I had to make an essential trip to Londonderry for business last week. We stayed at the Maldron Hotel in the City Centre. We were thrilled at the service, the facilities and the food available under the circumstances. We felt very safe as there was obviously a culture of compliance with all the Covid regulations. We received a warm welcome. Our room was cosy yet spacious and spotless. We actually had a first class meal in the dining room on the evening of arrival and a hearty breakfast the next morning. The staff were great. Professional, knowledgeable yet informal and friendly. Just a lovely interlude during these strange times. Imagine the experience under normal circumstances .

Staff were very friendly and helpful and gave great advice based around the hotel and the new rules due to coronavirus. Easy access to the car park underneath the hotel from the room. The room was very spacious and I’d definitely be back!!

This was a two night groupon deal, and it was our first ever overnight stay in this historic and scarred city. We had a very enjoyable time too despite the damp, cold climate and we’ve booked to return. I started this review at 4 star and as I wrote and thought it over I put it to a well-deserved 5 stars. I just about recall that we had done one or two day trips to this city many years ago and from vague memory it was more for the train ride back then from the south east. The train journey is spectacular in parts. We had tried a few times to take the deal but Wu Flu related lockdowns stopped us in our tracks - but we finally succeeded. The staff at the hotel were all a friendly bunch and the prime city centre location was perfect us. The bedroom was a decent size, with chairs, a table, a tv, kettle and tea/coffee/biscuits. The hotel has an underground car park so we could enter and leave without going out the hotel’s front door. Our deal included breakfast each morning and one evening meal. The brekky food, most of which was brought to us at the table, was quite good too. All our juice, croissants, jams, fresh fruit offerings were brought to us. We queued up to receive the hot, cooked breakfast food. Their porridge was delicious. I’m not a fan of cheap sausages but even hotels that are much more expensive than here offer these plastic-skinned cheap meats at breakfast. The bacon too was the cheaper end of the market and the chemicals were plain to see (when cheap bacon is cooked a white sludge appears which is water & phosphates, with the latter needed for water retention.) The mushrooms at breakfast seemed to be out of a tin so I didn’t ask and I avoided them, opting instead for extra potato bread and grilled tomatoes. The evening meal was good. I’m an awkward customer and I customised my starter, from the selection offered, swopping blue cheese for bacon. I chose haddock for main but wanted it cooked a particular way and all my fussy requests were graciously met. The chips were described as triple cooked but I doubt it, unless you count the first cook in the factory. The cocktails at £7 each were cracking. I got a coffee-based one, which was delicious and my wife opted for strawberry daiquiri. The Wu flu is having quite a detrimental impact on hospitality - the folks who work in this industry are among the worst paid, with unsocial hours and very little employment -related benefits yet the experience here was of ever smiling, friendly staff. This is despite being without much work in the last nine months so fair play to them.
