Just back from an overnight stay, first impressions were good, but that was it. Rooms, extremely warm, no air con and a small fan hidden in a wardrobe, no point in opening the windows as you get deafened by the air con fans from all the surrounding shops. Bathroom, very basic with a shower mixer from the 1970's. Dining room...

Stayed here for 1 night. Room was spacious enough, although was quite warm and leaving windows open resulted in quite a bit of street noise. Bathroom was ok, although could do with some updating. All clean and tidy. Room was in good location, with views over to the Castle. Wifi worked well. There was a safe in the room for...

After a week at the wonderful Imperial Apartment in North Berwick, the Tattoo and a dozen odd shows at the fringe, train trip including steam up the west coast we arrived at the Mecure for the last night of our holiday and the fringe. We were hoping to get views of the fireworks from the bar during the evening. However...

The staff are brilliant - very professional - 100%. The hotel location is superb. However, the rooms and fabric of the hotel are now seriously dated. The room was far too hot - no temperature control and impossible to open a window as it's far too noisy being on Princes street. Result = *I got no sleep* So not staying...

Location, location and the beautiful view from the hotel restaurant gives 2 stars to the Mercure Princes Street. Otherweise I can't say many positive words about the hotel. My little and terribly expensive room was warm as sauna 23.-28.8. Although I love a proper sauna, it was unhealthy to stay in a dusty hotelroom warm like that.

First the positives. Hotel is in a fantastic location with an absolutely stunning view. The negatives. The rooms and decor are looking dated and tired and could do with a fresh look and better room layout. There was only two power points in the room, so pack an extension bar that has USB slots as you will struggle to charge...

Good location as it's 5 mins walk away from Waverley. Rooms were small but adequate for a couple of night stay. The hotel could have done with a refresh of decor around, some more plug sockets and needed some air con installed as the room were really warm and outside was noisy when you open the windows. Fortunately there's a...

This hotel is perfectly situated for exploring Edinburgh. OK it's a bit noisy at night but so are most city centre hotels. The room was large and clean with a large wide screen TV and a kettle and tea/coffee were supplied. The bed was comfortable but it wasn't a double, it was two singles put together as tends to be...

First off, staff were very friendly! Upon arrival we were exhausted (red-eye flight) and the airline had lost my luggage, so we weren't "happy campers". They greeted us with sympathy and drew out a map to the pharmacy, clothing stores, etc. to help us out (as well as hold my husband's luggage in the meantime). The room was great, we...

Booked this property, originally, back in March. Understanding that the Tatttoo and the Fringe were on, the price seemed steep, but almost understandable at 265 GBP per night. Didn't think much about it, but prior to leaving for our trip (actually before heading to the airport, I double checked) and the rate had dropped 143 GBP per night! Seriously! For...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
