Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, InterContinental Edinburgh the George is lauded for its excellent location, allowing guests easy access to nearby attractions. While the hotel's cleanliness and amenities typically receive positive remarks, some guests suggest there's room for improvement in housekeeping and breakfast service.
The ambiance of the hotel earns praise for its luxurious feel, yet opinions are mixed regarding room quality and value for money, with several travelers finding the rooms not up to par with the hotel's premium pricing. Despite its central location, noise is usually not a concern, although isolated incidents have been mentioned.

We spent a lovely 24 hours in The George the day after Hogmanay. I’m always a bit suspect of value for money in UK hotels compared to some of their rivals in Asia and the Middle East but I have to confess I was really impressed with what Intercontinental Edinburgh The George offered.
We were upgraded to a beautiful suite overlooking George Street, it had furniture and fittings that matched the period features of the building and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast in the main restaurant was plentiful although if peace and tranquility is what you prefer then the Club Lounge is probably a better bet. The Lounge was excellent including offering champagne as one of its Happy Hour beverages which was a very pleasant surprise!
If I had to highlight some negatives then I would say parking could be a bit problematic, and it is possible to spend a lot of money on a room although we were able to avail ourselves of a very reasonable rate using IHG points.
The location is superb for those exploring Edinburgh and for us the Club Lounge was a real bonus feature and not something always present in UK hotel chains.
Alfonso navigated us through the check-in process efficiently, and whilst all the staff were polite and helpful, Jasmin and Niki in the Club Lounge helped make our brief stay that bit more special. The next time we need a hotel in Edinburgh we will be sure to strongly consider The George.

Our flight from Boston got us to the hotel at 8AM and we knew we couldn't check in, but Antonio's (more about staff later, b warm welcome proved to be the first of one positive experience after another during our 3 nights and one more returning from Mull!) He arranged to store bags and call when the room was ready. Then looking for a place to sit down—the lobby is lovely and in the original Georgian part, but my husband wanted to close his eyes—Dora let us into the empty library. He dozed and I took a walk. The location was perfect and we enjoyed getting to know George Street and all the ones off it. Returning at 4, (though the call came much sooner) our room had mistakenly been booked as a handicapped one (note if you need this, they are large and well equipped). We were moved to another large one with a view of the Firth, seating area and the huge bathroom with tub and shower, two sinks was so gorgeous I wished I had space in my home to duplicate it. High quality bedding in comfy bed, and just the kind of room you want to come back to after a day of much walking, which we do. It and the entire hotel was spotless. The breakfast in what was some sort of banquet hall offered delicious fresh food in abundance. Besides the buffet, you could order an omelette of any kind, kinds of eggs benedicts, pancakes, porridge and more cooked immediately. There were too many names to note and I've sadly forgotten some, but Christine, Rebecca, Thomas, Gavin, Frank, Ahmed, are a few. It sounds trite, but we really did feel part of the George family as we were there for all those days! We went off the beaten track in the city-yes went to the Catle and Holyrood-but also visited the striking parliament building and stayed to listen to a fascinating session about a report on increasing elected gender and other diversity representation plus coping with social media toxicity and bullying. Oh would that happen in Congress. A pipe dream. So, we will definitely return to Edinburgh and the George. We hadn't been in the city for many many years. Many thanks to all!!

Just stayed at the InterContinental Edinburgh The George and had a fantastic stay. My room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. Despite being an older building my room was very well maintained and contemporary and also very quiet. The hotel itself is gorgeous with a lovely bar and lounge and breakfast this morning was superb. It’s perfectly located to see all the sights in Edinburgh. The best thing about the hotel though is the team. George who checked me in was friendly and charismatic and made me feel very welcome. Rhiannon who checked me out was excellent and very helpful and professional. Every team member made me feel a valued guest and delivered outstanding customer service. I can’t wait to come back!

