There are some hostels that you remember better than you remember the city in which they are located. Were it not for Edinburgh being such a fascinating and magical city, that would be the case for Castle Rock Hostel. Rooms are huge, airy, clean, and comfortable (and well organised), and the lounges - FOUR of them! - are fabulous communal spaces with lots of amenities and unique decorations. There's a massive book selection, computers to use (I wish more hostels still had this), and tons of squishy sofas to lounge around in. The staff are so friendly, and it's just enough out of the way so that you don't have to deal with loud crowds but still conveniently located near tourist hot spots. Very highly recommended, especially for people who like a hostel that's a bit more quiet and relaxed.

I've been there for 2 months. Its above the average hostel in almost any respect. Fire alarms work, its clean and spacious, it's not boring enough to feel death not noisy enough to get a bad sleep, management is very good and the sites and online stuff (including payments) are smooth. In terms of the bedroom mattresses are very good, and rooms are a good size. I'll probably get back to Edinburgh and visit this same place.

I doubt I can add much that hasn't been said already. This is simply a great place to be, and even if I'm coming to stay at a hotel, I'll still start my time in Edinburgh at Castle Rock. They make it obscenely easy to make friends there: quiz nights, pub crawls, city tours, and some of the best common areas I've seen at any hostel anywhere in the world. The location is great, mere meters from Tolbooth Kirk and just up the stairs from West Bow (both iconic shots you'd see in any film/show set in Edinburgh). Staff are also superb, and make you feel like a friend and a person instead of just a client.

One of the most amazing hostels around. Its big and very cosy, especially the common room. Due to CoVid each party gets a separate room and the 2 of us got a 16-bed room with a ceiling so high I saw gods balls hanging down from time to time. The bathroom section is all straightened out and each one got their own toilet and shower. Showers are amazing and big enough. Everything is super clean and the staff are all super friendly and are taking great care of the hostel. They are cleaning it at least once a day (as far as I noticed) with proper sanitizing equipment so everything is almost hospital like clean. I loved my time there and will deffinetly return someday.

*actually stayed in June 2019* Spacious rooms, comfortable beds! lots of showers/toilets never had to wait. Great common areas for socializing. they put on different social events through out the week. Friendly front desk staff. Cold breakfast available in common room I forget how much it was but not more than a few pounds. Great location, see the castle from the hostel! if I'm ever in Edinburgh again I will definitely be staying here. Looking back on these photos really makes me appreciate just how awesome this hostel truly was!
