Excellent location, hotel has been refurbished. Staff and Manager (who stated was new) couldn't have been more helpful. Good amenities nearby and visited the St Mary's Cathedral. Trams were right outside.

I've only been in the bar area and it looked and felt really unclean. The prices were reasonable, staff didn't look interested and the atmosphere is kind of eerie. The place was dead, I don't know if it gets busier or not. Judging by the bar, I don't know what the rooms are like but if it's the same pride...

Good evening Reginald, I'm sorry to hear that the bar next door to the hotel wasn't to your liking. I think it may just have been the time in which you visited as I can assure you there is a great atmosphere in there, particularly at the weekends. I must take issue with your comment on the cleanliness, whilst the...

I was organising a concert in the Cathedral nearby and booked one of the rooms (the superior double) for the artist singing in this concert. It was very important to have the hotel near our venue and when the artist and I went to the hotel to check-in (this was only a few hours before the guy had to sing...

The rudest manager I've ever had to deal with. Actually went out of his way to try not to let me stay...Despite having a confirmed booking. No towels in the toilet. Don't stay here unless you are desperate

We came to Edinburgh for a weekend treat with our young person who has disabilities. On arrival the manager was extremely helpful, he provided us with a ramp for the wheelchair for the front door. He was very inviting and friendly too. The room was great with all the extra things we required, not once being a problem, very clean...

We spent five nights in The Guards Hotel and will stay there again when next we're in the enthralling city of Edinburgh. The rooms have plenty of personality, the prices are great, the location is superb (West End, just a few steps from the Haymarket train station and bus and tram stops for many of the major lines), and the...

On arrival at the hotel we found the front door shut and a message on front door with a phone number . After ringing the doorbell and getting no answer I called the phone. A rather dishevelled man answered the door. He said that he was expecting us between 2 and 3 and he seemed put out. I pointed out...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