We have selected InterContinental Edinburgh Hotel based on other guests positive comments , location , availability and reputation of it . We reached the hotel from Glasgow via Tax which costed us £ 135 ( from city centre to city centre) . The hotel location was great and it's walking distance to many major sights, Prince famous and busy street , museums , restaurants, cafe's and other shopping areas. This time of the year looks very busy time in Edinburgh. The check-in process at the beginning was easy and smooth. The staff are generally friendly and supportive. We got at the beginning Double Classic rooms which are approx 16 m² size. The room size is reasonable with small bathroom were there is a one step higher than room floor . Need to be careful. As there is a small window with building views, the room lighting is not enough and you feel a little bit dark . There is small tea table, iron, good WiFi , slippers, tea , coffee and bottle of water ( next day needs to request it as the room service does not keep) .
The instance or action which annoyed us that , we found a big spider in the second room ( for my daughters) at the time we just entered it ( could be because the room service left the window open ) . We reported immediately. The beginning we felt that the receptionist didn't talk it seriously . At the end they gave us a room which is smaller than the one we left approx. 12m² . The next day we once went to them as the bed is small for my two daughters, we asked to change the room. Even there's an empty room near us , we got far room at the other building!!!!. We did not like but we had to accept it.
We have not tried the breakfast which I believe costs £ 28 . The check-out process was OK even the receptionist didn't charge my credit card pre_authorized payment till later I have reminded her .
General speaking, if that action didn't happen, it would be nice and good stay at this Hotel. Thank you in general for your hospitality. We still may stay next time when there is a Chance.

There’s a lot to like about the hotel but some details were lacking. We wouldn’t go back. Firstly, the positives: * The location is fabulous. Right in the heart of Old Town on a beautiful street. * The hotel looks fantastic; it’s a really elegant building inside and out. The lobby and exterior of the building were decorated very tastefully for Christmas. * The room looked very nice. * The staff were second to none; all very helpful, professional and friendly.
Now for the not so good:
* There’s a real lack of storage space in the bathroom. This might seem like a minor issue but it was a significant annoyance. There was a single, very small shelf above the sink which was too small to hold anything other than toothbrushes. The shower itself was bizarrely long. Could be much better configured. * The light in the hall was so bright and it was on all night. I’ve never really thought about this before but presumably most hotels have communal lights on sensors to avoid this issue. The light came flooding into the room under the door all night making it difficult to sleep. After the first night we laid cushions on the floor which improved the situation but light still came in along the vertical cracks in the door. In any event I don’t think you should have to lay cushions on the floor in a £400 a night hotel. * The food in the restaurant was average. A real letdown, but not as bad as the £165 per person Christmas lunch. Firstly the facilities were average. The brochure shows quite elegant gold chairs for example. The realty was rather tatty corporate meeting furniture. Very inelegant. The food was such a letdown. The pate resembled standard shop bought fare and was accompanied by a single measly, very small piece of toast. Thankfully there was some table bread so we could eat the remainder of the pate, but the quality of the bread was questionable; standard shop bought white roll. The beef was tasty enough, the potatoes were very tasty but the veg was bitter and under-seasoned. Worst of all it was lukewarm at best. The gravy in particular was quite cold. Post-food coffee wasn’t served at the table, it was a help yourself situation in a room just off the lobby, which was a bit busy with families watching Christmas films. Not even a measly after dinner mint on offer. We eat out quite a lot on Christmas Day and this was probably the worst experience we’ve had.
All in all the whole experience was quite meh. I’m not one to leave negative reviews but having spent around £1500 on a Christmas break we expected more.

Dear P8420ZOjoshg, Thank you for choosing to spend your Christmas break with us and for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We greatly appreciate your kind words about our location, the elegance of our building, festive décor, the appearance of your room, and, most importantly, the professionalism and friendliness of our team. It means a lot to us that these aspects of your stay left a positive impression. That said, I am truly sorry that certain aspects of your experience fell short of your expectations. Your comments regarding the bathroom storage, hallway lighting, and dining experience are invaluable in helping us identify areas for improvement. Regarding the bathroom setup, we understand how important practical storage is for a comfortable stay, and we will take your feedback into consideration during future renovations. Similarly, the hallway lighting and its impact on your rest is something we will review to see if sensor-based or dimmer solutions could better meet our guests' needs. I am particularly disappointed to hear about your dining experience, especially as we aim to make special occasions like Christmas memorable for all the right reasons. Please accept my sincerest apologies for the shortcomings in both food quality and presentation, as well as the overall setup of the event. I have shared your detailed observations with our kitchen and event teams to ensure that we address these issues and refine our offerings. I understand your disappointment and that, on this occasion, we did not meet the high expectations we set for ourselves, particularly given the significant investment you made in your stay. Please know that your feedback has been taken to heart, and we are committed to learning from it to improve the experience for all our guests. Should you decide to give us another opportunity in the future, I would be delighted to personally oversee your stay and ensure that it exceeds your expectations. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to reach out to me directly at tomas.kalnutis@ihg.com Warm regards, Tomas Kalnutis Duty Manager

