This was by far the best experience I have ever had in many years of visiting Edinburgh. All of the staff were friendly and helpful beyond the call of duty. The room was excellent. Its central location meant that it was possible to walk to Princes Street yet there was a good bus service for those less active. I would...

A refreshing contrast to modern corporate, anonymous hotels or run-of-the-mill B and Bs. First it’s cheap, but offers a wide range of facilities, for instance not only tea-and coffee-making facilities in each bedroom but also the offer of helping yourself to fresh milk and biscuits from the kitchen whenever you like. Second, it’s run by people with a quiet commitment...

The owners where very nice and friendly. I enjoyed the family style breakfast in rhw morning. It's in a good location. Only a short work to the castle/shops/bars/restaurants. The only small issue I had was that the shutters in the room didn't fully close. This meant that there was a small gap which let light in in the morning. As...

An unusual guesthouse in a lovely, comfortably furnished old house in a bustling area not far from the city centre. Lots of shops, places to eat, theatres and cinemas within walking distance. There is no cooked breakfast but all you can eat is on the communal table. The house is run by a small, very welcoming Christian community but there...

After my partner and I were refused a room for the night at Travelodge at Meuse Lane, Edinburgh EH2 2BY, and then also turned away from One Motel 10-15 Princes St, Edinburgh EH2 2AN, (apparently you need ID before being given a room...we were made to feel like terrorists), we found Emmaus House and were made to feel so very...

Emmaus House is very clean and friendly. I found the parking situation to be a little bit difficult. The staff was very hospitable. I was traveling around Scotland with my son and I would definitely stay here again.

From the moment I arrived I felt welcome and at home. Lovely house, lovely people, great breakfast! If you're looking for balm to the soul in an unfamiliar city, Emmaus House is perfect. The location is near bustling Bruntsfield and handy for the centre of town, but the house itself is quiet with a small garden to the rear. The...

Emmaus House is comfortable welcoming and peaceful. The house and the rooms are lovely Victorian style, very nice, comfortable and clean. The place is only a short footwalk to the centre of Edinburgh. I always felt at home. The hosts are so friendly and helpful that I was sorry to leave them. There is a very nice living-room, where you...

Wonderful hospitality and community. When traveling alone it is important that you can share things - as you can in Emmaus House with the hosts and other guests. Cosy rooms, and a wonderful living room where to sit and read.

Emmaus House is a comfortable, welcoming and peaceful place to stay in the centre of Edinburgh where I always feel at home. The hosts create a wonderful balance of friendship and inclusion but I always feel able to have my own space and privacy. The rooms are warm, simple and comfortable and the food is great too.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
