Travellers' Choice
Nestling in the Suffolk countryside, between Bury St. Edmunds and Sudbury, is The Swan Hotel & Spa in Lavenham, perhaps one of England's most iconic hotels. The Swan dates back to the 15th century when it played a key role in Lavenham's wool trade. Today it is a quintessential English country hotel and restaurant, proud of its achievement of AA 4 Red star, two AA Rosettes & Visit England Large Hotel of the Year 2013. Ancient oak beams and inglenook fireplaces blend beautifully with rich furnishings and fabrics to create the perfect ambiance for rest and relaxation. The historic old bar boasts a wonderful collection of memorabilia, including a wall signed by British and American airmen stationed at Lavenham Airfield during World War II. The Swan is a wonderful place in which to celebrate a variety of special occasions, including romantic weddings, christenings and family get-togethers. It is also a unique venue for seminars, meetings and conferences, where 15th century inspiration combines with 21st century innovation.

We stayed at the Swan Hotel and Spa in mid December, luckily before lockdown was announced. We had booked two nights but stayed an extra night as we were enjoying ourselves there so much. We had the Gainsborough Suite room 60. Such a beautful fresh, warm and cozy room. I think the hotel has had a big refurb during the first lockdown as there was no sign of any threadbare carpets etc as in other reviews. I cannot fault the hotel appearance and its service by the ever attentive staff. Covid guidelines were fantastic. I'd like to give a few shout outs to some of the staff who made our stay extra special Timea at Reception - excellent and professional service, thank you so much. Karen and Niamh in the Spa - thank you both for a fantastic experience. Caroline, Lila and Ruby P from the bar in the evening and at breakfast - thank you all for your excellent service. You seem to work 24 hours a day lol And a shout out to those whose names we did not get. You are all a credit to the Swan Hotel and Spa. I would strongly recommend a stay here and try to get one of the suites as a treat. We will be back for sure.

Room Tip: Ask for a Suite, room 60 but not 38 as its dark in there and bit spooky.

I had high hopes of this stunning building and wasn’t disappointed. The rooms, service and food were all first class. It is difficult to say what could be done better here. Altogether a very special experience for lovers of such old buildings

We have stayed at The Swan twice now and each time it has been superb. The place itself is full of historic charm and the staff compliment the relaxing surroundings with elegant and thoughtful service. I love the uniqueness of the building and the “stepping back in time” effect it brings, along with the rest of Lavenham. My only comment would be the meals we experienced in The Gallery on our first trip, were outstanding, which made the meal on our second stay, a little underwhelming. Perhaps the chef has changed!? Naturally, it was still lovely regardless and the breakfasts definitely made up for it. A beautiful place to stay and we will definitely return.

We recently stayed at The Swan for a last minute treat before Christmas and we cannot praise them enough. It was such a fabulous way to relax for 24hrs before the chaos of Christmas. The staff were exceptional, friendly and professional. The room was cosy and perfect. Food was delicious, we ate in the gallery restaurant and the food was hot, fresh and ingredients locally sourced which made all the difference. Absolutely superb stay

The Swan is a beautiful hotel and like walking into a different world. We stayed for one night and walked in at 3pm for check in and didn’t leave till check out the next day. We booked a higher end room, and it was so lovely with amazing old features, and I slept so well. We used the outdoor jacuzzi in the early evening so it was freezing and dark but what an experience being in a hot jacuzzi at night with all the lovely smells of everyone’s fireplaces. We had dinner as part of our package and it was stunning, the food quality was excellent and absolutely delicious as was the breakfast the next morning. The entire hotel is just amazing, from the comfy chairs by the fire to the lovely staff. Over all an amazing escape from reality and will absolutely be returning to stay again.
