Lovely old hotel formed from the old railway station consequently with lots of interesting historic features. It is essential to get a room facing the castle if you are to get the most from your stay, there are all classes of room available (although some are very small) on this side. Take breakfast in the atrium area which is much... More

We visited on the 10th September for a fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration with family and friends. The food was fantastic as was the service too. Such a beautiful location in a beautiful city. Thank you for an amazing experience and apologies for the late posting of this feedback.

Great concierge, Central location. Rooms ok although pricey. Breakfast queues to register room numbers unprofessional & school like. Breakfast room disappointing and buffet - tinned or cooked strawberries not ok. Ask for breakfast table in lounge - quieter. Service is friendly but panicked. Spa, pool & gym good plus

We chose The Caledonian for its prime location at the base of the hill leading to the Castle and to take advantage of our Hilton Diamond status. The location made a big difference, but not enough to overcome the service shortfalls we experienced.

The hotel is beautiful and an easy walk to restaurants, shopping and Edinburgh castle. Our room also had a beautiful view of the castle. The staff was very nice and helpful - recommendations of restaurants, assisted with transportation and attractions. Only complaint is the very firm mattress.

This hotel is in a fabulous location making exploring Edinburgh so much more enjoyable. The hotel itself has all the ambiance you would expect of a Waldorf hotel, classic and well maintained in a magnificent building. Reception area perhaps a little small, that said the hotel opened up beautifully once you walked into the main hall. We had a suite... More

I love staying in grand old hotels that have a sense of history. I was particularly looking forward to the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh Caledonian not only for the property itself, but also for the reputation of the brand. However, The Caledonian disappointed in a number of aspects. Firstly, whilst it advertises as being located in Princes Street, which is the... More

Lovely long weekend staying at The Caledonian. Arrived early Friday and popped in to drop off our cases, but were greeted by very friendly reception who were able to immediately allocate a room. Very helpful. Our room was on the 1st floor - facing inwards to the lounge area. Very clean, with a comfortable (firm) bed, and a great walk... More

Beside the great view from my window (room 428) and the breakfast were no other aspects to say " It was a perfect stay": room was so, so small; bathroom was ok, but not for a 5 stars hotel; the tv was impossible to watch from bed, the service in the hotel's bar "Gin house" were average; all refurbish made... Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
