We loved the charm of this hotel. The hotel brasserie restaurant was excellent, especially for dinner; excellent food and dining experience from the staff. Would go back to the restaurant even if I did not stay in the hotel. Breakfast was good too. A little pricey. Actually, really enjoyed all our restaurant choices around Edinburgh. The hotel staff was courtesy...

I wouldn't quite call it a 5-star hotel, but we enjoyed ourselves at The Scotsman recently, with the exception of the issues mentioned below. The location, in the heart of Old Town, was a priority for our first trip to Edinburgh. Located next to Waverly Station, about halfway between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood, this hotel is the PERFECT launching point...

Lovely to get an upgrade to a suite with views over the wonderful Edinburgh sky line shame that the room needs some talc. Wrinkle in bedroom carpet and varnish round windows needs attention. Bed comfortable and a good nights sleep. Big disappointment was no comfortable place to enjoy a night cap in fact made unwelcome in the bleak restaurant/bar! Hotel...

The Scotsman Hotel is at best a three perhaps four star hotel masquerading as a five star hotel. We say this based on our experiences as follows: They could not get us a working room key for 36 hours. In fact on our second night (in our second room) at 10:45 pm someone (likely the porter who obviously has a...

I stayed in tha hotel for 2 nights. I just search hotel near Edinburg station, so I pick this one. Damn! The room is dark and facilities looks old. The worst is the toilet. We called the maintenance guy to fix it due to terrible noise after flush, however the noise keeps on and the staff said ask us to...

Stayed two nights over the referendum vote. Very convenient location. Room long and narrow, spacious bathroom with large bath but not a great shower over the bath. Service was very efficient and friendly. Good free wi-fi. Nice breakfast. Arm of chair in dining room was loose. Dining room had a wine display cabinet covering the central wall, but empty of...

It's up to you to find out!!!!!!!! At the end of...

Stayed here on a business trip, the second time I've stayed at the Scotsman. First time we scored an upgrade to a Suite. This time not so lucky. But still a reasonable room, plenty of space. The room was at the front of the hotel, so a little noisy late at night with revellers passing by. But otherwise it was...

Went to Edinburgh for a night to spend with family, decided to pay that bit extra for a treat, was let down with the swimming pool very small, also there was no front desk just a few tables pushed together and when I asked them if they'd recommend anywhere for a 15year old they said we be no idea, not...

We were given a room with a very wet carpet so were upgraded, which was most acceptable! Room was very clean. A magnifying mirror in the bathroom would have been a welcome addition. The staff, especially reception & concierge were most professional and helpful. Not keen on the restaurant/bar as it didn't seem private enough as it was open to...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
