Although this hotel is situated in an excellent position right on Princess Street, its shabby and dated interior left me very disappointed. The room was adequate but could have done with a through deep clean, along with the bathroom floor. The paintwork on the bathroom door was extremely dirty and the dust along the television unit indicated that it was...

The hotel is a bit dated/tired, it is in need of a refurbishment, however the location on Princess Street was excellent. The breakfast was very good and the staff were pleasant, bar prices were quite high.

Taxis cannot stop in front of the hotel for drop off. So have to take a short walk to the entrance. Location is good for the price point. Walking distance to the train station to London (6mins) and to the Royal Mile. Hotel a bit tired but clean. Stayed there for 4 nights. Breakfast was the same every morning. Haggis...

From an unprepossessing entrance beside Marks and Spencers (or Markies as the locals call it), the Mercure is a superb location for exploring all Edinburgh has to offer. My room had a view over Princes Street Garden Christmas Market and could see all the action (and hear it, though it stopped about 10 pm). Super buffet breakfast, lovely staff and...

Six females away for a girly weekend, hotel was in great position, easy access to transport, shops pubs and restaurants on the doorstep. Christmas Market is opposite the hotel, we visited the Market on a Friday, glad we did the view from the hotel showed it was extremely busy on Saturday, Sunday was not too busy. The hotel staff were...

Great location for shopping and dining. Good service and room tidied up every day. Average breakfast and the entire hotel need of maintenance, especially the bedrooms. Terrible holiday decorations in the restaurant.

I have stayed in this hotel on a number of occasions over the past couple of years. It is always clean and comfortable but on my last visit, 2 weeks ago I noticed some of the furnishings were looking a little tired, especially the chairs and carpet in the bar area and the chairs in the bedroom were worn. The...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
