We have just had the most idyllic stay at The Guest Room. Everything was perfect from making the booking to enjoying the hugely comfortable room. Our breakfast each morning was delicious and beautifully presented as well as our hosts helping us plan our few days. We loved the whole experience and can't wait to return.

After a 24 hour flight we arrived at The Guest Room tired and in desperate need of a bit of R&R and we got exactly that. Our Courtyard room was lovely, quiet, super clean and very comfortable (the king size bed is phenomenal), not to mention a short walk from everything you could possibly want to do in Edinburgh. Katrina...

Just returned from a weekend stay at the Guest Room in Edinburgh and cannot recommend it highly enough. From the 2 lovely rooms available, we chose the Courtyard Room. Tastefully decorated and furnished, with a huge comfortable bed, the Courtyard Room has its own private entrance. Steps leading down from ground level, you enter your room from your own Courtyard,...

Occasionally TA reviewers overpraise places, but the previous comments about Katrina and Fergus are spot on. I made contact by email, and there was something nice about the interaction from the start. Anyone familiar with Edinburgh and/or McCall Smith's Scotland Street series will know the kind of lovely buildings in the New Town. About 20 minutes’ walk from Waverley station,...

We had a wonderful stay at The Guest Room for a long weekend, both work and pleasure. We felt we had complete privacy whilst being luxuriated with breakfast in bed each morning. Lovely hosts, wonderful bed and brilliant food. Location also fantastic!

short 3 day stay for 17th birthday. Fabulous hosts; friendly, kind, helpful. The room was very tastefully furnished and both Christina and her Husband were always happy to help with anything.... in our case, working the shower and finding lovely places to eat! Always wishing we were back there and cannot wait to return. I would recommend this B&B to...

Our 3 night stay at The Guest Room Bed and Breakfast couldn't have been better. Katrina, Fergus and the kids are utterly delightful. The room was lovely, private and luxurious. Breakfasts delicious and generous. Loved the location in New Town, out of the fray but a pleasant walk over the bridge to Old Town. Can't wait to return!

Fergus and Katrina were excellent hosts -- friendly and extremely helpful! The garden room was lovely -- with our own private entrance. The room was spacious, clean and lovely! There is no parking, but Fergus took us to a place where we could park for no charge. We didn't need our car while we were there since the location means...

Katrina and Fergus are wonderful hosts and their B&B is perfectly located in a quiet, residential part of the new town - close enough to walk to the sites nearby the castle, but far enough to have a retreat from the extremely busy and crowded tourism in Edinburgh. Our room opened onto a cute terrace with lovely plants. The room...

My husband and I stayed here for a couple nights and The guest room was very nice and in a great location for accessing downtown Edinburgh. Katrina and Fergus were super friendly and provided a nice breakfast in the morning straight to our room! The room was great with a comfortable bed, the only reason why I am giving this...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
