The Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh garners positive remarks for its central location and stylish atmosphere, making it a hit with sightseers. Guests consistently commend the clean premises and comfortable beds, although the hotel's value for money is often questioned due to overpriced rooms and construction-related disturbances. While the breakfast options are extensive and the staff is lauded for being friendly, some travelers have encountered inconsistent service and noise issues, both from construction and general location-related disturbances.

The room was comfortable and we were grateful for the AC however the lighting was so dim both in the room and bathroom that it made it difficult to do my hair and makeup. Also, there was no mirror over the desk so I had to stretch my hair straightener cord to reach the only other mirror besides the bathroom (you can only plug shavers into the bathroom outlet).

There were no washcloths (facecloths) so I called reception and they said they would bring them to us. After an hour and a not receiving any, we went downstairs and asked for some but were told that they were fully booked and were out of them. I was disappointed that no one bothered to get back to us and honestly if facecloths are in such high demand, why not get more and/or provide them in the rooms. They cannot be that expensive.

Breakfast was good and the omelette station was a nice touch.

We were booked into a triple room for three days in Sept. The hotel has a good location, near the Royal Mile and also Princes Street. The beds are small but comfortable and the hotel room was too hot . The windows were fixed with a permanent vent at the top which made it very noisy specially when there is a building site next door and the train station to the front. It was like sleeping in the street!

The bathroom is modern with a nice large shower with both rainfall option and a smaller handheld version if you did not want to get your hair wet. Not enough towels.

They have a TV and also a free safe along with water, tea & coffee facilities in the room. They also provide an ironing board and iron.

If you don’t want to include breakfast on your booking you can also purchase a voucher at reception for €15. Breakfast was excellent; from healthy options to hot dishes, sweet and savoury. There is also a chef onsite to cook the omelette to your taste.

Bar and front staff were very pleasant.

Let’s start with positives. The hotel is within easy walking distance from Waverley station. This can be a disadvantage as there was some engineering work at night.
We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco.
Our room was perfectly clean and well equipped, but with the most boring pictures in the universe. Imagine a set of prints showing what appeared to be a dismantled cardboard carton from different angles. Not suggesting Monarch of the Glen ,but surely it wouldn’t be hard to find some tasteful prints reflecting where we were? The bed was large and very comfy. A nice touch was a notice in the bathroom with a list of items available from reception should you have forgotten anything.
We decided to dine in on the first night, big mistake. Firstly there was a long wait, an hour, before we got our starters.
We had just tucked in when a waitress brought our main courses. I explained we had only just received our starters. She basically shrugged her shoulders and said there was a mix up and our main courses were ready. I asked her to take them back to the kitchen to keep warm. The tables were marble topped and the food would have cooled rapidly.
The main courses were served again.
I looked at my aubergine Thai curry which consisted of a vast amount of baby sweet corn, but no aubergine! I asked a waiter about it, he returned it to the kitchen and reported that the chef agreed it contained no aubergine, but that the chef would cook some, but there would be a wait. Eventually after my husband had finished his meal mine arrived complete with aubergine, but no sweet corn in sight. Bizarre. We didn’t order wine; Oyster Bay at £80 a bottle is a ludicrous mark up! Unasked for the waiter reduced our bill by 10%.
Undeterred we went for breakfast the next morning. Hard to believe it was the same dining room. It was staffed by pleasant, smiling, helpful waiters and waitresses. The selection of hot and cold food was excellent from fresh fruit, cold meats and cheese, cereals, yogurt to a full English/Scottish and freshly made pancakes. Not forgetting the croissants.
I would stay here again, there is a handy, if steep short cut to the Royal Mile, but would avoid dining in next time.

Leonardo Royal Hotel

If your thinking of heading to Edinburgh and are looking for a friendly hotel in a great location to all the sites then let me recommend the Leonardo Royal Hotel. The hotel is only a couple of minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley Station.

We arrived on monday afternoon and entered the hotel. At reception we were given a lovely welcome before being given all the information we needed about the hotel. Our room was an Executive Double plus single room on the sixth floor and was kept clean and stocked by the friendly hotel cleaners. This gave us great views overlooking Waverley station as well as princess street.

Unfortunately we only used the hotel for breakfast which had everything you could wish for (ie. Tea and Coffee , juices , cereal , meats , cakes , pastries and all the ingredients you need to create your own style of a full english breakfast including haggis.) You will also be made very welcome by every member of staff who are all so friendly and can also offer any advice required for your visit to this wonderful city.

As I said the hotel is in a fabulous location and between 10 - 15 minutes walk from most of the landmarks including Edinburgh Castle , Calton Hill , Royal Mile , Princess Street Scottish Parliament Building and the National Museum of Scotland. Buses and trams are also close by meaning you can also visit the lovely town of Leith.

This was our first visit to Edinburgh and I’m pretty sure it won’t be our last. I also think that when we do return there’s a strong chance we will once again choose the Leonardo Royal Hotel.

