We had not been able to visit London since Dec 2019 due to family health issues as well as Covid and had heard many horror stories about lack of staff in the hospitality business all around the country so we were anticipating problems due to this. Not here! The only slight change on our return visit in October 2021 was a slightly later start to breakfast due to lack of staff and this had been changed back to the normal times when we returned a month later but nothing else had changed at all and this is still a hotel that gives first class service. From initial contact to departure , we are always amazed that they retain their dedication, service and quality at such reasonable prices, whatever the outside world throws at them. They all work as a team seamlessly- regardless if you are a guest staying at the hotel or just enjoying the bar/coffee or restaurant faculties. As per normal, house keeping in all areas is immaculate, we love the fresh smell as we walk into the hotel and they really do keep everywhere so clean and polished not just in the room but all the public areas. Lovely rooms, I sleep like a log and I am a very light sleeper so it is nice not to be disturbed by outside noise or other guests, perfect.
Excellent selection at breakfast, always freshly cooked by Tarek in the show kitchen , love the freshly squeezed orange juice everyday as well, and this never fails to set us up for our days sight seeing. Also thanks to Kanti as our breakfast and stay wouldn't be the same without him looking after us.
Giorgio is amazing and really cares about his guests having a perfect stay and he will go over and above to help if it is ever needed in any way, even before you have arrived. Thanks to this amazing team, we have been able to escape to London in October and November to recover from two bereavements in the immediate family and we have just returned from another 4 night stay for my husbands birthday before an op next month. We had such a lovely surprise when we returned back to the room on his birthday as it had been decorated so beautifully and with great care and attention to detail, he was really overwhelmed which is not like my husband but also the stunning birthday cake and prosecco.
We have had an exceptionally bad 18 months but the quick visits we have managed to have recently have helped us both to recharge to face the next hurdle and that really is priceless.
I really, really wish we had come across the Lion & Key years ago - we have stayed at various 5 star hotels over the years but I can honestly say that the hotel and staff still maintain consistently perfect service every time - its because they really all do care and work together as a team.
The other reviews on Trip Advisor just reiterate our experience, they stay at the top of their game all the time and I really hope that the owners are aware of what a fantastic team they have got, once you have stayed here, you wont want to go anywhere else.

The staff here are amazing!! Giorgio couldn't do enough to help us with our room selection. As a person with disabilities and my access adjustment requirements, staying in hotels can be a challenge. Giorgio went out of his way to make sure that my needs were met and his manner was reassuring, accommodating and compassionate.

The room was lovely, the hotel was, immaculately clean and the cafe bar serves the best homemade beef burgers I've ever eaten! Access to Town was easy and quick on the Tube.

It was great to see the manager serving in the restaurant and to be able to chat with him. I love the hands on, lead by example approach!

We loved our stay!! Thank you to all staff!

Myself and my husband booked this hotel through groupon and were so happy with everything on our one night stay over.
We wanted somewhere just outside the city and this was perfect. Just a 10 min walk to Leyton underground and then about 20 mins on the tube into the city.
Very friendly and helpful staff, informative and happy to help with everything.
We then went into our room which was beautiful, spotlessly clean and again everything provided inclusive mini fridge.
We enjoyed a drink in the restaurant with again very friendly staff.
And finally breakfast, it was amazing. My husband had the full English and I had scrambled egg on sourdough bread which both were first class.
We would highly recommend and would definitely return. Well done and thankyou for our wonderful experience with yourselves. Jo and Mark Aston.

The bedroom was fine even though they confused the sleeping arrangement and failed to mention I would be in a smaller room after I had paid for it. That was rectified so that’s fine. What I have a problem with is that they had a long menu for breakfast on the tv with such a big variety and when it came to ordering it, they said that’s the old menu and we should look at the other new menu which in the politest way I can say, was absolute sh*t. I had paid extra for breakfast, I had thought compared to other hotels I have been to, that even if there was a menu , I could ask for extra things such as extra toast or an extra sausage for free. Or I could order more than one thing than an English breakfast and one drink, but no. I have to pay extra for such things after paying additional fee for breakfast. The food wasn’t really that good as well, the sausage was so sickening to look at as well. The best thing was the toast, to be honest. It’s really just a scam of a hotel based in the worst location. I suggest going to another hotel worth the value. It was so bad that I checked out a day early to stay in my sisters’ apartment (which wasn’t serviced) that they had rented for the same duration but had better breakfast than this hotel. It was embarrassing on my behalf as I had brought my friend on this trip paying for a hotel that wasn’t really all that good in general and could see the look of disappointment on her face. Tasted as if it was made in the microwave. I was clearly mistaken. Stay clear of this hotel, thanks

