The Fat Badger boasts a quirky and charming atmosphere that captivates many travelers, despite occasional mentions of cramped quarters. While the hotel's secret garden and cozy beds are often praised, some guests express disappointment with room upkeep and consider the pricing steep for the offered quality. Cleanliness generally receives high marks, though noise can be a concern for those in less insulated rooms. Its prime location is a highlight for visitors, as is the friendly service, despite occasional lapses in organization. Rooms receive mixed reviews, with some guests finding them charming and others suggesting improvements are necessary.

We've just returned from an overnight stay at the Lamb & Lion and we loved it there.
It's a building full of character, with a lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and very convenient location.
We ate in the restaurant, fantastic, friendly service ( Weds 4th March - the two ladies serving that night were wonderful!) the food was delicious and although it became busy, it still felt cosy and relaxed.
I have seen other reviewers mention the noise - it's an old building close to the centre of the City, it's unrealistic to expect silence. Saying that, other than creaky stairs leading to the room (Room 3) and the occasional voices in the beer garden, we heard minimal noise and slept soundly all night.
The room was spotless with great facilities. Bright and airy, with a comfortable bed. A small warning that there is a label on the sink stating the water gets very hot and it's there for a reason...it's scalding hot..which isn't a bad thing at all, but be aware if you have children!
Breakfast was lovely, well cooked and service again was friendly and fast.
We checked out at 9am, leaving our bags there while we explored the City for the rest of the day.
The Minster is a 2 minute walk away, the Shambles is 5-10 minutes away so it's a great location for exploring!
When we returned to collect our bags we paid the £10 parking fee for the off site parking which is far cheaper than paying by the hour.
We fell in love with York while we were visiting and this Inn was a big part of that! We can't wait to come back and will definitely be booking in here again.
Thank you to all the staff.

After searching high and low on the internet looking for somewhere to stay, we picked the Lamb and Loin Hotel.

5 star's not enough. Being in business myself and understanding the principles of great customer service, it was fabulous to experience customer service over on beyon the normal.

From the moment we arrived, with no hesitation our large cases were taken off us and taken to our room, top floor no lifts, and this service was extended to every customer.

The staff lead by what can only be described as the diamond of the pack Debbie who ensured their interaction was always just and at the right level, for us perfect. In fact BBC or channel 5 should film this lady and her team, as they are so funny yet so professional and operate just like a well oiled family. Lessons can be learnt from many.

The hotel is old and quirky, bedrooms for a city centre hotel are above good, yes they might not have a modern wardrobe but they make up for this in so many many other ways.

The restaurant at night is run as a top fight military unit, although you might never know. Small compacted menu, but good enough for us to eat there every night.

Breakfast, they say is the start of your day. Well it been a very long time since I've experienced quality above cost, our queen would be happy with a Lamb and Loin breakfast. Might have something to do with the manage Debbie running this service, she certainly help us start our day with a smile.

Overall, from frontline staff to the chamber maids, the Lamb and Loin can be proud of their staff seamless and effortless service.

Our family (including two teenagers) stayed for two nights in January 2020. We booked two ensuite rooms, and both were very well decorated and comfortable. One room was at the front on the first floor, and the other on the third floor overlooked the beer garden and city wall at the rear. This accommodation is in a fantastic location, literally adjoining the city wall and a 2-minute walk from the York Minster. We heard the church bells each night. We had dinner one evening in the dining room, and it was great pub food with a warm open fire. The front bar has a fine selection of local ales. We thought the Lamb & Lion Inn was really good, and we'd be happy to stay here again.

I can't believe that they had the nerve to charge us £200/night for B&B (not including £10/night for parking if you have a car) for this "boutique" experience. I also can't believe we actually paid upfront for 3 nights here this month. If your idea of "boutique" is dark and poky, you will be delighted with the experience.
When we checked in at the reception corridor (it doesn't run to an actual desk), we were told we would be in the receptionist's "favourite" room. If this is true, the other rooms must be avoided completely! We were given the attic room which entailed squirming with suitcases up a steep and narrow stair. The room was a reasonable size but the bathroom (sorry, shower room) was deceptively small. It was built in to the eaves so you could only stand up fully in about half of it. The shower was fine but there was nowhere to hang any towel: no towel rail or even a hook on the door. The cleaner usually left them draped over the bed. When we arrived there was no soap in the shower room. The next day there was no bathmat. The following day there was no shampoo or soap (the remains of opened soap and shampoo and been cleared away and not replaced). Clearly the cleaner was not happy in her job.
Breakfast was very slow on the first day (the staff blamed the overnight people who hadn't told them the numbers for breakfast!). Service was slightly better the following days and the food itself was just about OK.
For about half the price that we paid (which I see is the going rate at the moment), this would be an adequate place because it is very handy for the Minster etc. However we were left feeling mugs for paying up and would warn people not expect any special experience or service at this "hotel".

The bedroom was beautiful with a four poster bed and two large old fashioned windows in the room. It was definitely spacious and beautifully decorated with an old eclectic style.

