Six of us met for pre lunch cocktails. As it was a sunny day we sat in the courtyard. The Mojitos ordered by some of the group were a bit strong but the waiter was happy to bring more tonic water so that people could add some extra if they needed to.

Champagne Lunch became a culinary nightmare. The main course, a shorthorn brisket and onion pudding was a disgusting, mountain of stogy suet pudding filled with gravy and only 2, yes 2, tiny pieces of brisket - horrendous. I complained, was offered a replacement but given I had eaten half of this disgusting mess looking for the meat, I turned this...

An absolute gem of a hotel. Set in an amazingly historical building in the heart of the old town this hotel has character, personality and soul. Right from entering i was bewildered by the decor, rustic and traditional with a modern contemporary twist. The staff were personal and friendly yet polite and professional. Also attentive and entertaining. We stayed in...

We are getting married at the Hotel Du Vin in December and so we came up to visit. We stayed for a night in a lovely standard double room. We really loved the original stone work in the room. The complimentary toiletries, water, tea and Nespresso coffee was brilliant. Very comfortable bed. Nice towels. Heated bathroom floor which was great...

HDV is in the Old Town of Edinburgh very close to the Royal Mile and indeed most places of interest in the city, of which there are many. We upgraded to the Caleta Zapata suite for an additional £30 a night which was good value for money except the room is very dark and the lights seem to be 10Watt...

Dear Yoponz Thank you very much for your super feedback - delighted that we looked after you so well, although disappointed to read that the room was not light enough for you. I do hope that it is not too long before we see you again. With very best wishes Lisa

We got a good deal for two nights and flights through Expedia. The hotel is easy to find and ten min walk from the royal mile. Staff were friendly and helpful. We revived some chocolates and a lovely note for our anniversary. We didn't visit the restaurant as we had other plans but having eaten at another hotel du vin...

Dear Keryjo Thank you for your feedback on Tripadvisor, really delighted to read that the team were friendly and helpful. We went up for a weekend in Jan and based on their reputation booked in at Hotel Du Vin. Central location and housed in an old asylum. We were upgraded to the Krug suite which is great but.... massive downer... no door on the bathroom. Now this was cool in the 90s perhaps but not cool in the 2010s. We...

Dear Dominic M Thank you for taking the time to feedback on TA and I am sorry to read that you didn't fully enjoy your stay with us here. We would have been happy to move you into another room with a door on the bathroom so that you would have been more comfortable. We are unfortunately limited in our...

Stayed here for 2 nights with my boyfriend for a pre-birthday weekend away. The hotel is in a converted asylum so has bags of character and is a bit of a labyrinth as the rooms don't have numbers only names! The outdoor courtyard area was lovely and would be fab for drinks in summer. Upon arrival the receptionist who showed...

I went there for a weekend, and everything was great. The location is good; almost everything is walking distance. The staff was also really friendly. I will return to this hotel for sure next time I'm in Edinburgh.

Wow, were we lucky! When I decided to spirit my wife on a surprise trip for our 51st anniversary, I picked Edinburgh, and by pure luck, found Hotel du Vin and Bistro. I had no idea when I booked the trip that we were arriving in the midst of Festival Week. The crowds for this event are tremendous, and the...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