My husband & I stayed for 1 night. Room was ready for us and we arrived early. Room spotless had everything we needed & if we had forgotten anything the hotel offered numerous items we just had to ask
Comfy bed slept like a log.
Excellent choice at breakfast only complaint scrambled eggs were not nice at all. I then opted for an omelette which was freshly cooked and was perfect
Kim ,I think was the ladies name who greeted us as we went in for breakfast, was so lovely took time to greet & speak to every one on arrival
The breakfast staff couldn’t do enough for us
We will certainly be back & would highly recommend this hotel. It’s literally on the doorstep of Waverly station 5 mins walk to Royal Mile
See you next time we are in the capital

The location was ideal as it was right next to the Christmas market HOWEVER if you’re planning on staying here be prepared to get woken up at 7am by work men and more importantly if you’re travelling with an infant avoid at ALL COSTS! I stayed with my three month old baby and upon picking up our bags I wanted to change my child and was told there were no changing facilities and I had to walk to the train station if I wanted to change my child. ( I was told this by the manager and receptionist) there was a disabled toilet/changing room with no where to actually change the baby? The staff weren’t helpful at all. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel at all.

Hummmmm so as you have no doubt read already the hotel is undergoing construction work to half of the hotel.

Once again we were not told of the current work ahead of our stay and sadly our room overlooked this. It has to be said that as a room it was clean, modern and stylish with comfortable beds although we found it very warm on a night and found if we opened the window we were woken by the construction workers who turned up at 6:45 and started work at 7 sharp.

We didn’t try the restaurant so can’t comment on that but reception staff were efficient and friendly.

It’s a great location 2 min walk from the station and ideally located near the royal mile.

The construction work is a consideration if booking but we’re were out all day, back for a shower and back out again so didn’t spoil our visit and would definitely recommend once it’s done and stay again in future.

What an absolute gem Kym at breakfast she was floorless with customer service, tourist info and local knowledge. Her ser ice was impeccable and I hope she reads this as I give her 100%.she ran that breakfast ser ice and the 2 days she had off it was noticed how smooth the place didn't run and your staff member Mei was extremely rude to us. We avoided her from then on. The staff that pick up dirty plates really back off it started to become annoying.
Anastasia at night along with the lovely Sullivan and Josh were your great staff at night.
The housekeepers keep the rooms spotless.
The toilets near the dining room were the dirtiest I have ever seen toilets in my life, I have never ever seen toilets so bad it was disgusting.
The food at night sorry let the whole place down and I'm a chef.
Steak ordered medium rare was cooked
at medium well every night we gave up and went somewhere else. The chicken cooked in Du puy lentils was awful, tortellini amazing and soup of the day outstanding

Unfortunately, our stay at the Leonardo Royal Hotel was marred by constant construction noise, which we were not informed about when booking. Upon arrival, we were given a room that backed directly onto a construction site (see attached photo). When we raised our concerns, the staff moved us to a room on the opposite side, this meant checking out and the new room wasn’t available for 4 hours. When we checked back in the construction noise was still very audible. To make things worse, this room had a very bad smell of drains/sewerage!

Our final room, the third we were moved to, was relatively quieter due to the construction stopping in the evening. However, our morning was disrupted by early drilling and construction traffic.

I understand that city-centre hotels can have noise, but the hotel should have informed us of these disturbances at the time of booking. If you’re planning to use your room during the day, I’d strongly recommend asking for a room far from any ongoing construction. Sadly these rooms don’t appear to be available.

I feel sorry for the staff who have to endure the complaints. If only they advertised that there was noise between 7-530 due to construction customers could make a choice whether to stay or not.

Beautiful hotel, extremely spacious room with huge windows, comfy bed and aesthetically pleasing furnishings! Staff are warm and welcoming and the location is perfect for getting to anywhere. I had booked a superior double room for 3 nights with my partner for £275 which we had paid at check in. We had issues as soon as we had entered our room.
Tv only had sound but no picture had to get staff to replace, but after replacing with a new tv which was too large for the wall bracket it was hanging slanted and not sturdy or secured.
Heating was automatic and could not turn off, so room was extremely hot and stuffy.
All toiletry pumps were filled with hand-wash even though they were labelled differently for lotions, shampoo shower gel etc.
Windows were sealed so could not open for air, there was a vent on the bedroom window but was so high we could not reach it to close it when we were woken by builders drilling into concrete at a site directly outside our window from 7.30am each day. We wasn't warned about these works happening but would have appreciated it if we was.
Room service did not replenish refreshments nor did they take used towels or replace them, they only remade the bed, they also moved our personal belongings and threw away my earplugs I had purchased myself on the first night out of 3 of our stay resulting in us having to hear the building works going on even louder.
The nespresso machine was faulty and would not clip the pods into place correctly without us having to put our hand inside holding the pods into place putting us at risk of being burnt by boiling hot water dripping from the dispenser.
When these issues were bought up to reception staff they said they would pass on to management, I had not been contacted by management so I am uncertain if any of these issues were raised. I had paid a premium price for a premium double room and service which I beleive lacked of its claimed facilities and room service. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Edinburgh, and I was stunned at the interior of the Leonardo Royal Hotel after reading so many wonderful reviews and being greeted so warmly by the cordial reception staff, I had just felt let down by the facilities.

Dear 143hannahi, Many thanks for staying recently and thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed our hotel’s aesthetic, the spacious room, and the warm welcome from our reception team. Our central location is indeed a highlight for many of our guests, and we’re glad it added convenience to your visit to Edinburgh. However, we sincerely apologise for the numerous issues you experienced during your stay, which fell short of our usual high standards. Your concerns regarding the TV replacement, heating, toiletry dispensers, and the lack of proper communication about external noise are troubling, and we deeply regret the inconvenience these caused.
