This hotel is located a short 15 minutes from the Edinburgh Airport. Although it is listed as a Marriott Hotel, it is not nearly up to the expected standards. It is vastly overpriced, with poor facilities. My room was not ready until about 3:30 pm. There is no air conditioning, and the central air duct provides only intermittent fan operations. Upon my request a small portable fan was brought to my room. There was no bottled water in the room, and the bathtub didn't work. Only the shower worked. Marriott downplays the lack of air conditioning to try to maintain their occupancy levels. The reception staff were as helpful as possible with the other hotel operations limiting their ability to provide good service.
This hotel is not up to Marriott standards. AC is broken, rooms are sub par, and front staff is not always available. The line was 5 people deep to complain. I was not even aloud to request a taxi, I had to wait until a person could help. Only standout was breakfast, it was very good!
We stayed at this hotel for a night because it was closer to the airport and we had an early morning flight. I will not repeat content from other negative reviews; they are all true. I cannot believe that someone rated this place as good or anything Marriott standard (unless Marriott lowered their bar by 90%) Apart from needing a major remodel, the staff knows that the air conditioning is not working. The AC was not even powered on. They are happy to supply the fans in the room even though air conditioners are installed in every room. It may not be an issue if the weather is not warm, but it is an issue if the weather is hot. They want you to open the window and are happy to supply a fan. When I asked the reception, they were willing to look at it the next day, without mentioning that ACs are not working in their hotel. They have a certain number of window ACs, but another guest took all. When I pressed them hard that it did not look like ACs were even powered on, they accepted that most ACs are not working, and they do not advertise these as air-conditioned rooms (WTF). They asked me to talk to the manager in the morning to get a discount on booking due to non-working AC, which I did not do. Unfortunately, I did not check the review before booking, assuming this is a Marriott hotel and they are following their standards. It is pretty clear reading other negative reviews that they do not care, and so is Marriott. I have stayed in better motels than this 4-star hotel. Hotel Managers - do not ask me to contact you. You cannot fix this by giving me a discount. I needed to sleep that night before the long flight back to the US. Instead of responding, work on fixing the hotel. There is a reason you carry a ton of fans and window units. This is not the solution. Train your staff to be transparent.…
Disappointing service. Have stayed in other Marriott Hotels which were delightful. Spent first night ringing reception, room service, housekeeping but no reply. Sent a message down to reception through grandson to make the sofa bed but no action. Then at midnight the sofa bed was attended to. Dinner was OK not the best but the ice cream sundae was a disaster. It was ice cream and lots of cream pushed into a glass jar. Picture attached!!! Santosh the manager said he will redo mine- slightly better but still such poor presentation- nothing like the picture of the sundae you see around in the hotel. Information given out at the bar seems inaccurate. First night 8th Aug tried to get some food but was told they closed at 10.30pm. OK our fault so got some food at the shell garage opposite. Tonight arrived just before 10pm but was told that chefs have left and there is no food. Spoke to Santosh the manger who then said the gas was not working so they had to stop food production. At this point I was not interested- just wanted to pay for drinks and go to the room. A lady approached me working at the bar said if you are coming tomorrow.come early!!! Excuse me- what time do you close!!! Room service was no service at all. I was told to order online with just eats or deliveroo and they will bring it up to the room! You just cannot make this up!…
I had major issues before I even arrived with my booking being cancelled for no reason, after lots of phone calls this was finally sorted. I had high hopes with it being a Marriott but I was disappointed. The carpets on our floor hadn’t been hoovered and the corridors were full of rubbish and left over glasses from room service the night before. The shower pressure in my brother’s room was non existent and my room had some added hairs in the shower that were clearly not mine! We were given free breakfast to compensate for the earlier check in issues but it was mediocre at best, I am pleased we didn’t pay for it. I don’t usually leave negative reviews and the hotel is very handy for the tram but it needs a lot of investment and some decent housekeeping as a minimum.
Stayed here for a while as we were working in the area, the location was obviously out of the way of any places to eat, with not much else nearby. But it served our needs well, the place is very large and a bit ominous from the outside. Breakfast was always pretty good and although it could do with another coffee machine, was great with a very good selection of various choices. On level 1 by the lift there was an ice machine which was a very welcome addition. Overall a very good stay.
