Attended a dinner dance at the Waldorf Astoria (formally the Caledonian) and was delighted at the quality of food and service provided. The hotel is very old and combines part of the old Caledonian Station which closed in the 1960s. It's worth going into the hotel just to have a walk around. The hotel is immaculate.

The Waldorf Astoria, Edinburgh, is a wonderfully centrally located hotel, literally just off Princes Street, with Edinburgh Castle views - some rooms. Personally we didn't pay for a room with a view and we very pleased we didn't - those rooms are a lot smaller than the room we had (413) which had views of the city - the castle...

I have recently had an excellent breakfast experience in Caledonian hotel, for which I would like to say a few words. The food was brilliant, the buffet was full and it had a huge variety of fresh food. The atmosphere was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. When the members of the staff realised that I can speak a bit of Gree,...

We went to The Caledonian for afternoon tea last Friday. Food quite good and served in the Peacock Alley. Soon after we were served, an adjacent table set for 4 had 2 cake stands placed on it and out came a chef and 2 members of "management" staff. For the next 45/50 minutes they discussed the merits of their version...

I had a very luxurious experience at the Caledonian, breakfast is excellent, the staff really kind and the position is incredibly perfect to reach easily the new town and also the old town of Edinburgh. Only the spa is not up to the rest, i would recommend improvements.

Too many small issues to make this hotel a 5 star beauty. The Caledonian does have a charm but the dirty hall carpets is not one of them. Picky things like the hairdryer cord jumbled in a knot made it difficult to dry hair with a short cord. I left the dryer on the bed thinking the housekeeping would properly...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
