It's the old Mount Royal Hotel and right on Princes Street so handy for everywhere, including Waverley Station. Rooms spacious - we booked a Castle View room which was larger than those at the back and had a comfortable sofa rather than 2 hard chairs. No air con but the windows do open and there is not much noise after...

The Mercure is in an excellent location on Princes Street for a friend and I to meet, travelling to the city by bus and train. The coffee lounge, overlooking the gardens, is large with plenty of space between tables - so far, so good. We entered at 10.40am with customers already there - but the place was still being vacuumed!...

When booking through our business travel manager I asked for a hotel near to our Edinburgh office in Princes St. This hotel was chosen for me and was perfect. Easy access to the station and trams on only 2 minutes from the gardens. The food in the evening was excellent I stuck to the fixed menu and for £15 (you...

My wife and I have just returned from a two night stay at this hotel. The location in the middle of Princes street can’t really be beaten. It’s ideal for transport links as well as having the beautiful gardens in front of it. Whilst we didn’t get an upgraded room, the one we had was fine for what we needed....

Stayed at the hotel for a business trip, the location is superb right on Princes Street. The only issue is the hotel is a bit tired in places, I stayed on the 5th floor with a really good large room. The biggest issue is no air conditioning, the bedroom was really hot, they had put a fan in the room...

We attended the end of festival fireworks dinner which cost around £50 per head. We felt under pressure to order quickly from the short menu - the food came immediately. We weren't given the option to see a wine list or buy drinks until we asked. The staff were literally running around and with their shoes banging on the floor...

The best thing about this hotel has got to be its location. PERFECT! We went to Edinburgh for the Fringe festival and it seemed to be only a 10 minute walk everywhere. From the bar you can also see the Assembly Hall building (where some of the fringe events took place), the national galleries, Princes garden (where they held fireworks...

I stayed here for a couple of nights midweek. The hotel is very tired - no air con, small rooms, old pipes around the building which generate a lot of heat, windows that hardly open. Breakfast (which I only had on one of the days) was late starting leading to queues and initially only one person to show people to...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
