If you value your belongings, BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT THIS HOTEL. We had over $9000 in valuables stolen directly from our room: a very expensive Breitling watch, high end camera and accessories, iPad, wallet, etc. Likely we will never be reimbursed for our loss, but at the very least we can tell our story. What happened: we went down to the...

We booked 5 rooms for 10 friends to stay to celebrate my 40th birthday. We booked ahead and got a fantastic rate. The hotel is beautiful, very impressive but also homely and welcoming. Rooms all different but great size and facilities. Amazing views over Edinburgh from our room. Breakfast was delicious in impressive surroundings and the spa is stunning. I'd...

Great hotel with large rooms if you want to party till late. Not suitable for families as there is a bar on the ground floor playing music till 3.00am. Very loud. Rooms getting dated. Staff very nice and helpful Try somewhere else for a family visit.

My mother and I had 3 nights at this hotel during half term. We had a lovely room 504 overlooking Princess Street and the gardens. The room was large, but extremely warm especially at night. We ate in the Brasserie and the menu was fine but the choices didn't vary. Breakfast was a buffet with choices that could be ordered...

Dinner bed and breakfast booked as a package for our anniversary and my husbands belated birthday present turned out to be the best stay here yet. Stayed last year and couldn't fault this 5 star hotel and that's why we decided to return again; it is a hotel with history and lots of character and stories to tell....... on arrival...

The building was The Scotsman Newspaper building and so the history adds to the intrigue of the hotel. However, there were issues. The entry throw rug was tattered on the corner nearest the elevator. The wifi was very difficult to get on. Our poor bellman had to help us. Speaking of bellman, they were very sweet, but one of the...

Lovely hotel & very central location. We really enjoyed our trip & would recommend this hotel to anybody. Close by the buses for the airport & tour buses. Central to lovely restaurants/bars at night and of course the shops :)

Amazing rooms but ask for one high up as the noise at night from all the stag and hen do's can be loud (I am sure all hotels suffer from this). The staff were brilliant. Lovely atmosphere. Only downside and reason for not giving 5 stars is the breakfast was dissappointing. Tasteless eggs benedict one morning, soggy and oily fry...

The hotel occupies the old newspaper headquarters in the centre of Edinburgh. The usual split level architecture of that city.Within walking distance of all the main sites. The conversion gives some odd rooms , our suite was small windowed but full of character and lots of space. There is a Brasserie type restaurant with a good wine list and superb breakfasts including...

Always loved the Scotsman for cocktails and amazing food. Didn't think over 8 years it could get better. But with the arrival of Ruben Casals, the extraordinary cocktail waiter, it certainly has. His knowledge and attention to detail knocked us out! We left feeling a real warmth of wanting to return and longing to see Ruben again and feel comfortable...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