Response from Giorgio Brocco, General Manager at The Lion & Key Hotel
Responded 20 Mar 2022
Dear Divine, Thank you for taking the time to leave a feedback about your recent stay with us. I am saddened to read you had such a bad experience with us. To be honest I am shocked to read your comments about our breakfast: yes, it is true we recently updated our breakfast menu and the menus loaded on the rooms Smart TVs are still the old ones (I am sorry for this), but the updated menu is placed in every room on top of the desk, very visible for the guests to see. Our breakfast menu includes the following: Full English, Vegetarian Breakfast, Turkish Breakfast, Eggs Royal, Eggs Benedict, Turkish Menemen, Smashed Avocado on Toast, French Toast, Vegetarian Egg Benedict, Granola and different types of omelette; I am not sure what you would expect more for breakfast... When booking we do specify that our breakfast it is "A la Carte" and not a buffet style breakfast. In a buffet style breakfast you can eat as many cheap sausages as you would like; our ingredients are top quality and we cannot afford to offer free extra sausages, I am afraid. I would advise you to have "all you can eat" options in future, if you prefer quantity to quality. I strongly do not believe your review is fair and that it truly reflects our standards. I want to believe that you just had a very bad day when writing the review. Luckily, our real standards are reflected on other reviews and by our Certificate of Excellence award that we have won for the 5th consecutive year!

First of all let me say how spotlessly clean and good smelling this hotel was! Easy service from the front desk to check in even accommodated us 45 mins early. Breakfast was included with a voucher to use during our stay. It was limited to one breakfast each from a set menu with a tea or a coffee. The quality of food was great! The eggs benedict was perfectly poached eggs. Congrats to the chef. Very quiet hotel during our stay no noise issues considering it is surrounded by a main road both sides. On checkout the manager at the desk even let us use the printer to print a document we needed for our travels. We would seriously stay again when we are back in London. Thanks everyone at lion and key hotel.

Booked this through groupon. Amazing for the price but it is out the way of central London. We used the kapten app which worked out cheaper than using Uber.

The room was lovely with everything we needed. The bed was comfy but the pillows were massive, I prefer mine a little thinner!
The shower is one of the best I’ve ever used.

Staff were very friendly and professional.

Breakfast wasn’t great, you get a set menu if you book through groupon.
I asked for an omelette and it came with fries, for breakfast?!?! It was a little greasy so the next day I stuck to toast. You also only get one cup of tea or coffee with the set menu. Having stayed at numerous hotels and b&bs where you help yourself to cereals, tea etc, the breakfast here was a let down.

Our evening meal on the first night however, was great!

We stayed for a couple of nights this week so that we can visit our family who live nearby. Spacious room, comfortable bed, spotlessly clean and lovely staff. Within easy reach of Stratford Olympic Park, Westfield shopping and Walthamstow, this hotel is a little gem and we would thoroughly recommend it. Forget the faceless chains and try the Lion and Key!

2 night weekend stay. I chose this hotel for the good aircon and food options in the restaurant and they lived up to the good reviews!

Rooms are clean and fairly spacious. There’s a proper dressing table which is a rarity in city hotels (includes hairdryer). The TV allows you to mirror your phone so can use streaming services you have. The bathroom is very clean and includes shampoo & conditioner which they replace if used when cleaning your room. No hand wash though so we bought some from the Tesco 2mins down the road. Food in the restaurant is amazing and you don’t need to prebook. The aircon is the best we’ve had in a hotel.

For some reason the toilet in our room was really high up. I’m only 5”2 and my feet were dangling so I had to use my bag as a footstool. Really odd but it was the only negative.

The Lion and Key is a wonderful hidden gem of a hotel. Situated in Leyton it is a 26mins tube ride but well worth the journey. The hotel itself is modern, clean and beautifully presented. The reception is very welcoming as are the staff. We arrived an hour before booking in time but our room was ready for us within 10mins.
The room was a double with an en-suite oh the highest standard of cleanliness. Complimentary shower gel and shampoo, shower cap and soap. Towels were soft and large bath sheets. The shower was a waterfall one which was great. There was tea and coffee and biscuits. Our room was cleaned without asking and the towels changed. Bed was very comfortable and extra pillows are in the wardrobe.
Our stay was enhanced by The Lion and Key pub next door. A modern establishment with the most amazing food. The brioche French toast with cinnamon has to be the best I’ve ever tasted. The lamb skewers were delicious as was the garlic bread made with dough made on the premises.
Staff in both places were friendly and helpful.
Leyton is a culturally diverse town with some colourful buildings. I’m so glad I found this place and will definitely be returning in the near future cannot speak any more highly of it.

On entering the hotel I can’t really say the greeting was friendly, just didn’t really welcome us, just needed to do the essentials and he sent us off to the room.
The room was an adequate size, it was clean but you don’t expect to see paint falling off the walls. I had a discount through wowcher and glad we didn’t pay the full price! The room was cleaned the next day but they failed to top up the tea/coffee tray which surely is a basic requirement, and they didn’t leave any extra complimentary shower gels.
The mattress was rock hard and for that reason would not return to this hotel.
