), great liquor selection. Especially for whiskey, it has an impressive huge collection of rare single malts. Can't miss it. Breakfast seems also fantastic.

This hotel is worthy of it's good reviews. It is in a quiet area with plenty of paid onstreet parking, close to the Playhouse Theatre and a number of restaurants and about a leisurely 15 minutes walk from Waverley Station. We received a warm friendly welcome and were helped with our luggage to our room downstairs which was apartment 2.... More

I really wanted this to be a great experience but unfortunately it wasn't the best. I called up in advance to specifically choose my room as I was quite excited to stay at this new hotel given the reviews. The check-in process was fairly straight forward and I loved the art on the way up to my room. My room... More

Stayed here for a couple of nights while we explored Scotland and it was beautiful! The room was huge and they made sure that our stay was perfect! We had to go out early one morning and they made sure that food was available to us if we wanted it and all of the staff we're so friendly. I would... More

The hotel is small, and located a bit away from the old town and new town areas. In summer it would be a fine walk, but in the cold it seemed a bit out of the way. I had a single room, which was very small but efficiently organized with everything I needed for a short stay. It had a... More

Quirky art, spacious quiet rooms, not overrun by tourists, great location, amazing bar with cocktails, equally good breakfast - what more could you possibly ask for? Oh yeah, incredibly friendly and helpful staff that will go out of their way to ensure you have a fantastic stay.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
24 Royal Terrace is a new hotel on one of Edinburgh’s most iconic Georgian terraces. Designed by the famous architect William Playfair in the 1820s, the 16-bedroom hotel retains the original architectural features of the building whilst introducing a bold contemporary interior design. Situated in close proximity to the town centre, the hotel backs onto the Royal Gardens of Holyrood Palace and Calton Hill with commanding views across to the Firth of Forth. All rooms offer beautiful views, either of the hotel’s garden or onto the majestic Royal Terrace itself. Suited to both business and leisure guests, the rooms vary from spacious apartment suites to affordable single rooms. Our elegant rooms are designed for comfort and relaxation with stylish contemporary fabrics, heavenly beds, White Company toiletries, plump white towels and Egyptian cotton sheets. Mixing the old with the new, the suites comprise antique furniture with modern touches. Some rooms feature cast iron baths in the bedroom, whilst others have rain showers in the bathroom. All bedrooms offer wireless and wired internet connection to ensure guests can tap into our high speed internet, have Samsung Smart TVs fitted with amplified Soundbars and Apple Airport Express, enabling guests to stream audio and video from their own devices or from their NetFlix accounts, plus USB power sockets for charging devices. The entertainment isn’t limited to the bedroom; in the en-suite bathrooms, guests can control their music from a keypad to play over high quality Blucube speakers. The hotel features a private, original art collection including works by Scottish artists John Bellany, Peter Howson, Steven Campbell, Henry Kondracki and John Bratby. 24 Royal Terrace’s facilities include rt’s bar, a stylish meeting point for guests serving a carefully selected menu, from Scottish and continental breakfast in the morning, to tapas in the evening. A champagne afternoon tea is also on offer at rt’s between 2 and 5pm daily. rt’s serves a fine range of whiskies, playing to Royal Terrace’s historical nickname, ‘Whisky Row’, a reference to the number of spirit merchants who lived on the terrace when it was newly built. ... more   less