I’m reading these bad reviews and yes a couple of hitches expected but we had a fabulous experience at this Marriott. Super friendly staff. Barbara, Kye, Emma, Sam, Marta and so so many other super friendly and accommodating staff. King bed was great, we had a fridge in the room for leftovers or food bought. The a/c didn’t work first night but we opened the window and used the fan in the room. The next day it was fixed and worked great the rest of the trip. They serviced our room daily. The hot tub was the best. After walking all day a good soak did the trick. The restaurant was good but you had to know what to get lol. Moscow mules there were so refreshing and went down too easily lol The weather was absolutely perfect and the patio was very comfortable. If it’s cool, layer. It’s was sunny and I wore short sleeves and sandals. Always had a hoodie tied around waist for the cool times of the day We took an Uber to town had zero problems. Honestly I haven’t had such friendly staff at a hotel and I’ve been all over! Made friends with them and cried when we left. What a lot of people do not understand is you get back what you put in. If you are super nice and friendly you get that in return. If you are super picky and expect to be pampered and you are not friendly then go to the Balmoral! We had the best experience at the Marriott and will return in the future. I miss them already and they teared up too when we left! I love making new friends wherever I go! I can’t wait to go back! May 25-June 8th stay.…
Overall, the hotel is OK. Not the top of what Marriott has to offer, but up to what one would expect, especially given its age. At the rate I booked it, I was satisfied. What I really hated was the fact, that if you wish to have food there, either you go there in July/August (I was there in June) or you freeze. With all doors left open, the bar area was cooled down to the outside temperature (11 degrees centigrade) and the restaurant also was beyond chilly. The only explanation I have for people leaving both the front door and the one to the garden open is that they expect their guest to have a strong penchant for all things arctic - or they do not care. As I chose the hotel, amongst others, for having a restaurant so that in between busy times I can just relax where I am, I was not happy to have to brave the elements in order to get to another place where I would not have to shiver. It was pouring, but I hate feeling miserable while eating, so I went to a place which was supposed to be in the "immediate neighbourhood". Believe me, when it pours and blows in Scotland, 1,2 miles do not feel like neighbourhood at all. On the upside, they have a nice gym, and apart from deep-freezing us, staff is friendly and helpful.…
I hate leaving bad reviews but this is one of the worst hotels stays I’ve had. My hotel reviews lean mostly on sleep quality. After sleeping in the beds at Edinburgh Marriott, I feel as if I was beaten. My back is killing. Worst hotel beds I’ve ever experienced. They were rock hard (not firm) but as if sleeping on concrete. They were lumping which is odd since it was like sleeping on concrete. And they were too large for the base, hanging down around the frame. The rooms were equipped with “AC”. The controls say you can only lower to 20C or 70F. Do not believe it ever achieved this temp. The room was so hot. Not one of the 4 of our group slept with blankets. My son was a sweaty mess. Windows only crack open, not enough to pull in a breeze. On the positive, the children enjoyed the swimming pool area. The reception was nice. The rooms were clean if out-dated.…
The receptionist was lovely and patient despite being only one of two on duty and dealing professionally with the queues at reception during the busy jubilee weekend celebrations. When I booked several months ago there was no bed and breakfast deal on offer so each day my partner and I paid the £13 each daily breakfast rate as recommended by the receptionist. Now I have to mention where the Marriott has really deteriorated in terms of service and sadly it is breakfast service. Some waiting staff were working hard but some others were just idly standing by at the corner of the dining room having a chat despite several tables needing cleared and cleaned. These waiters were oblivious to guests requiring a clean table to sit at as they were busy gossiping. I had to ask a member of staff to clear a table for us to sit at and noticed other guests doing likewise. The next observation was the quality of the ingredients served at the cooked breakfast section that has gone downhill since my last visit. The sausages and bacon were not nice and the black pudding and hash browns were not nice. I had ordered poached eggs and the waiter could not remember which table we were at and I had to leave the table and intercept him before he returned to the kitchen with our order. There is only one toaster in the dining room and the queues to use it were long. Pre-covid the hotel offered Tiptree individual jams in little jars and now it was another queue to help yourself to the open jars of jams next to the pastries and the muffins were still frozen in the centre after using the toaster. The open jars were really not a hygienic way to offer jams either. On the plus side the fruit salads and cut fruits such as pineapple and watermelon were good along with the yoghurt and cereals selection. The croissants were tasty but the cheap square loaf near the toaster was not (that is if you could get near the toaster) The dining room at breakfast was very busy but there appeared to be groups of waiters either overworked and others just loitering around doing very little by comparison so it was a bit shambolic. Our bedroom was comfortable and spacious but on one particular day it was after 4pm in the afternoon before it was serviced. The free wifi was very good. The bathroom toiletries were not replenished regularly during our stay with just one of everything despite us being a couple. The final straw was on our last night with us being in bed after 22:00 hours and our bedroom door being opened which gave us cause for alarm. I went to the door and there was a member of staff at our door with a master key and I asked him what he was doing as he had disturbed us which was a cause for concern. He was very apologetic and explained that he was told our room was empty! What on Earth he was doing at that time of night is beyond comprehension. Finally on the third party booking sites it appears that car parking is FREE. It is NOT FREE of charge and you must pay £5 per night. On the plus side the hotel has a bus stop outside the property with regular bus services to the city centre. I’m afraid a lot of improvement needs to be done rapidly in some areas of staff service as this stay was not up to the usual standards experienced previously.…
