This hotel is a nice combination of local charm with modern conveniences. Rooms and beds were comfortable (once I figured out how to work the thermostat). Represents a very good value....you get a lot of hotel for the cost. Good restaurant as well!

I booked this hotel to celebrate a special 50th Birthday. Everything was taken care of for us right down to tiny details, I knew what I wanted to organise and Jenna, Paulina and Laura made it so simple for me. They sorted out a private dinner, and a cocktail masterclass - the birthday girl and the ladies had a fabulous...

We arrived with our Sainsbury's bags in tow (just a short walk from the hotel) and dressed rather shabbily but the receptionist greeted us without batting an eye:) We were attending a wedding and decided to treat ourselves as it was also our birthdays. The staff were all amazing, the cocktails sublime, and the food out of this world. I...

Recently stayed here for 1 night as me and my mum came to visit some family/ do some shopping. We arrived at the hotel at around 11:30am just wanting to drop our bags off more than anything, not expecting the room to be ready at all at that time. The lady of reception was very welcoming and friendly, she told...

We had our wedding at the Principal Edinburgh and what a fantastic wedding it was. Our wedding planner Oskar was brilliant. He was professional and nothing was too much to ask. Every member of staff we dealt with were so helpful and went above and beyond expectations. Everything ran smoothly. We had quite a few dietary requirements and every single...

This was our first time at The Principal and it most definitely won't be our last. The hotel is amazing. The reception staff are so friendly and welcoming, especially Monika, who helped with various requests from us. The Concierge was very obliging and knowledgeable about Edinburgh. We stayed in a Signature Suite which was decorated and presented to a very...

We used to stay in the George Hotel quite often in the 1990s and when I read that it had been refurbished and renamed the Principal it seemed the obvious place to go to celebrate my husbands 70th birthday. We have just returned from his truly lovely celebratory weekend. Sadly I wasn't feeling too well whilst we were away which...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
