Tucked up Park Place just off Piccadilly the St James offers good accommodation, a small bar and a reasonable restaurant. We stayed in a suite downstairs on the ground floor which had good natural light and as is the norm in older London hotels it had an interesting quirkiness about the room layout…..my only complaint would be the shower over the bath which required some gymnastics to get into and would be impossible for those less agile. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is fabulous with bright cheerful staff enthusiastic to see that your day kicks off well. The location of the hotel means it is easy to get to any of the Mayfair restaurants and the doorman is only too happy to organise a taxi. There is a small parking bay making drop offs and pick-up easy.

The St. James's Hotel and Club is a hidden gem in the heart of London's Mayfair. From the beginning of my stay - with a warm welcome at the hotel entrance to the farewell, I felt very comfortable. The team has a wonderful hospitality mentality. The rooms are equipped with great taste and an eye for detail. The food is truly an experience due to its diverse flavor nuances. The housekeeping team is very attentive and was always available to fulfill my wishes. In particular, the many artworks/pictures in the hotel create a fantastic atmosphere. I'm already looking forward to my next stay at the hotel. Thank you to the entire team of the Althoff St. James's Hotel & Club for the wonderful time.

We stayed for one week with our 25 year old son. He had his own room. The location of the hotel is excellent and very peaceful on a quiet street but close to the tube station and many desirable walking areas. The hotel is quaint and very welcoming and warm. Some of the rooms are small for two people and luggage but there are other more spacious rooms to choose from. Breakfast was included and it was very good! A selection of hot dishes such as omelettes as well as a buffet with fruit, yogurt etc. The service throughout the hotel is excellent! The staff at the front desk were extremely helpful at all times. They booked restaurants and helped us to buy tickets for a show and helped with directions etc. Huge shoutout to Graham (head concierge) who was a wealth of information and also Stephanie who worked at the front desk. I would definitely consider staying at this hotel again on my next visit to London.

I had booked a stay to celebrate a special occasion but, unfortunately, couldn't attend due to illness. While I was aware that I had booked a non-refundable rate, I hadn’t realized it was also non-transferable. Even so, I reached out to the hotel hoping they might allow me to reschedule for another date—particularly since I wasn’t asking for a refund.

I made several polite requests, even offering to choose a low-occupancy date to minimize any inconvenience to them. However, their responses were rigid and focused on reiterating the non-refundable, non-transferable policy. While they offered a preferred rate for a future booking, it didn’t resolve the immediate issue and felt more like an upsell attempt rather than a genuine gesture of goodwill.

What I found most disappointing was the lack of empathy in their responses. You would expect a hotel of this standard to handle situations like this with more flexibility and understanding. Exceptional circumstances, like illness, deserve a more thoughtful approach, and it was disheartening to feel like just another number on their booking sheet. Policies are important, but so is recognizing when exceptions are warranted to provide great service.

Like several other reviews have mentioned, it’s impossible to get a good nights sleep here. Going on 48 hours with nearly no sleep. The air conditioning is malfunctioning, producing an intermittent loud vibrating noise every 1-3 minutes by the bed. Maintenance has come by twice to fix it. Their solution at 1 am was to completely turn off the air conditioning, letting the room get too hot to sleep. When asking for a discount they were not able to accommodate as we booked via another website, and the most they could offer was a free breakfast. Absolutely do not allow concierge to put you near room 511. You will not sleep.

On top of that, the rooms are tired. The wall paper is bubbling and the floor is stained. The bathroom gets completely soaking wet anytime somebody takes a shower. Perhaps this was once a beautiful hotel, but no longer. The hotel addressing similar comments to this with the notion that they are fixing these things isn’t true, as they have been promising improvements for nearly a year on these notes and clearly it has not been resolved.

The restaurant looks nicely decorated. If you’re coming here, stay for a drink but choose another hotel for your stay in London

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We sincerely apologize for the disappointing experience you had during your recent stay. Your comments are deeply concerning, and we truly regret the discomfort you experienced with the air conditioning system, as well as the overall condition of your room. This is certainly not the standard we aim to provide, and we understand how frustrating this must have been, especially when trying to rest. Regarding the air conditioning issue, we apologize for the inconvenience and the insufficient resolution provided by our maintenance team. This is something we are actively addressing, and your feedback will help us ensure future guests do not encounter the same problem. We're sorry that we couldn't offer a discount due to the third-party booking, but we understand your frustration and will review our options to better accommodate such requests in the future. We appreciate your kind words about the restaurant’s decor, and we hope you were able to enjoy your time there, despite the issues you encountered in the room. Should you give us another opportunity to welcome you back, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team directly so that we can ensure your next stay is truly comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you again for your feedback. Ciaran

This was our first stay at the St. James Hotel and Club and our first real experience of Mayfair having stayed for many years in Knightsbridge.

We had a warm welcome from the young doorman who was resplendant in his uniform of traditional overcoat and hat as he helped us out of our taxi and carried our bags into the lobby.

We were then met by Graham the concierge who welcomed us in and after we checked in he showed us to our room and later he again made sure we had settled in while we had a drink in the bar.

Everyone was welcoming and friendly and we had a table reserved for us for a bar meal in the evening. The quality of the food, drink and service was very good and after a pleasant hour or so we went to our room.

