Travellers' Choice
See life in a whole new light and challenge your perspective at Montcalm East, an Autograph Collection Hotel which occupies a prime position between Shoreditch and the City, a short stroll from Old Street. Part hotel, part East London creative hub, Montcalm East invites you to sleep, eat, drink, play, explore, unwind (and repeat). Our iconic architecture is the first clue that we like to innovate. Montcalm East’s diamond-shaped building on City Road pays tribute to the op art of Tate Modern luminary, Bridget Riley. As light hits it, the shimmering shark-grey façade tricks the eyes – which is apt, given that Moorfields Eye Hospital is our neighbour. Optical illusions and visual surprises abound inside, too. Montcalm East draws inspiration from the art studios that blossomed in Shoreditch in the 1980s and 90s. Led by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and photographers such as Turner Prize-winning Gillian Wearing, a new breed of creatives revitalised this dynamic patch of London. Now it’s your turn. Experience our Creative Mark throughout: from our PhotoLab (where you can develop and print your pictures) to the Moor + Mead bar and restaurant, every detail is designed to delight. Additional highs come courtesy of 288 light-bathed bedrooms with camera-worthy views (many have floor-to-ceiling windows) and curated art and photography. Because living well has never mattered more, there’s also a reading room and a spa with a swimming pool, fitness centre and more. Even our airy, double-height lobby sets the tone in calm. Montcalm East zooms in on the innovative spirit of its setting – bohemian Shoreditch and tech-Titan Silicon Roundabout – and captures it with clarity, character and colour. Consider this your East London hub, ready to connect you to storied streets, immersive experiences and an eclectic community. Rediscover your creative side along the way.

I simply loved it. Many other hotels say they are 4*-5* but this one really is, from the service, to cleanliness, everything was spotless, very good quality finishings, good size rooms and attention to detail overall, it is worth it. The pool area, with the Versace medusa design is also cleaned continuously (the lady was mopping the excess water every few mins so guests dont slip), the showers very clean, sauna and steam room functional, big and looking brand new, pool with fountain with not a lot of chlorine to hurt your eyes and skin and jacuzzi simply wonderful. Sadly the venue doesn't have their own parking (which is common in London) but on weekends you can park for free in the street.

Situated in buzzy Old street, this hotel was a moment of (mont)calm within the midst of the city. The spa alone makes this hotel incredible value. The location is spot on - walking distance to Islington or Shoreditch and close to so many restaurants we were spoiled for choice. The room was a decent size and very comfortable. The spa however really made this experience feel luxurious. To be able to swim and relax in a sauna before heading out into the world was more enjoyable than I imagined (how will I stay at a non-spa hotel again?) The staff were helpful and warm. Couldn’t have asked for more really!

Located a 15 minute walk away from The Barbican Theatre, we were very well looked after from the moment we arrived for our 25th wedding anniversary getaway. David on reception was excellent!! His friendly and efficient manner set the tone, he couldn’t do enough for us! The top floor room was spotlessly clean with amazing views. The decor in the room and around the hotel is modern and tasteful. The continental breakfast was excellent although an additional toaster would make it perfect. The bar staff were welcoming and professional. We wish we’d booked another night to take advantage of the pool and spa facilities and will definitely be back!!

I've been staying at the The Montcalm East for several years. It has recently undergone a major renovation, primarily in its ground floor and public spaces - the rooms seem largely unchanged. The clean rooms are nicely designed with ample space; the bathrooms are relatively large and well equipped (though once the shower supplies had not been refilled, but it was during COVID when I expect staffing the hotel has been a challenge). The location is excellent: steps to the Old Street Underground station, as well as many buses; walking distance to The City, Barbican, Tate Modern, Victoria Park, Spitalfields, and many restaurants. The reception staff are efficient and friendly.

I’ve been a Marriott member for years as I travel considerably both for work and leisure and have found Marriott hotels have consistently good quality and service. I always feel welcome by staff, find a comfortable inviting room, and hotels that are conveniently located. Montcalm East is all the above and even more. It’s a hotel buzzing with excitement and full of interesting visitors. The Mior & Mead restaurant is really excepcional. During my recent stay we had at least one meal a day at Moor&Mead.