This hotel made a great home base for our 4 day stay in Edinburgh, close to everything but just far enough away from the craziness of Princess St.
Walking in off the street, one is greeted by a beautiful classically designed lobby and lots of friendly, welcoming faces. The friendliness continued all through our stay, particularly as some people got to know us. Monika, at the front of house, was particularly helpful and accommodating, at times personally showing us thru the hotel's confounding maze of hallways to our destination. Our flight made us arrive hours before our room would be ready, but she and her bell person, Ross, made sure that we were well taken care of as we waited.
The room was roomy and very well-outfitted with Nespresso, complementary drinks in the fridge, and lots of outlets! A wonky teakettle was quickly replaced including a small box of fudge for our inconvenience. Our only comment is that it was never clear what was supposed to be included in the fridge. In addition to a variety of soft drinks, some days there would be alcoholic drink or two, some days not. Not a big deal.
Breakfast was on the expensive side, but it was so complete, varied, and tasty (try the eggs royale) that it allowed us to start the day with a big meal and skip a full lunch.
This is definitely a come back to place for us.

I stayed at George from 27 till 30 December at King Premium room with expectations to have a luxurious stay ahead of New Year. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The room which costs GBP400 per night appeared to be pretty basic, small and tired, with old cheap furniture and marks on the walls. Bathroom was also tiny and without a towel dryer. The hotel policy with regards to the heating is also pretty surprising. In the first morning I left the digital room key in the key holder to keep the heating running. When I returned to the room later in the evening, it appeared that housekeepers took the key with them and the temperature in the room dropped to 17 degrees. The situation repeated the next day when I returned in the evening in the cold room. I had to call the reception for some explanations and received a rather surprising response that the hotel operates an environmental policy and doesn't run the heating when the guests are not inside the room. Well, when you return in a cold hotel room in winter that's something you might expect from a cheap hotel next to the train station, but not from a 4-star hotel. The breakfast was pretty disappointing, with a poor selection of items and cheap quality of stuff like cheese, ham and fruits. The absence of freshly squeezed orange juice was particularly surprising for a hotel of such level and for the breakfast price of GBP30 per person. All in all, I had a pretty mediocre experience for the money I paid and sadly, unlikely I will be staying in this hotel again.

A recent 2 night say at the Intercontinental Edinburgh was one of the nicest stays this year in the UK. We arrived around 10.30 and was greeted by Antonio the FOH supervisor who was exceptionally helpful and friendly. He informed us that we had a nice upgrade, but the room was not ready but instead of having to ask for a holding room, Antonio offered this straight away. A first for me as I can’t remember the last time this happened, and I’ve been a RA for 14 years and a IHG member for 17 years.
The holding room was a basic room but as my wife needed to work it was very welcome. I however went to the gym which is a little tricky to find depending which side of the hotel you are staying in as you have to go to certain floors and then get a lift to the basement but you are going to the gym so you can’t really complain about the distance. The gym is small but well equipped with the exception of free weights which stop at 10Kg a personal preference, there are plenty of water and towels for your workout.
The room was ready around 1.30pm so we moved over to our new room. This was a small suite with a lounge area, and comfy sofa. When we arrived there was a bottle of champagne and a cocktail mix waiting in the room which was not expected but so very welcome as there is no club lounge yet but its due to open immanently.
What I liked about the room was the high windows which gave a lot of privacy as we were facing onto the many street and a previous visit we had a suite with big windows that I found quite noisy as the hotel is opposite a club and a few bars which close at 3am so light sleepers might request a different room. I did hear the noise in this room, but it was not something that woke me
Despite the small, high window the room was still very light, and the natural light was very good. The bathroom had both shower and bathtub which was very large and as I’m 6’3’ was till able to relax in the tub very easily. A well-designed space which one small drawback is the step into the bathroom that caught me out a few times but nothing to do with the complimentary champagne 😊
We did spend some time in the room, and it was very nice to sit and have a drink on the sofa and there’s a big TV on the wall should you wish to watch TV.
The breakfast is very good but it’s very busy and we did have to wait to get a table. The first morning it took around 20 mins to get the hot breakfast and the bacon was inedible but there were fresh rashers on the counter. Also, the tatty scone was rock hard. Om the second day the haggis, sausage and beans were missing but juts aske and it was brough out. Things like this don’t spoil my stay but the attention to detail was not there and at Over £300+ this should really be better.
all in all, we very much enjoyed the stay and Antonio was so very charming and engaging every time we saw him, he asked how we were and how the stay was. I now look to book a stay in early sept for around 4 days to enjoy the hotel a lot more.