The facilities in the Superior room were modern, clean and luxurious. The only thing we had to ask for which came very quickly was non dairy milk and decaf tea and coffee. There are snacks and drinks in the room which you can buy but it woukd have been nice to have complimentary biscuits on the tea tray.

Breakfast the next day was of high quality and unlike other places we have stayed in the Full English meant you could also have anything from the continental self service as well. Nadir was our waiter and his exuberance for service and attention to detail was infectious.

We asked his name and those of others as we not only like to get to know the staff but also mention them in reviews. Its a shame though that they don't wear name badges as it would be easier to identify them. Also there was no feedback forms in the rooms which is unusual.

Although everyone was friendly and attentive it would have been nice if all of the staff not just Graham welcomed us and called us by our names which we have had at other boutique five star hotels.

We stayed for two nights and on the last day after we checked out we went for a Sunday morning wander and came back for our bags before getting a taxi back to the train Station.

This hotel is ideally situated for St. James Park, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, Bond Street and Leicester Square.

Reception was perfect and they thanked us for staying and hoped to see us again, which I'm sure they will, but again no name badges to thank them personally, especially the young lady who went outside in the cold to get us a taxi.

A hidden gem in London…it’s tucked back in a cul-de-sac away from the noise of the city yet very close to some of the best shopping in London. This boutique hotel which has an air of exclusivity, is incredibly elegant with beautifully appointed rooms and bathrooms. But a very friendly staff greets you each time you return making it feel welcoming like coming home at the end of a busy day. I plan to stay only here whenever I’m in London. The best aspect was head concierge extraordinaire Graham Luff who made our stay very special. He’s helpful and funny and chock full of information on the best places to go, the history and great stories! He helped arrange all kinds of difficult things but most importantly, he knows where to find the best chocolate!

The Althoff St. James Hotel is in a FABILOUS location within easy, walking distance to a majority of the local sites, as well as easy access to remarkable shopping and art galleries. Our concierge, Graham Luff, was incredibly attentive and helpful as he obtained play tickets to Operation Mincemeat for us, the same evening that we arrived, as well as pre-show dinner reservations at a wonderful restaurant, J Sheekey. He assisted us in obtaining tickets to the Tower of London the next morning. Additionally, he knew a guide who was able to take us oin a walking tour of the immediate area. This was all done within a 24 hour period as we had not planned anything prior to our visit. This type of very thoughtful attention and guidance allowed us to make the most of our very short visit to London. Additionally, Graham walked me around a little bit of the neighborhood, showing me some of the special sites and telling me some additional stories of the area. We will come back and stay here for certain when we return to London.

An unassuming hotel tucked away on a quiet street was my initial appeal to this location. However, I was blown away by the amazing attention paid to the guest experience, down to the smallest details. Rooms were attended to and restocked with fresh toiletries daily without request. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and went above and beyond my expectations to ensure my family had a wonderful stay. The concierge went so far as to track down the sellers of the fragrance that filled the halls for me to purchase because I loved it so much. The hotel is in close proximity to so many tourist gems and the staff was very kind in helping to navigate our stay. I rave about this hotel to anyone who asks - it truly elevated an already beautiful experience in London.

I have been staying at the hotel for some 12 -15 years or so and always booked though Small Luxury Hotels of the World . You will see by my previous reviews I have always given it 5 stars , however my last stay just over a year ago was 4 stars as things were slipping.
On arrival this time I noticed all the staff were new, all the regulars, including the wonderful front of House manager ,Jonathan and the lovely concierge had left.
I always had said it was like home from home but this time I was just another guest, I’d didnt expect to be recognised , as before, but would have hoped my name on the system would show my past custom.
I booked an executive suite for my 70 th birthday, always used to get an upgrade, as an SLH member but nothing this time. A bottle of champagne was waiting in the room, a nice touch, but in the past there always a card saying welcome back with a few chocs or a little cake.
The room was fine but the bathroom needs updating and some repairs are needed , the mirror frame was frayed and tatty , the shower needed some regrouting and it did smell of drains first thing . No chocs at downturn.
I asked to take breakfast in the bar which was agreed but no one bothered to serve me and I had to keep getting up to chase service.
The attention to detail has gone and its that detail that I loved and made me return time and again. Over £800 per night for the room and top end prices for a glass of wine , is no longer good value IMO.
It was just like home from home and also club like, but I’m sorry the personal touch has gone and so many good staff have left ,I think Ill be looking for another hotel that could match the good old days I enjoyed at St James Hotel.

Dear Dougiepc, Thank you for your recent stay with us here at the Althoff St. James's Hotel & Club, and for taking the time to review our hotel and share your feedback which is extremely valuable. It is unfortunate to hear that after having a long history of staying with us, your recent stay did not meet your expectations and that you felt the hotel had lost some of its charm and personal touch. We aim to provide our guests with the very best of experiences and can see we have fallen short on this occasion. Please accept my sincere apologies after having returned to us to celebrate your special 70th birthday. We are in the process of growing our team and continuously upgrading hotel and room facilities to ensure that all of our guests can enjoy the warm hospitality. The team and responsible staff members have been addressed and we are in process of upgrading our bathroom facilities, including bringing back chocolate during turndown service. Nevertheless, please be assured that the experience you made should never have happened and that this does not meet our standards at all. I still hope, that you will give us a chance to show, that we can do better and hope to welcome you again one day. Until then, my team and I wish you all the best and remain, with kind regards, Yubin Park Front of House Manager
