A friend and myself visited for three nights. This is a hotel with its act together with all staff focused, trained and knowledgeable but very welcoming and very approachable. You get the feeling they love working here and love what they do. Decor quite simply stunning and rooms very comfortable with all that you need and desire. Loved the shower!...

Lovely experience with very helpful friendly staff. We were lucky enough to be staying in a suite. The views over Edinburgh were amazing. The room was extremely well furnished with lots of thoughtful extras which just added to the overall impression. The hotel is also extremely well situated within walking distance to many attractions as well as a great choice...

My second extended visit to the G & V. Very convenient location in old town/city center wedged between the Royal Mile & Victoria St. Modern, comfortable rooms with amenities. Excellent toiletries. First stay had an wonderful view of St. Giles & Arthur's seat. Second stay room was smaller interior facing a courtyard but quiet. Epicurean cocktail bar was Lovely with...

After Celebrating our wedding at the G& V in Edinburgh January 2015 we have stayed there twice since on our Wedding Anniversaries. Our wedding experience at this hotel was absolutely amazing with the attention to detail being second to none. Each member of staff was courteous, helpful and exceptionally welcoming, we and all of our guests, the majority of them...

There are many perfectly lovely places to stay in Edinburgh but after staying here a number of times, the G&V has squashed any notion of staying anywhere else. The staff are friendly and attentive without being snooty. They simply want you to enjoy your stay and we did! We stayed on a B&B special rate with dinner the first evening....

The exterior of the G&V betrays little about how good this hotel actually is. The interior is super stylish and tasteful, and beautiful to see. The staff are helpful, polite, and well trained in what is expected of them. The food was varied, of high quality and super tasty. Rooms and suites each have their own theme going; everything from...

My wife and I stayed for two nights in February with friends. Had booked standard rooms but they were not ready on arrival - (we were early). We were offered better rooms at an increased cost which were ready - the standard room is more than adequate I am not sure why anyone would feel the need to upgrade. Staff...

Fantastic Hotel on the Royal Mile really close to the Witchery, the Castle and all the lovely architecture that surrounds that area. Only downside of the hotel I found was breakfast was a bit chaotic, really busy with staff running all over and forgetting to come and see to you once seated, I would advise to get there as early...

We stayed at this hotel for two nights with continental breakfast included. The hotel is awesome, really well designed, I just loved it at first view. The room was big enough, well organized and very clean. There are plenty of comforts in the room such as nespresso coffee machine (free of charge), snacks and drinks. The staff is friendly and...

When I read other reviews of this hotel I thought the colourful contemporary decor might be a bit gaudy and unwelcoming but I couldn't have been more wrong! What a serene and tasteful place this is, from the moment you walk into reception with aromatherapy candles & living flame fire to the lively & eclectic bar, everywhere is very easy...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
