I brought a tour party to the Putechan Hotel for lunch recently on the recommendation of a friend. I phoned earlier to confirm that we would be arriving at 12 noon. We were made welcome and seated and orders taken, but it was almost 50 minutes before any food arrived. The staff were friendly enough but some seemed rather lacking...

I have previously written glowing reports about the hotel. However I recommended the hotel to a coach party coming to visit our gardening Kintyre. They were booked in at 12.00 for lunch, a party of 20. 50 minutes after they had still no food at all and eventually had to leave at 1.30 with two people still to get any...

This hotel has great potential but is need of some serious TLC. The food was very well cooked and enjoyable, & the evening sunset second to none. The facilities are fundamentally good - but the hotel lacks attention to detail - dead plants on view; fag ends in the empty plant pots outside; cobwebs on the balcony where people sit;...

Room very clean -well done to the cleaning staff- and had everything we needed! Food throughout our stay was excellent, Gary the chef is a star and works bloody hard! Having stayed in Putechan off and on for 40 years - through various building renovations and owners/managers - it was nice to return again and meet Jamie and the latest team. Friendly ambience, excellent dinners and of course the location is superb. Look forward to the next visit. I and M

Just back after two days staying at the Putechan with my husband. Staff very friendly and welcoming, lovely room with sea view. Food was good, but perhaps not quite what I expected, with the hotel being directly on the shore of the Atlantis, I did think that the food would be 'fishy' and not a fish in sight ?? Otherwise...

For the second time in two years, I stayed at the Putechan while visiting my daughter, who lives in the area. It was just as good as before with a comfortable room, excellent food, good choice of whiskies in the bar, and friendly helpful staff. When, on arrival, I found that my room in the main hotel did not have...

Stayed here for two nights for a quiet break. I cannot speak highly enough about the welcome, staff, cleanliness, food etc. The presentation of food was lovely and the young chef was keen to hear feedback. We have stayed in lots of hotels and this was one of the best. Beautiful setting and Jamie deserves a special mention.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Putechan Hotel is a former Duke of Argyll’s hunting lodge dating from 1872. It lies on the western edge of Kintyre facing the dramatic Atlantic Ocean with stunning views of the Isles of Islay, Jura and Gigha, together with incredible sunsets. It is surrounded by rugged grounds with an amazing pebble beach, strewn with giant rocks for our customers to enjoy. Take a walk along the beach or perhaps a BBQ while looking out for the dolphins and minke whales. The hotel, now under new ownership, has been extensively refurbished and extended, and can now offer a variety of bedrooms to suit different tastes and pockets; from the bridal suite with roll-top window bath looking out to Jura and Islay and balcony facing the ocean, our 1st floor premier rooms with balconies, ground floor doubles with sea views and a linked disabled room. We can also offer more budget accommodation in our rear facing rooms and ‘bunk rooms’. We also have a fully refurbished and extended Venue catering for a variety of events from weddings (up to 120 seated). Attached to the south wing is the sensational ‘Rock Room’ with one whole wall formed by a massive rock with French doors to the rear and front with stunning views over the ocean. The room seats around twenty and could be used for meetings, smaller intimate weddings, yoga/fitness work-outs, business meetings, or an exhibition hall for local artists. Tell us what event you want to run and we will make sure it is one to remember. The south-facing courtyard is a natural sun-trap and looks over onto the private beach. With practically no light pollution, and clever outdoor lighting systems the Putechan enjoys fantastic stargazing on a cloudless night. ... more   less
