What a great place ! Fantastic location, we were so lucky with the weather, when we arrived we were made very welcome and that continued for all of our stay, brilliant walks right at your doorstep, rooms very well laid out and comfortable, good bathroom...More
Long walk, through a beautiful valley. Like a set from an epic medievalesque film.
The house looks like Heathcliffe might live there. But Suzy and Martin are gentle welcoming people. The house has been rebuilt with sheeps wool insulation, then the old roof put back...More

Thanks Cherry B. It's also been compared to the Weasleys' house from Harry Potter!
This was my first experience of staying in a hostel (I've managed to avoid them for 48 years!) and I have to say it was a good one. Suzy was very welcoming and there was only one other lady in my room. The facilities are...More

Ah that's lovely, reviews like these make our day!
In years to come places like Skiddaw House will be replicated in museums. I felt like I'd been transported back to my youth c 1980 and almost expected to be allocated a chore in the morning. Thanks to all involved for keeping it going and...More

Thanks for such a thorough review Paul, I'm sure this will be useful for other guests. We're glad that you enjoyed the traditional hostelling experience here; perhaps we'll think up a chore for you next time!
If you're looking for some peace and quiet then YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse is the perfect location for you. Standing in a traffic free valley, between Skiddaw and Blencathra, this former shooting lodge and shepherd's bothy, complete with coal and log fires, is the highest YHA bunkhouse in Britain. It offers simple but comfortable accommodation in the beautiful northern fells of the Lake District, surrounded by moors, valleys and breath-taking views. This unique 22 bed bunkhouse offers a truly rural retreat for walkers cyclists and those wanting to escape the pressures of modern living and get away from the crowds in the towns of the central Lake District.

Hello. Great to hear you are thinking of making a visit to Skiddaw House. If you have never walked the route to the hostel before, I wouldn't recommend doing it in the dark the first time, unless you are confident at night navigation. The walk should only take 1 hour 20 minutes from the fell side car park near the Blencathra centre in Threlkeld, so you may be able to make it in the light if you visit in summer.
