My boyfriend and I stayed here for a few nights for our 4 year anniversary. When booking, I had asked if there would be a chance we could get an upgrade for this special occasion. We arrived super early to the hotel 9am, to be told our room would be ready at 10am, despite check-in usually being in the afternoon...

Booked one night stay for early birthday present for my partner. Staff were excellent and we were given a room upgrade. Staff also provided a birthday cake, balloons, banners and champagne in our room for arrival at a very reasonable cost. We even decided last minute to stay an extra night, although we couldn't stay in the same room at...

We have just returned from an enjoyable 3 night stay in the Apex Waterloo and would not hesitate to recommend it. We stayed in a deluxe double room, which was superbly equipped, clean and comfortable. A really well designed room and bathroom. Although we looked out onto the front of the hotel, the room was amazingly quiet and we all...

Lovely, comfortable cosy room, (364 I think) were preceded by friendly staff on reception. Nice big bathroom - with bath and large walk-in shower, massive mirrors and nice toiletries (and the duck of course). Beers in the bar were not over-priced for Edinburgh or for a quality hotel. Equally the cocktails of which I heartily recommend the Auld Alliance. Did...

One night stay in a deluxe room. Room very spacious, modern and clean. Check in was fast and efficient. Pre ordered wine and chocolates to be in our room on arrival but this was overlooked, however a quick call to reception and a trip back down to reception with our original booking form and the error was rectified. We ordered...

My partner and I stayed at the Apex Waterloo at the weekend for his birthday and it was a lovely, relaxing stay. We booked the superior double which was a large room with a huge bed and a lovely big shower and bath tub in the en suite. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful and check in/out...

We stayed here as a couple in January 2015 in a real cold spell. We loved the hotel. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The hotel gives a very good first impression, with lots of staff attending the reception desk. The lobby is very modern, clean and fresh. We were checked in within 2 minutes of arriving on a...

Possibly one of the most conveniently located hotels in Edinburgh - a short walk from Waverley Station and just off the busier roads in the City. Close to the main shopping area, handy for the top tourist attractions and some splendid pubs nearby. Very friendly staff - quite good conference facilities and clean, comfortable rooms with all of the expected...

As always, the Apex Waterloo is a great place to stay. Initial problem with the room heating but adequately sorted out by the excellent staff. We will definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends (as we have done previously).

I always used to use this hotel with my last job and was always extremely happy. It has been 4 years since I stayed here and when I returned I was far from disappointed. The reception staff were warm and welcoming and made sure I had everything I needed. The room was beautiful, spacious bathroom with lovely complimentary Elemis products....

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