First of all and without hesitation, every single member of the reception/foyer team are excellent.
Regrettably, that’s where my enthusiasm ends.
I was put in a room where it was known the heating wasn’t working. The maintenance man looked surprised to see me when he arrived an hour or so after I checked in. He said he would speak to reception to get me moved. That took over an hour to arrange, including me calling them after half an hour to see what was happening.
The heating was fine in the new room, but when at bedtime after 5 minutes there was still no hot water in the bathroom, I had to call reception again. They said they’d report it to maintenance, but that I should keep the water running. Fortunately after a few more minutes the water did start to heat up and eventually was where you’d expect it to be. It was a similar situation in the morning too.
The breakfast offer was average for any hotel, therefore distinctly underwhelming for an Intercontinental. In particular, I’ve never seen such an unappetising bowl of pork sausages - pale, greasy and all stuck together. And it was only when I overheard another waiter telling other guests that you could order other things and would need to request fried eggs, that I realised the manager who had sat me hadn’t given me all the information. And I dislike having to request fried eggs, as it slows up the whole breakfast experience. I’ve recently been at Crowne Plazas and Holiday Inns where they are a standard item on the buffet.
All in all the great staff at this hotel are let down by everything else. The management need to start to focus on the “hard product” with does not justify the premium room rates.

The service at the hotel was very good in all areas. We had a room with city view which was very clean, nicely decorated and spacious. The beds were very comfortable. The only drawback was the bathroom. Unfortunately, this could not be heated separately, so it was quite cool in the morning if you did not want to leave the door up all night. Of course, it also applied to the cold floor tiles. Larger and more stable people than me (1.76cm) should have quite a problem showering due to the small shower room. The supply of hot drinks in the room was absolutely sufficient. There was tea, cocoa, coffee (Nespresso) etc. The minibar was stocked with free drinks. Otherwise, everything else was great. WiFi is absolutely sufficient and stable. Breakfast is generally good and rich, but there is still room for improvement here when compared to hotels in other chains. But what bothered us most was that the concierge of the restaurant didn't seem to care how his guests appear at breakfast. For us it is a NoGo, coming out of the gym sweaty in sports clothes incl. short pants to take his breakfast. In general, I think that in a hotel that claims 4-5-stars, the clothes should be appropriate to the hotel and the season. Wearing flip-flops and shorts for breakfast in winter does not have to be. The location is excellent. I can't get any better. One is in 3 minutes walk in the St. James Quarter or on Princes Street, in 10 minutes on the Royal Mile etc. There are all kinds of restaurants also within walking distance. Also the bus stop for the Airlink Express to the airport is just 5 minutes away. Tip: If you take the Airlink Express 100 to the city centre from the airport, you can book the return journey directly. It's much cheaper.

Hi - we had a suite when we stayed at the hotel and it looked like all of the suites faced onto George Street. They were all along one corridor facing onto George Street.
The reception at the hotel is very helpful and friendly is you call them I’m sure they’ll put your mind at rest
The hotel is lovely and well situated. Free breakfast is included. The breakfast selection was excellent.