Unfortunately the bathroom let the room down with an unusable bathtub that clearly hadn’t been cleaned and had hairs and dust all over the bottom and the shower had bits of black mould at the seals as well as black mould covering most of the sealant on the bathtub. Also, there was a towel rail on the other wall adjacent to the toilet and when I stood up from going to the toilet I banged my arm of the towel rail and really hurt myself. I had a large bruise for over a week. This can easily be solved by moving the towel rail away from being so low down and close to the toilet.

It was very warm in the bedroom all night which made for an uncomfortable nights sleep. We had to open the window early in the morning when we couldn’t sleep due to the heat. When we opened the window it was very loud with lorries delivering in the early hours. Unfortunately we were awake then and couldn’t get back to sleep so we were very exhausted for breakfast.

Breakfast was ok. Women serving was blunt with us and took a rude tone when she asked about tea or coffee and I said “can I just have an orange juice please” hinting at I wanted neither but another soft drink option and she replied. “I was getting to that.” In a sharp and unpleasant manner. I was taken aback by what she said and the atmosphere dropped after that. We were also the only people down for breakfast at that time so it was very quiet and uncomfortable. The toast tasted absolutely awful and the tables were very small for all the different types of chinaware. It was a shame as the breakfast room is decorated absolutely beautifully as well.

The theme is definitely consistent, it’s a shame the details in service, cleanliness and quality of sleep let this place down.

Room had an extremely small bed. Room for A king size so dont know why these places use such small beds. Room was extremely hot, and due to the hotel being old the window would only open 6 inches. The fan supplied was a desk fan size with no cover on the front so the spinning blades were exposed.
The remote for the TV was also broken and had to be held together to use.
The room was extremely noisy from the road on the front so if possible ask for a room overlooking the beer garden at the rear of the property.
Breakfast was poor to say the least. No choice, no pastrys, no fruit, no yogurts, no fruit juices, no toast! for £169.00 per night it was very poor.
Asked for flowers in the room for my wife as it was our anniversary, but they were terrible.A bunch and a half of garage forecourt flowers and the hotel were expecting me to pay £30.00 for them.
Just a poor 2 night stay. I wouldn't recommend, but it could be so much better.

Wow! This beautiful hotel stole my heart. Even as a single bloke I fell in love with the Decor and the room. I was actually scared to mess the bed up that was beautifully made with pillows, cushions and towels. I love York but this hotel made this my best trip yet.

The staff were all amazing and helpful to this disabled traveller, with staff on arrival arranging me a first floor room as I had not stated I was disabled at booking, without even asking me if I needed it, then my case was taken straight to my room no problem.

I found the staff to be so friendly naturally no forced interest or smiles. Asked about our day with care, and helped me remember my room number on several occasions as I’m useless lol.

Honestly the mattress and pillows were the best ever!!! I’ve done a lot of worldwide and uk travelling for work and pleasure. And I do believe this is my favourite hotel ever so far.

Great location too literally inside the city wall. And the breakfast eggs absolutely smashing.

Now I must apologise for not getting staff names, but everyone I came into contact with were real stars. So thank you for a wonderful stay from the guy with the crutch who could never remember his room number.

See you all soon I can’t wait to come back.

Booked directly through the website for a discount which also then stated £10 off food and drink voucher for booking. Only reason we booked this accommodation. We called to confirm when en route if there were any t&c's to be told no. £10 would be taken off our bill on checkout.

On checking out we were charged £27 for a sandwich, small (poor) cheeseboard and 2 drinks. We were told this was with the discount (most expensive block of cheddar I've ever had) when questioned the staff text the manager while we stood at the bar waiting. 20 mins later the response came there would be no voucher offer.
Generally really poor customer service. Mediocre food and wine. Mediocre room. Lot of street noise.Stay elsewhere, plenty of beautiful places in York far superior.

A lovely bar & B&B in a brilliantly busy part of York. Central to everything!
A warm welcome, fantastic lunch & lovely gin greeted us before being led to a lovely cosy, warm & fresh room.
Being in a room on the front of the property meant an early hours call from the noisy nightclubbers at 03.40am! We stayed on a Monday so can’t imagine what a Friday/Saturday night would be like!!!!! We didn’t have breakfast but the breakfast room is really quaint! Lots of small comfy rooms with snuggly sheepskin rugs on comfy chairs, open fires & friendly service!

Thank you for staying with us at the Lamb and Lion Inn and for taking the time to leave us a great review I'm pleased to hear overall you enjoyed your time with us and found our staff to be friendly and welcoming. The only downside to having such a central location can be the noise at times although unusual to hear noise so late on a Monday evening we appreciate this can be frustrating after a long day! We do have rooms at the back of our building which i would recommend if you look to stay with us again in the future. If you ring our central reservations direct they will more than happily discuss our room options with you I hope we will be welcoming you back again in the future Thank you Laura

What a nice little hotel, the location was outstanding, near to the sites, shops and restaurants. A good selection of breakfast items (including vegetarian) to choose from. Rooms were warm and comfortable. Park at the Marygate parking lot, the hotel will sell you a discounted parking voucher. A little noisy at night since it is on a Main Street, but nothing too bad.
