Had a wonderful stay at this very centrally located hotel. Arrived 3hrs prior to check in and our room was ready, valet parking real handy too. Only disappointment for us was the famous caley bar was closed and unfortunately we hadn't been informed. One member of staff said it was being refurbished whilst another told us that periodically the decision...

I have traveled a lot around the world and I would say the staff here were some of the best. Dean took care of us as soon as we walked in the door. As a Diamond member you get some perks, but Dean and the staff took the extra step for us from room upgrade, dinner reservations, etc.. We were...

We stayed for the weekend to visit the Christmas markets and had a wonderful time. I requested rooms with Castle views, which the hotel provided with ease. From check in to check out, the staff could not have been better. They were so friendly and welcoming at all times. The hotel rooms were lovely, very comfortable and beautifully decorated. I...

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights last weekend and it was enjoyable but fell short of perfection. Our room on the first floor was very cold when we arrived and it took a while to warm up. The room itself had no view but I suppose it's the luck of the draw whether you get a room...

We thoroughly enjoyed our time together in Peacock Alley and then Galvin's for dinner. The cocktails were lovely followed by a terrific meal and attentive staff. We enjoyed our food. The half lobster is beautiful. My friends also enjoyed the steak tartare for starter and haggis and then duck confit for main. Lovely evening. Thank you Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh.

The hotel had nice amenities (pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, gym, restaurants, i.e.); however, like other reviewers said the hallways are cold in winter and you can hear every drunk revealer outside the windows. We "upgraded" to a castle view room, which was £50/night more than the room we booked through British Airways. I think they should have paid...

Dear juliajac65, Thank you for your largely positive and honest review. I am sorry that our location meant that you were disturbed by city noise and I will share the feedback. If you do return you may prefer a room to the rear of the property, which is much quieter than the castle facing side, although the view is not...

I've stayed at the Caledonian several times in the past. The rooms are lovely - spacious, comfortable and well appointed. However a I was surprised on a few fronts this visit. They no longer offer Hilton Gold members complementary breakfast (discounted rate instead) which is very disappointing since the price for the breakfast on top of the room becomes not...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
